I just feel like recent adaptations aren't the best quality as studios have really gotten married to stuff like intermixing 2D and tvCGI and it's not the best looking thing visually. I wouldn't look forward to having the living armors just be copy pasted models or a giant obvious computer generated Dragon.

I like One Piece, been reading it since it came over to the States with the rest of the Shonen Jump roster. But after 900 chapters I really just want it to end and for Oda to stop expanding everything into the unknown we still don't have proper context for.

To compare it to Dungeon Meshi: the two biggest plot threads that need more information is the fall of the golden kingdom and the mad sorceror, and the plot of the elves. For the former, we had the paintings chapter to give us some history, along with the current realization that the spirit that spurned this entire dungeon quest to begin with was really the former mayor of the spirits trapped within the dungeon. For the latter, between the Gnomes and the Governor's statements, as well as the elf specialist squad that shows up. We understand that the elves are both seeking to monopolize the spells that keep souls anchored to their bodies, as well as seeking to eliminate the threat of a dungeon evolving into a monster mutating factory like what happened at Kabru's home town. Things are escalating thanks to the prophecy Laius & Co. have learned, and the elves finally showing up. With each new piece of info we are approaching what feels like a final confrontation although it's still a ways off.

If I just pick two of the major plot threads from One Piece: The Void Century, and the mystery of Raftel are probably the biggest in my mind. We know there was a massive war during the void century, we know it led to the formation of the World Government. We also know that the losing civilization seeded the world with indestructible stone monuments, as well as lesser ruins recounting the history of things and knowledge of these markers is strictly forbidden on penalty of death. But outside of the doomsday weapons and message from Joy Boy, the only character who can answer anything about all this doesn't talk about the things she's read. And Raftel is a complete dark spot because there is nothing that can really be used to guess what the island contains. It could be a technological marvel not unlike the continent of Mu, or the island of Atlantis. It could be a necropolis of a fallen kingdom filled with the horrors of a long past war. And most recently we got a cryogenically frozen straw hat, a singular leader to the WG when previously it had been the council of the Gorosei, and the biggest blue balls in the history of the series when we jumped to the far less compelling Wano arc just when things were about to pop off at the Reverie. It feels like Oda sometimes avoids revealing any concrete information because to do so would probably put the story in a place where it couldn't just be the adventure he wants it to be.

I guess my point is, One Piece is a locomotive train with no real destination despite the conductor insisting he knows the last stop. And over the years I've gotten tired of seeing similar scenery while looking out of the windows when the first time around they were far more colorful. I don't think any manga series that has had this many chapters has stayed as "good" as it used to be and it feels like Oda will have to write for another decade to finish this story out when we have so many more things to cover like the possible and impending global war that could break out. Or the literal hundreds of plot threads connected to his massive cast and just making Sure that Luffy doesn't get swallowed up by any of the bigger fish that can easily put a stop to his journey.

I'm a bigger fan of shorter, more focused series. Stuff like FMA and Alice in Borderland really hit that sweet spot of length and scope of story. And one of the few long running series I keep up with enthusiastically is Hunter x Hunter, which gets carried by Togashi's strength as a writer as his arcs don't really "repeat" themselves and he also can create amazing supporting characters and scenarios for each of his arcs. The current of which just knocking it out of the park. Granted HxH could meander around forever too much like One Piece, actually moreso because unlike OP, there isn't a set endpoint for the story of Hunter x Hunter as Gon's quest to find his dad wasn't the end-all of the narrative.

I really do have to question why Toshiro made the signal device a bell and not something less prone to signalling while in motion. Hell, a scroll with some condition for conveying a message would seem more up their alley and less annoying.

Giving a guy who is going to be engaging in semi-regular melee combat a signaling device that sounds when moved is asking for it to go off every day. Even with Laius' carelessness that bell was still going to go off quite often.

They already had an onmyouji in their crew, give Laius a magical talisman or scroll and hope he doesn't accidentally use it as fish wrap.

Maybe it's just me, but I cannot see half-foot chilchack as anything other than an adult, but the rest are just kids to me. Most of them have big, shining, moe eyes.

In theory, if you were to seed a sword scabbard with the spores, you could have a form changing sword every time you sheath it and pull it out. The only problem is if/when your blade shapeshifts into something that won't fit back inside the sheath. The alternative I guess would be having a piece of rope that has the spores on it and is tied in a loose loop so you can adjust the diameter as needed.

Weaponized telefragging is not a very common occurrence, but I love it when it happens. Although I also couldn't help but remember the teleporting Contractor from 'Darker than Black' who swapped places with an equal amount of matter so he would literally emerge from the wall at times.

I saw it mentioned that the captain's teleportation ability might actually be ethereal Jaunt given it seems to be momentum based. The captain was able to send the giant mushroom down to a floor he hasn't been too in this dungeon. Likewise when he and Kabru jump to the pillar it looks like he's pushing both of them and Kabru's posture supports this. And the previous chapter could be interpreted as the captain "pushing" people around using his ability through light kicks and punches. Nothing concrete but it's a bit odd that the captain could select a destination they haven't been too yet with a teleportation ability

Something else to ruminate on is the method in which a dungeon will actually restock valuable items once it reaches the 4th level of growth. Some of this could be explained by adventurers finding the gear of previous parties, but the picture outright shows a treasure chest so how exactly does the magic of the dungeon create more gold coins or other valuables? The layout also changes and we know this is all a response to an increase in desire and occupation from outsiders, yet this all happens without any overseer like the Mad Sorcerer in this particular dungeon.

I wish more series would get the OVA treatment much like Jojo's bizarre adventure did during the 90s and 00's. I think it's much better for runtimes instead of working around 18-20 minute chunks of plot being put out on a weekly basis you give someone 30+ minutes and a month or two between releases; and I think it would make it easier to organize the chapters leading up to the red dragon, while also making that an episode to itself.

Kui really likes the idea of making supernatural entities more naturalistic looking at her previous anthologies, but it's been back to back in this series to it's benefit. Succubus being shapeshifting mosquitoes, Living armors being mollusk colonies, Mimics being large hermit crabs, and changelings being the result of magic mushroom spores from specific configurations. Things like that really sell the idea of the dungeon being an ecosystem, doubly so when you examine how these creatures behave and how that dictates how the party approaches them. I really enjoy how Kui crafts her worlds, it's something I would like to take to heart when planning out my own campaign settings.

I've read a few stories that tried to borrow living dungeons as a feasible concept, but Dungeon Meshi's the only one where the author actually did their homework. Most just chalk it up to magic, "Wizards be crazy," please don't ask what the giant spider eats when nobody shows up.

Yeah, I forgot to mention it but even the Cleaners are something that takes into account how damage can be repaired in an enclosed environment, while also existing as slugs, silverfish, and other tiny critters. It's all still magic but it retains an internal consistency to it.

On floors populated with vegetation you will find an abundance of wildlife and killer plants. In the regions dominated by corridors you are going to find ambush predators like Mimics, Succubus, treasure bugs (which also explain one part of how treasure "respawns"), wandering spirits and many more. There is an encampment of Orcs occupying the 4th floor that have their own ways of getting food including stealing from the humans who live in the dungeons as well. And a couple roving Golems near Senshi's tent. The flooded floor has it's own microcosm of water-based creatures living together and the trip down has a combination of rainforest creatures and plants that are part anemone. And then after all of that you can add "wizards be crazy" to explain why this dungeon also has shifting terrain, soul binding magic, and monsters that can be manufactured and controlled. On top of the fact that the desires of people entering it can restock the dungeon and produce more monsters on it's own since magic feeds the creation and growth of things inside.

I don't know the author who said this, I believe it was Terry Pratchett. But someone once said that to take a good approach to worldbuilding and writing you need to ask "how do their toilets work" and we know there's an answer in this story.

Can you imagine what a nightmare it would be to have Kabru in your party while a serious shapeshifter was trying to kill your group? He basically makes perfect external copies of people and their mannerisms would be very close to the original as well for as much as Kabru studies people.

In general the fact that monsters re-appear both aids in the idea that the dungeon is an ecosystem, but also helps with character moments. Like I already said, shapeshifters help show how Kabru sees people in high detail, but also shows the Captain's disinterest in anyone else. We also got walking mushrooms both as a hazard that can survive the lack of mana on the first floor, but you also get giant walking changeling mushrooms on lower floors.

It's appropriately mixed between pallet swaps in dungeon crawlers and some kind of living environment.

Could be forgetting stuff, but I think Thistle discovered something was wrong and sealed the lion before it could eat consume any more desires. That's why he and the villagers are missing the desire for things like food but aren't completely drained.

The villagers not having any taste could still be a side effect of them both being dead and thus lacking any physical bodies, and also the length of which they have been in such a state. They simply don't remember what it's like to experience those sensations although you could also be on to something there

The Canaries were doing that to give evacuate people since more desires = more monsters. But it could also have been a pretense to give themselves just cause to launch a formal invasion. The captain's disappearance and the lack of a strong Governor also led to this result.

Alternatively, the book and the lion were both the same entity originally until Thistle separated them and kept the "power" locked up while binding the demon to a tome. It's worth pointing out there is a winged Lion within the Ars Goetia named Vapula so it's not like the lion isn't from the Doom Hell dimension in some way.

I do like how the story presents a legitimate gray area between so called "dark magic" and "regular magic" and outside tapping into a hell dimension a lot of stuff that's "bad" is just outlawed because it either threatens a particular group's authority, makes people feel uncomfortable regarding soul manipulation (until it doesn't), or is just poorly understood with volatile reactions.

Newish manga got a chunk of chapters translated recently titled Frieren at the Funeral and with the premise of an elf grappling with her long life juxtaposed with her human and dwarven companions I was reminded of Dungeon Meshi. A good first three chapters if a bit somber since given the title and subject matter this isn't a happy-go-lucky kind of story.
