I don't think I've read a Dolash post in years. He's not on my ignore list or anything, it's just that when I see that avatar and a huge wall of text my eyes just slide past. That's not a knock against his posting of whatever he has to say, I'm just too lazy to read all that.

Magres posted:I've like never listened to any Homestuck music other than what's in the flashes. Thread has had music chat, but I don't think music chat with links has ever happened. People should link their favorites! Youtube autoplayed to Flare after the piano duet arrangement of Sburban Jungle, and I'm really digging it for how it's kind of dark feeling and atmospheric. If you liked Flare as is, you should check out the fan-made-lyrics version, it's extremely good. Also wow, how did you not listen to any music outside of what's in the comic itself? There's some really incredible pieces out there, both in the peripheral albums and the songs of the main albums that didn't get used. Well, as long as you're asking for links to personal favorites..... For the peripheral albums, I highly recommend the entirety of STRIFE! by Tensei, and Mobius Trip & Hadron Kaliedo by Bowman. There's not a dud in the bunch with those albums. There's also some really great stuff on the original fan-made album, Land of Fans and Music, if you can wade through the numerous Doctor covers. Some particularly noteworthy tracks are The Drawing of the Four (played entirely with the beta kids' musical instruments, fudged slightly because there's both flute and bass guitar there from Jade), MegaDanceVania (only if you're a gigantic DDR nerd like me) and Heir-Seer-Knight-Witch (an amazing and very definitive medley of the beta kids' planet themes, i.e. Doctor, Endless Climb, Atomik Ebonpyre, and Frost). For unused songs from the core albums, Lotus Bloom from volume 8 is a really fantastic slow, kinda Legend-of-Zelda fantasy-ish song that I really enjoy a lot. There's also Sburban Reversal (unlisted on bandcamp because it's one of volume 7's bonus tracks) that takes the End of Act 1 track and busts it the hell open in the best possible way. I could seriously go on forever about this, but that's probably enough for one post. CidGregor fucked around with this message at 08:51 on Aug 9, 2015 |

It reminds me of the Ace Attorney orchestral albums, particularly the suites that hit a point of climax in each game's Cornered theme.

Land of Fans and Music 1 contained a track that was literally just an OCR reject hydrocity zone remix. CidGregor posted:If you liked Flare as is, you should check out the fan-made-lyrics version, it's extremely good. I usually loathe fan lyrics (mainly because they so often make the mistake of just thieving the existing melody line instead of doing anything different), but this is definitely listenable at worst. Getting a very Donna Burke vibe off it. Also while I love MT&HK, it's not something I'd push on anybody since Bowman's shameless shower singing voice is like marmite for ears. Strife is unreservedly excellent though and I'm sad Tensei doesn't seem to have put out much else. Renaissance Robot fucked around with this message at 10:39 on Aug 9, 2015 |

Also for shame, how did "I like Flare" not immediately get met with "Try Medium"? It's by the same guy and is also great, though much less dark. Song of Skaia is another superb atmospheric piece, really .mp3

CidGregor posted:Sburban Reversal (unlisted on bandcamp because it's one of volume 7's bonus tracks) that takes the End of Act 1 track and busts it the hell open in the best possible way. What's funny about Sburban Reversal is that the track title first showed up here, just before the end of act 2. It was literally just Sburban Countdown, slowed at the end, then rewound at double speed (the first 1:05 of the album version), which Hussie then used just the forward portion of (so it wasn't even reversed at all in the comic). People then spent the next 2 years asking where the rest of the song was, so Mark Hadley wrote it for the album (at least I assume it was him, he's listed on the credits page). Almost like it seeded its own existence or something.

Bowman's voice is a bit of an acquired taste, it's true, but I don't even care, Dawn of Man and Lies with the Sea have been two of the most-played-songs on my itunes library for years, they're both fantastic songs.

I'm out of it for a little while and the thread descends into anarchy. drat, this pre-pause pause is something else. I'm a little curious why Homestuck attracted so much musical talent. It's not something Hussie really had direct control of (unless he composed some music at some point?), unlike the art team which is mainly supplemental, music is entirely external. The music team basically became its own thing, with its own themes, styles and stars. You can almost describe Homestuck music as some kind of micro-genre. I guess it's a testament to Hussie's ability that he can organize and leverage his musical collaborators, but it'd be interesting to know how he even recruited them in the first place and what drew them into it. Has he commissioned music for money?

Has he commissioned music for money? Considering he (claimed to have) spent fifty thousand dollars licensing the U.N. logo for use in Problem Sleuth, I'm pretty sure he paid his music team. From what I understand most of them where Problem Sleuth readers (Mark Hadley I think even wrote some music for PS, and "Showtime" was originally intended for PS) who jumped on board to write music for HS.
