I feel like a tournament where a bunch of the participants are in on technicalities and we have to debate whether or not somebody is in based on where they did their worst poo poo wouldn't be a great takedown anyway. This can be a criticism of the overall culture of wrestling. We'll get back to blagging on WWE with the NIT.

As someone who enjoyed reading about the incidents and such in the NY64, I think the Worst Person award is way less interesting than focusing further on specific incidents and such. IMO scrap the worst person and make another bracket of awful angles, scandals, abuse, etc.

here's the drat truth about why this tournament is opening up to non-WWE. it's because for all of the hooting going on about how awful everyone is, there were not even 64 nominees from WWE. only 63. it's a loving joke

I guess it's kind of a damning indictment of the industry as a whole when Dick Murdoch, actual KKK member, is barely a blip on the radar. Granted, I think he only spent barely a year in the WWF/E, but still.

So this seems like a good time and place to vent. So I was listening to a huge recap of the Montreal Screwjob by Meltzer and I heard about how Davey Boy Smith dedicated his European title defense against Shawn Michaels to his (Davey's) sister who was dying of cancer. Davey lost that match. I thought this was scummy enough but I just now saw that he didn't just say in some one off promo that this was for her, she escorted him to the ring. So he could lose and Shawn could get a meaningless win. The only meaning in him winning that match and belt was pure spite against the Harts and his ego ballooning beyond even Hulk Hogan levels. I grew up loving Shawn and Trips. They were great, entertaining and, yes, very sexy men who spoke to something in little me. But nowadays, no matter how great a performer he was back then, 90s Shawn Michaels has to be one of the worst people to ever be in the business. It makes me feel so bad. He isn't on par with the literal murderers but goddam he has to be up there somewhere.

I think the Shawn Michaels of today would absolutely agree with you. He was a petty, egocentric piece of poo poo who got away with almost everything thanks to both being legitimately one of the best wrestlers of all time AND being in place when Vince McMahon/WWF was at its most vulnerable. Even today there's still a bit of a whiff of narcissism/self-aggrandizement about him and how "humble" he is but I doubt anybody would argue that he isn't a better person now than he was in the 90s.

I have no idea if Shawn is a good person now, but he does seem to at least acknowledge that he was a terrible person back then. Its possible he's just a different kind of bad now or the same kind and just high on his poo poo. But just acknowledging that the bad poo poo you did was bad is the first step to not being bad.

I think Shawn, Bret and even Austin's attitude towards protecting your spot comes in part from coming up when Hogan was on top, and looking out for yourself at all costs was kind of what you had to do. Bret had the whole WM9 thing going down, and you know that sent a message to everyone else.

There's steps after that and its entirely possible HBK hasn't done them and is only doing Step 1 because he knows he's supposed to and it allows him his current form of self satisfaction. Oh yeah, I forgot about Jimmy Del Ray, who got fired for raping a woman in a hotel, shaving her head, and leaving her a bloody smear along a hotel wall. Even worse, he got initially Tatanka framed for it and unfairly suspended. Vince at least had some decency to fire him and never take him back. WCW hired him the next year. Plus, one poster here summed him up perfectly: "He even looks like he should be on the sex offender registry. Like, all of them."

He only cares about what he can get away with, hence why he will hire some rapists and child molestors back but not others.
