Speleothing posted:I just don't loving understand why these idiots insist on Hodling a meme stock. Has TSLA ever given dividends? The other half of "buy low" is "sell high". Dividends aren't so much the issue, the issue is that the profit Tesla is making compared to the overall value of the company is pretty tiny. The price to earnings ratio is a fairly fundamental metric for valuing companies (or at least determining if they are over or undervalued). Would you rather spend $100 on something that generates $10 of profit for you, or $100 on something that gives you $1 of profit? Ford is worth $50 billion, it sold 4.4 million cars in 2023 and has price/earnings ratio of 7.5 or so. Tesla is 'worth' $500 billion or so, it sold 1.8 million cars in 2023 and has a PE of 36 or something. Car companies tend to have a PE below 10, VW was closer to 4. For Tesla to have a PE ratio comparable to other car companies the share price would have to fall to around $30/share (making the company worth about $95 billion, one fifth of it's 'value' today). Alternatively their profit would need to increase by about 5x to around $70 billion. This is the main reason Tesla stans always talk about how it isn't a car company, it's a tech company. Tech companies get away with a much higher PE ratio because they are thought of as developing stuff that doesn't make much money now but will print money at some point in the future. This ties into Musk threatening to take his ideas and develop them in some other company if Tesla doesn't give him his $50 billion bonus, Tesla is much harder to sell as a tech company if they aren't seen to be actively trying to develop new technology. If it didn't have Musk involved and didn't have a sky high valuation it would actually be pretty impressive that Tesla had gone from nothing to selling nearly 2 million cars a year in the space of 20 years.

The tech company poo poo is baffling because their tech requires buying the car. There's no other way around it, they're not sourcing out FSD tech as far as I know

Maybe their supercharger network is part of it if they can clip the ticket via some sort of licencing fee every time another brand's EV is charged using their network. But other than that you don't really see much potentially valuable technology coming out of them.

Yes, a sane analysis based on equivalent companies puts the price at like $12-35/share. But I was talking about insane investor behavior, not the fundamental problems with the stock itself. The dividends are the issue for crazy TSLA to the moon types if they are Hodling through the booms. If you don't sell the stock when it's up and the company never pays you a dividend, then what do you get from having it??? I guess maybe some people who hold a lot can get loans leveraged against their portfolio, if the bank is willing to do it.

Why do you think there's such an overlap between cryptobros and Musk Suckers? edit: These zealots would probably turn up their noses at those old folks who spend their whole day pulling the slot machine lever at a casino. By attributing value to TSLA or BTC, they're doing the same thing, they are just desperate to give it an air of dignity. Zero VGS fucked around with this message at 22:37 on Apr 18, 2024 |

They aren’t getting in to sell at $420.69 a share, they’ve deluded themselves into thinking it can get to thousands per share. Dividends don’t really enter into the equation.

That framing is incredible - Absolutely no contrition or admittance either, no “we got it wrong and will do better” - just the court undone what we done and that’s bad. It’s obviously the court is wrong for enforcing the law, because if they thought the judge ruled wrong they would be appealing instead of trying to move to another state.
