Just re-read volume one and I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Yoshida is the Skin Devil. He's the one who said that the hitman brothers "could be any one of us". The creepy scene where he kills one of the two remaining brothers just off-screen could be read multiple ways, especially as that brother had just resolved to take revenge against the Skin Demon. The "You...!" immediately afterward was probably intended to read as him running into Yoshida, who had tracked him down, but there is no definitive indication that Yoshida even noticed the brothers in the nearby crowd (and why would he hunt them down by himself in a dangerous situation with multiple assassins?). I'd argue that the "You...!" can also be read as the brother running into the Skin Demon (as "Yoshida"), who'd heard him talking poo poo and decided to teach him a lesson. The "I guess a pro wouldn't puke" comment could either be Yoshida believing the lone surviving brother, Yoshida deciding to let him off the hook (unlikely, given the vibe he was giving off), or the Skin Devil letting him know that he's now beneath his notice.

Currently, Yoshida represents an organization that claims to have an interest in Denji "living a peaceful life" and "not changing into the Chainsaw Man." Right now we know of one 'organization' with similar goals, and it's Devils.

The counterargument would be that Yoshida was shown using the Octopus Devil after that, but perhaps it's possible that the Skin Devil is able to make use of pacts in human form, or could imitate living humans (in contrast to the brothers who could only imitate corpses) and that was the real Yoshida at that point in the story.

Only way we know of so far for a human to get there is for someone to contract with the Hell Devil and sacrifice themselves.

Side note to that, Makima sent Chainsaw to Hell in the last couple volumes of Part 1, where he slaughtered a ton of devils. Doesn't that mean they were then reborn on Earth? I'm not sure anyone in the series has outright said so, but the devil situation does seem a bit more out of hand than in Part 1, even accounting for how decimated the Public Safety devil hunters are. Just saying it's kind of funny that Chainsaw Man's current celebrity status is due in part to a situation he helped create.

I'm liking the perspective shift in Part 2 and I'm pretty sure it's going to be used to explore all of the hanging questions, just from a perspective outside Denji's which might throw things into a slightly different light. Fujimoto's one-shots demonstrate quite clearly his recurring interest in issues of perception so I'm interested to see if something similar plays out in a longer form like this.

Angel Devil outright states that even if devils don't remember the exact circumstances of their deaths, they all remembered the last thing they heard: the sound of chainsaws revving. Wouldn't be too hard for the smarter devils to put it together.

A few years back Patton Oswalt had a pretty good routine about hearing the phrase "I'm going to fill you up with my goof juice" in a porn film. When he performed it live, he delivered it in a pitch-perfect, horrifying pervert-clown voice. For the recorded CD version, he reverted to using his standard "Southern dumb guy" voice. For whatever reason, I always heard the Future Devil's voice as that former voice; it's probably the perpetual "DOO HOO HOO HOOO" expression on his face that did it. Plus I always thought the Future Devil's body language (in the manga) when Aki stuck his face in his stomach was rather sexual, but maybe that's just me.

"Future Devil as pervert voyeur" really seems like it would have been the best angle to take on the character. But like the Oswalt routine, it ended up with a safer, and more generically wacky, delivery that could only disappoint, and the body language was just goofy flailing.

Good episode still!

I think there are a lot of potential ways to read Makima's smoking, and if nothing else, Fujimoto is someone who obviously gives a lot of thought to symbolism so any of them, all of them, or none of them could be correct.

One is the idea that they are pleasurable but self-destructive. One of the many pursuits the devil hunters indulge in as relief valves from the daily terror and mortal threats associated with their job. Aki already knows from the Curse Devil that he's going to die within two years, so why would he care about the cumulative threat of lung cancer 10+ years down the road? Himeno playfully "saves" him from this threat early in their association, but at the time she probably didn't appreciate the depth of his self-destructive obsession. Under this view, maybe Makima realizes (or is at least presaging) her own self-destruction in pursuit of her own satisfaction.

Another aspect is the way it can be used to convey an intimate interpersonal connection. The weird Japanese thing about "indirect kisses" is relevant here, but it's not necessarily a romantic intimacy. Aki shares the same habit (even the same brand) as Himeno, and that connection even manages to save him through her influence on a devil. Under this view, Makima may be trying, in her own broken way, to connect with humans now that she's gotten everything she thinks she wanted (as well as wanting to indulge in a "drat I'm good" flex like she may have seen in the movies).

Nicotine and substance addiction can also be associated with loss of control, so maybe she feels like she can indulge in this little bit of weakness now that she's "won".

Makima presumably swings her sword at these three and their heads fly off but Quanxi’s arms are not touched

It’s even more mysterious because we don’t see Makima swing her sword, she walks out to meet Quanxi with it and after the decapitation we see Makima without a sword

wonder how the anime will portray weird things like this

Maybe it's something that's in the same general realm of her other known abilities to borrow other people's contracts/abilities as well as to exchange any mortal wounds inflicted on her with other people; maybe she was able to 'borrow' the head-cutting properties of the sword and use it up in the process.

Or she just commanded them heads to pop off.

I always figured it was the latter, that after his big determined build-up to revenge against the Gun Devil, he dies pointlessly in 0.1 seconds along with 1,000 other schmucks. And then goes on to his second and final death trying to kill his friend while retreating into the only other thing that meant anything to him, the childhood that was taken from him.

Both, in their own way, the "worst possible death" for him, and he gets to experience them both. The Future Devil, pervert voyeur that he is, is over the moon.

The Chainsaw Man escapades seem to be loosely approved, as long as he doesn't reveal himself, but outside of that, it's not clear if they could call on him to do anything or have authority over him anymore.

If he turns into Chainsaw Man twice a year, he's good. He turns into Chainsaw Man no times at all, he's even better. Yoshida's group wants to keep Chainsaw Man off the streets so they pay him a monthly fee NOT to turn into Chainsaw Man.

Yeah, I guess it's ambiguous due to wording/translation issues but I would assume that the determinant is where the current manifestation incarnated rather than where it dies. It doesn't matter if you die on Earth or in Hell, if you incarnated on Earth you will reincarnate in Hell and vice versa.

It is interesting how all three of the horsemen we've seen so far have connections with humans that go beyond killing/eating and are more social in nature (control, ownership, and how would you describe it for Famine -- coercion maybe?), which if all goes well could lead to something akin to sympathy (and if it gets twisted into going wrong, you get Makima), so I guess it makes sense that they would be the devils most vested in heading off the apocalypse. I'm very interested in seeing how this also all ties into the earlier mentions of parasocial relationships, Chainsaw Man fandom, and other aspects of human interrelationships that Fujimoto explored so adeptly in the recent one-shots.

Yoshida's threats are pretty toothless considering Public Safety was virtually wiped out by the end of the Makima incident, and considering what both Denji and Nayuta are capable of. I'd almost suspect him of working for another party and trying to foment Denji's distrust in Public Safety (and therefore deprive them of one of their few remaining competent devil hunters), but he still seems genuinely puzzled after Denji leaves so that doesn't quite make sense either.

In the end I'm satisfied if it's simply that Yoshida is as big a stupid idiot as everyone else.

Cute girl wouldn't work, Nayuta saw right through the last one who had ulterior motives. Though it probably wouldn't be hard to find someone smoother than Asa.

Since Public Safety seems to consist of Yoshida plus one other random doofus, this is probably the best last-ditch plan they could come up with to try to confound Nostradamus' predicted apocalypse.
