The eyeball seemed much more menacing when it first appeared. I thought it was some of Phos' cast off remnants and we'd get some kind of climax in the final few chapters. But the following chapter defused that tension straight away. At this point it's hard to see what could happen that would amount to anything other than "and they lived happily ever after".

This maybe ending reminds me of a certain game, where the ending is to just watch a star go supernova and swallow everything. it's not played as explicitly being sad, so I think the interpretation is different for everyone.
