Given a surface level description, this is a typical late night skinemax movie. What you have here is the story of a cute mousy girl going out into the world for the first time and experiencing pleasures that she had been sheltered from her whole life with the help of her more worldly rebellious older sister who is also her rival. This is like the most lazy outline for a 70s french erotic art film that you could make. The catch here is that the pleasures being experienced here are the pleasures of cannibalism. What I presented isn't that far from what the movie is about. Justine is entering into a prestigious veterinary school that both her parents went to and that her sister is also attending ahead of her. She is also a strict vegetarian and has never eaten meat. When she arrives she and the rest of the Freshman class start going through a thorough hazing ritual, which at one point includes her eating raw livers. She refuses the liver at first but is forced to ingest it by her sister and after becoming very ill, a hunger awakens in her that she has trouble satiating and well things escalate from there. Going into this movie I was expecting a violent and possibly really gross horror movie (which I got) but I wasn't really ready for just how sexually charged the whole thing was from beginning to end. The film is just dripping with sexuality and features pretty much wall to wall young adults in various states of undress. It's just here when things get hot and heavy, they also tend to get really bloody. Make no mistake: this is an incredibly violent movie. While the initial reports of people fainting at TiFF are probably a bit overblown, this movie does not shy away from showing the gruesome details and some of that stuff is really hard to watch. How sexually charged the whole thing is just makes it all the more unsettling. Scenes that are hard enough to watch on their won are made even more vivid as their shot with pure sexual pleasure coursing through them. The scenes aren't just graphically violent, they take great pleasure in what's going on. It's a movie that doesn't pretend to not be enjoying the violence and is probably enjoying the violence a little to much. On a technical level the movie is superb and it's really hard to believe that this is the filmmaker's first film. It's thoroughly gorgeous to look at, expertly paced and generally just takes what should frankly be impossible to pull off and pulls it off like this is a movie that someone would make. Really the most shocking thing about this movie is how well it works despite blending things that really don't seem like they should go together. I believe the movie is getting some sort of release today and you should do what you can to see it because it is loving insane and there's nothing else like it. Definitely. Just going by the Wikipedia definition which says the genre is "A crossover between sexual decadence, bestial violence and troubling psychosis", that describes this film like exactly and just generally it's so god damned French

Saw this last year at Celluloid Screams. It's a pretty wild ride, but all the reports of it being incredibly disturbing and gross as a massive exaggeration. I mostly found it to be a very dark humorous film.

Raw is the poo poo. I'm glad my expectations for its grossness were diminished because it really isn't a super disturbing grossout fest, at least not for horror regulars. What it is is an intelligent, thematically dense, wonderfully shot movie. The lead actor is perfectly cast and she does a terrific job conveying an innocent girl entering the world. It's expertly directed. There's almost a sensual palpability to it, if that makes sense. You can almost smell this film (rotten meat and vomit is what I made out). It's also surprisingly funny in places, though the humor is pitch black and almost hard to discern amid the carnage. But it's there. (Don't tell me the finger eating scene wasn't played for laughs). Everyone try to catch this in the theater if you can. It's pretty great.

The cannibalism in the movie isn't that gross, it's the other body horror poo poo going on, but really I'd say there's three big gross out gag scenes Her initial hives break out and all that scratching in bed. Coughing up the hairball. The bikini waxing.

The hairball scene was incredible. It just kept coming and coming and coming.

This definitely wasn't as violent or graphic as I had expected, though my tolerance for that stuff is presumably higher than your average moviegoer's (probably true of most people here). I think what unsettles about the film is how frankly sexy it is; I didn't expect to see a film that made cannibalism seem like a turn-on but it makes sense when you consider how hormonally-overcharged teens thrown into tight spaces together would be indulging some really ravenous sexual appetites. The most disgusting scenes all involved stuff that seems to explicitly invoke puberty: hair in places you don't want hair, that really brutal-looking rash (I was just waiting and dreading for her to scratch it until she bled, and jesus the sound design there was top-notch). Hilarious ending. Also, not to be too much of a skeev, but that mirror dance scene was loving hot.
