I’ve been on these forums for over a decade, and sometimes I’m curious what made some of you pick the username you did? Inside joke? Play on words? Arbitrarily picking something off the top of your head? Mine’s pretty mundane, honestly. I just liked the Stone Temple Pilots song ‘Lady Picture Show’ and had heard it earlier in the day that I registered. Are everyone else’s stories equally mundane?

I'm a chess nerd. It's the home square of the black queen on the chessboard. It used to be d8 but too many textspeak buttlords called me 'date' and I was like ffffuuuuck no it's two syllables goddammit lower case d numeral 8. Also I used it as a nom de plume before the internet even existed.

I was 15 years old and playing Counterstrike (when it was a brand new HalfLife mod) or Tribes or something and my friends and I decided to make our previous names more German sounding, because every other week we had different clan gimmick. The previous one I was using was "Foghat" after the band from the 1970s, and so hat->helmet->helmut, and there you go, its been 19 years.
