i own every Bionicle posted:Edit: forgot to mention my relief hearing about TMA and Pavlov’s successful journey. Hope he settles into his new home comfortably. He spent most of yesterday in bed, but by the end he was trying to use his travel food bowl as a chew toy, so I think he's recovering well   We just took a ~2 mile walk around the neighborhood, and he was checking out the smells -- and leaving his own, of course! I think it's a sign of progress that he's marking instead of just dumping all of his pee in one spot.

I decided Pavlov has had enough time in the new house that he probably doesn't need to take his Trazodone (anti-anxiety meds) any more, and whooooo boy, he is bouncing off the walls! In addition to helping him chill out, they also noticeably sap his energy level, so I guess it's not surprising that there'd be a rebound. I gotta get him some more toys, stat. We had a really nice walk this morning, despite the 22F/-5C temperature. Met a few neighbors, and a couple of very excitable dogs.

Little Bear needs a TPLO (knee surgery) for his right leg now. Almost two years after having the same procedure on his left. Poor guy  He did really well with the first surgery and recovery. But it's a lot.

Not to scare anyone but this was the symptom that brought us to bring in our cat, that led to his diagnosis of heart failure (and unfortunately with cats, like most, chose to euthanize). It's important to confirm, it's a terrible thing to face but it's a terrible way to pass naturally from. Apparently this can also be a result of asthma, a long-standing blockage or even diabetes though, so don't panic yet.

Do you know what that component is used for? For the record, Airbus planes don't have the conditioned cargo space needed to transport large dogs. We flew on a Boeing 737 Max-9, IIRC.

I took Campion to the vet today and they confirmed that his heart and lungs are both strong, so it seems like the constant panting is just anxiety, although I'm still not sure exactly what could be causing it other than hormones.

Well, New Home has a rabbit issue. And that means we have a rabbit poop issue. And that means that Pavlov has a new smorgasbord of gustatory delights to explore  I'm looking to get fences put in that should hopefully keep the rabbits out (I'll add in subterranean wire mesh if necessary), but man, what the gently caress dog?

I used to have a lot of rabbits coming through the yard but Newton’s chasing them out when he sees them and peeing around the border seems to have delapinated the place after a week or so. So hopefully Pavlov will do the same and have fewer yard raisins.

A pair of idiots last year were trying to dig a nest not 25ft from the garage rear door that Pongo goes in and out of. They were finally dissuaded. Now, there is one hanging out not much further out past the garden that gets chased off a lot of nights when I let Pongo out for last call.

Brisket got most of the rabbits to move out, occasionally one strays into the yard but he's big on chasing them and they don't stay. His uncle Kirby was more diligent about his work with bunnies and would find their burrows and once and we  had to clean up dead, headless, baby bunnies in the house

I heard that rabbits prefer yards with big dogs because they keep cats away. Stella was scared of or possibly transfixed by rabbits, we'd always have them in our yard and if there was one out there at night for her last pee I would have to escort her to a separate part of the yard or she wouldn't go out.

So we never heard back from that rescue agency after my wife sent a followup just explaining what happened and attached some pics of her bite wounds. The dogs are still up on their socials which sucks to see but I think they're in a good foster situation at least and we gave the new fosters a heads up about what happened. Given that the rescue didn't tell the new fosters that one of the dogs bit my wife I'm definitely not comfortable fostering for them again anyway. My wife has been really affected by the whole thing, she thinks the rescue thinks it was all our fault and we're terrible dog people and yadda yadda so she's just been really down. We got in touch with our vet to ask if they're involved with any rescues and they seemed so happy to hear from us and to hear that we want to foster so that was a big pick-me-up. I'm a bit nervous about bringing another big dog into the house after what happened but we've had so many come through and never had a problem like that before so I guess I'll just have to get back on the horse. Ollie needed an ear infection seen to, but was too stressed out at the vet to be treated. So they gave him a sedative. Currently zonked out and farting. Ears were successfully treated, though.

Today Umbra found out that the stripey cats are spicy. Her first instinct after getting sprayed by a skunk was to run inside and rub her face against every surface she could find in the house. Had to rush her to a pet supply place that has a dog wash for a skunk bath. Now I have the house ventilating heavily while I hose down the entire house in an enzyme cleaner. It's a good thing she's pretty.

Ok my puppy broke me today: she simply will not pee outside. We have turf, I've sprayed it with some "attractor" stuff. I have a leash. I watch her like a hawk inside and the second she's sniffing around, I take her out to the pee spot. She just sits there like a dumbass for upwards of ten minutes in the same spot and when I give up and assume she has nothing, we go inside and she pees at the earliest opportunity. What do I do?

It can be scary sometimes for dogs to go in a new place, they'd rather go in the house where they're used to going and are comfortable.

It sounds like she is taking the trip outside as a chance to explore (or the fear thing mentioned earlier). Once she is back in familiar territory and she isn't as focused on the new surroundings, she relieves herself. How old is the puppy? Do you take her to the same spot every time? At other times do you play with her in that spot? Does she forget to pee every time you get her outside, including in the mornings? If your puppy has been in her crate while you sleep, she will have to pee when you first let her out in the morning. If you go out and wait around for 10 minutes and she doesn't pee, she should go back into her crate. Try again in ~30 minutes. Only after she has relieved herself outside can she come out of the crate for food and fun times. I found the idea that you can tell your dog is going to pee very dubious. Once, my puppy was watching birds while sitting at a window, and without breaking eye contact with said birds, lifted her haunches a few inches and relieved herself. Now I read "watching your dog" as "doing something with your dog" because if I don't have her focus she can lose it.

One of the keys for Pochi was to stand in her bathroom spot until she went. She didn't get any fun sniffing until she went. We didn't go back inside until she went. It took her awhile but she's very independent.

I just assumed she would decide where she wanted to make her "spot" outside, but it's just too exciting out here! We plopped a wire fence around a portion of the turf and potty train in there. Finally, I put her in once more and this time, her normal "sniff around and maybe decide to pee or just sit and stare at you" routine turned into frantically sniffing and looking around for anywhere but inside the pen to poop. She finally gave in and did the deed. I threw her a loving party and gave her like 5 treats and told her what an amazing dog she is. Now she's grokked it and we're getting pretty consistent potty breaks with an occasional accident in the house instead of the inverse. Pee within the first minute of being at her spot, Poops take a bit longer but not what feels like forever/never. Pickwick (18 mo old golden retriever) has alot of lighter hair sticking out from under his coat on his thighs and shoulders: It doesn't pull out easily like it usually would on our other double-coated dogs and it looks almost more like frayed guard hairs than undercoat? I won't say I brush him super frequently, but again brushing or a bath/brush at the groomers' doesn't really seem to remove these. Is this a normal thing with goldens or should I be supplementing him with something for his coat? He just gets Purina ProPlan chicken and rice adult food, which I'm not sure is like, the best dog food ever-if there's a different dry food I should try I'm open to that too.

Yup, that's exactly what they'll do. My parents have had multiple dogs get skunked multiple times, their current dog immediately ran inside (this is skunkening #2 for her), under a bed and rubbed her face on the rug until we pulled her out; threw the rug out immediately, the dog stayed but was definitely bathed repeatedly and her head smelled like skunk until the following spring. Thankfully my brother and I were over there this time because my parents probably couldn't have pulled her out from under the bed themselves.

So did the whole respiratory scare at the end of last year just kind of fizzle out or become endemic? I think I remember reading something about how it turned out to just be a combination of a few things? But I’ve not seen anything about it in the last few months.

My vet (the lead vet, tons of exp, really good) basically said it was a few other common respiratory things they deal with but all at once. I would love to hear something more scientific, but Pochi has been going to training classes with us pretty much since it started, and day training once a week, and we haven't heard of any dogs there getting it, so...not sure.

I will post a bigger update soon but it’s been three months plus 1 week that I’ve had Newton. He has started coming into work with me (I usually work from home but occasionally go into a makerspace) and just plops down on his bed, zero drama.  He had a great time at the dog park on the way home  Sadly, it’s not all roses. He has turned to a life of crime.
