As a tangent, its interesting to note that as far as I'm aware, Japanese society does not have the same "high art/low art" divide that the west does. Its entirely possible for a creator to make a work as a thought-provoking cultural analysis and a blatant cash grab at the same time, and see no contradiction in this. Superflat (an art movement actually partially inspired by evangelion) is an excellent example. Its roots are in taking the endemic super-cute aesthetic of anime and escalating it to the point of grotesqueness, sometimes by juxtaposing it with deliberately uncomfortable and ludicrous sexual imagery, but the very same artists who do this work don't see any particular fault in turning around and doing paid design work for the very same people they're openly mocking, sometimes in the exact same style.

Hell, that (in my mind) isn't the worst of it. During the scene with him in the hand of Unit-01 in the original series, he seems honestly apologetic that Shinji has to be the one to kill him; in the manga, he wants Shinji to kill him to serve as a final 'screw you' to SEELE, and has very little/no empathy towards the obvious trauma it'd be causing Shinji.

EDIT: loving hate the English audio dubs of Eva. The voice actors are just annoying, regardless of what it is. I hate coming off as a purist because I used to hate subs, but hearing the Japanese audio and English subtitles is just a nicer experience. Even if you get an .MKV file with english/japenese audio AND english subtitles, you can see what the english voice actors are saying is slightly different than the subtitles. I just feel like I'm getting the 'full' experience this way. It's also funny to hear people speaking this crazy moon language with a single English word thrown in now and then. Also I know what the word "Baka" means now.

Of course with subtitles only, you can't leave it on as background noise when you're doing chores or something because if you aren't there to constantly read rhe screen you'll be lost.

I don't know if you've read the manga or not, but the impact of Touji's death really is a thousand times more powerful. The scene just works. You can't properly judge the scene out of context anyway, it needs to be read naturally reading the manga. Maybe he's not Anime Shinji, but he's definitely a Shinji.


Honestly the manga delivers a lot of the emotional blows a lot more impact and has more room for detail and storytelling. I don't really think it goes off the rails completely until that final ending. It's just another telling of Evangelion, one skewed less Anno-dominant but still from an important creative part of Evangelion and still pretty fun in a Rebuild-esque retelling sort of read.
