It tasted like Pepsi, basically.

EDIT:

At the time Pepsi had a big ad campaign with the "Pepsi Challenge". They'd take people and do a blind taste-test of Pepsi and Coke, to say which they would prefer. Pepsi would overwhelmingly win, because when you stripped away all brand identity and just looked at the drinks themselves, it generally did have a taste more people preferred. (Pepsi only started this campaign because market research by both them and Coke has already proven this result.) Coke only did well in non-blind taste tests because of brand loyalty and generations of marketing. So Coke said "gently caress it" and decided that they would make a new formula. Their idea was that they would then have a taste that people preferred and also have the brand identity, allowing them to completely crush Pepsi. They didn't realize that by announcing this "new Coke", they ended up causing a massive backlash because it was seen as a betrayal of all of that branding.

Flat old Coke or Pepsi. Like previous poster said, Pepsi was winning these taste tests but that's after one or two sips because Pepsi is sweeter. Coke always won longer testing. Coke also also took the opportunity to go from beet sugar to high fructose corn syrup.

It was one of the biggest debacles in modern commerce.

In retrospect it was marketing genius for a long-term holder like Coca Cola because the backlash against New Coke "forced" them to release Coca Cola Classic which was NOT the original formula, but closer to it than New Coke was (while still using much cheaper HFCS) and people loved them for it.

This happened before I was born, is that when coke stopped using real sugar in favor of corn syrup?

Depends on what side you're on, I guess - if you use it to receive money, there is always the risk that PayPal will just declare you suspect and keep everything. (It has admittedly been a while since I last heard about that happening, but that may equally well be because people now prefer other collection platforms.)

If you use it as a payment processor I don't know - but you're probably right.

Page ago, but artists often have issues with paypal, regardless of the content of the work, especially if you're doing digital art.

I have no idea why, but I've known people that do entirely sfw art that get slammed hard. They're also eternally lovely to trans people- getting a name change is stupid hard, even with all the documentation. It's common courtesy to disregard paypal names.

New coke was the switch to corn syrup

Then the switch to classic coke (both were available for a while) kept the switch

They dropped the "classic" name many years later without changing the formula noticably

I like when it took a photo of myself holding my ID (despite them already having my ID), a lot of e-mails explaining there was no physical object being shipped, and two weeks of back and forth so paypal could clear a payment I got after freezing both mine and the sender's account.

It's not like either of our accounts was new.

Wow, I had no idea. And I'm even from Atlanta, I've been to the world of coke many times and they say NOTHING lol, they basically memory-holed New Coke and I'm always disappointed that they don't have it in the huge array of soda machines at the end that let you sample every product coke has on the market everywhere in the world. It's fuckin rad but some of that poo poo tastes vile lmao

That's true but now you've got a lot of content creators eyeing for other platforms. Can they find one? Who knows, but many were once happy and relatively content have incentive to find alternatives.

Connection error
Coca Cola had already switched to high fructose corn syrup before New Coke. The idea that they used New Coke flopping to hide the change is a common urban legend.

Yeah there's that too. But going back to the part about them being stupid, I'm sure they're all celebrating instead of considering the long term implications. Does OF have any legal control of the specific content the creators put on their site? I'm wondering is if the creators can just yank their existing poo poo from OF and post it elsewhere.

I remember when this happened. On our local news there was a story about a man who was installing a FIFTY THOUSAND GALLON TANK in his basement to fill with "real Coke" "so my kids don't have to grow up never knowing the taste of Coca-Cola."

I hope, someday, to have something, anything in this God-forsaken world I care about as much as that man cared about the malted battery acid taste of Coca-Cola.

I'm trying to decide which option is wilder: If he thought that he could just put already-mixed coke in that tank (which would end up becoming flat and undrinkable in about two week's time), or if he was filling the tank with the raw syrup so that it could be hooked to a soda fountain system (in which case, a fifty-thousand gallon tank would mean you've got enough syrup for a quarter-million gallons of coke.)

Pepsi also capitalized and put out this ad after New Coke had come out and nearly everyone hated it:

https://youtu.be/8vklRAGS0p4

It was everywhere and a brilliant piece of marketing. That ad alone probably made them reinstate Coke Classic.

Much like the outcry over OnlyFans made the leadership realize their error…

Yeah I was also wondering that. If it's the former then how did he even expect to fill that tank. I'm thinking the fifty thousand gallon part must be misremembered because you wouldn't even be able to fit that in a house. A moderately sized above ground swimming pool holds about 7500 gallons.

I worked at Cisco Systems as an engineer in the late 90's. We had super secret access to one of AT&T's major data hubs as part of their contract for buying tons of stuff from us so we could monitor it, improve products, etc. This hub was one of a couple that served the west coast of the USA. Tons of data pouring through it. Millions of users.

It was 95% porn. Data and bandwidth. Back then it was all 28k/56k stuff, so just loading up a single porn pic took 5-10 minutes. Actual video clip porn did not even exist.

We couldn't see user info, but we could see what and where info was being accessed from. Just porn all the way down. Back then things like email and phone calls barely registered on a scan. Literally had to change the search perimeters to even see that stuff register.

I wonder from time to time nowadays what that percentage is. Things like youtube and streaming have probably lowered the percentage a lot, but, like where is it now? 70% of the internet, 50%?

Right, but those buyers aren't gonna stay on the site, they'll find some way of downloading content (which you generally can't do), and then follow the creator to another site now that you've basically told them it can happen)

I already mentioned this. It works for OF in the short term and they're probably happy about it because they're short sighted dipshits who aren't considering how that's going to come back on them in the long run.
