The actual problem is that there still aren't remotely enough glamour plates and hopefully DT adds a whole shitton of them.

They would have said there would be more plates by now for hype reasons if there were gonna be more

I've always attributed portraits breaking when you change glams to the fact that some pieces work very different in portraits.

For example, here's my catgirl in a cyberpunk samurai kind of pose:

And here's the exact same pose, only in an outfit with a skirt:

  • When I change gearsets it belches out this enormous litany of system text telling me every single item it glammed over and scrolls everything else out of the chat window. I don't think anyone in the history of FFXIV has given a poo poo about any of that text and yet it's coupled to system messgaes so the only way to get rid of it is to shunt all of the system messages to some forgotten window.
  • Portrait fuckery. Don't think I need to say more but I feel like most of the people in the game just rock the default portrait cause they don't want to figure out the right series of moves to make it work.

Honestly, these two are related. I've never tied a glam plate to a gear set, and I've never had any issues keeping my portrait ready to go. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Great Twist
I've been bis on my paladin for months now. I made a glam around that time, tied it to a plate, tied it to a gear set, and made a portrait. Nothing's changed since.

The portrait still breaks on occasion.

Sometimes if you have a weapon in the plate, and use that plate on multiple jobs, it works. It just doesn't affect the weapon and you have to resave the portrait. Sometimes it just tells you the gear is invalid and doesn't let you save the portrait, so you have to remove the weapon from the plate.

It's a good, functional system.

I had the impression that portraits broke any time you gear stopped matching what's in the portrait, so basically equipping a new piece of gear and then not glamming it will break it. Jewelry tends to be a particular problem since I assume most people don't bother filling out those slots on glam plates.

I've mostly solved this by sticking the invisible jewelry on my plates.

It’s this. I have all my gear sets linked to plates and never have issues with broken portraits.

Link your portraits to gearsets + glam plates, and make sure the glam plates have something set in *every* slot, including accessories that aren't otherwise visible. Then you will no longer have problems with portraits.

the big problem with portraits isnt that theres zero fix for the issues, it's that the issues are stupid and the solution isn't obvious so people are naturally going to get frustrated and not bother. and the end result is every party popup is 2-4 players hitting you with The Adventurer's Stare and it makes the whole system seem ugly and amateur

Given the large number of people I run into that don't have an adventurer plate set either, I think the bulk of it is people who didn't know it exists / didn't bother in the first place, with a smaller (but still unfortunate) number of people who tried and gave up.

The Power Ranger outfit drives me nuts with this.
Because the body piece also covers all of the arm/leg slots, you can't do something like use the Emperor's New Gloves/Pants as a filler on the glamour plate, so when I swap from GNB to WAR, anything that isn't the head or chestpiece is still 'technically' glammed with my GNB clothes even though I'm in the power ranger outfit now. And that upsets the portrait gods.

The gear remains “glammed” with the non visible GNB clothes. Just save the gearset after switching from GNB to WAR and then the portrait. This is how my SAM and MNK plates work, since I use the sentai suit on MNK.

This works fine for your striking jobs since there's only two of them but if you went from GNB to PLD to WAR wouldn't that break it again? so steve would have to remember to switch to GNB before WAR every time, unless he only uses those two tanks.

I've been doing it via macro (i.e. using /gs 1 1 in a macro to change to gearset 1 and apply plate 1), but I still get issues. Looks like it's time to buy The Emperor's New X accessories, and to Link Plates. Thanks!

Oof, even worse.

Clearly this would never have happened if they cross promoted with some sensible European brand of vaguely poisonous chemical byproduct. Sure, "Mountain Zu" is a solid pun and its loss would be felt, but we could've had the "Ironfrog Brewer" or something.
