"The numbers could go up again," he told reporters. "As you know, epi curves can zig zag," referring to a diagram that shows the distribution of cases over time.

It's not about keeping the people on the ship from getting sick. It's about keeping everyone on land from getting sick.

And outside of the cabin fever a cruise ship isn't the worst place in the world for this to happen. They have a known population that was exposed and can control their access off the ship. And the ship has medical facilities and the crew is trained on illness prevention and cleaning (for norovirus).

Imagine if it happened at Tokyo Disneyland. There would be no way to contain everyone and give them checkups.

I realize that, I'm just kind of surprised there aren't better options than keeping everyone cooped up on the same boat. They don't necessarily have to go ashore, they could put the people who are almost certainly not infected into another boat, then once the correct period of time passes without symptoms let them ashore. Hell, Japan may even have more than one extra boat! Keeping them cooped up in a room that small seems like a disaster in the making once one person manages to catch it.

Of course, no one cares about them because they are basically Indian serfs. It's certainly safer alone in your stateroom cabin, although who knows if its actually safe. I wonder about the air circulation

Then they waited a bit too long didn't they. They could've separated those infected and likely to be infected, in fact the earlier they separated folks and the more groups they created would probably mean several of the groups would end up completely disease free, instead of what we have now where it seems pretty clear that basically everyone on that ship is going to get the disease.

Not pretending to be an expert here, just a regular guy. I understand the concept of the quarantine, just wondering if it could've been executed a bit differently.

DID YOU KNOW that Pangolins are the most-trafficked non-human mammal? According to National Geographic tens of thousands of pangolins are poached every year, killed for their scales for use in traditional Chinese medicine for treating ailments ranging from lactation difficulties to arthritis. And for their meat, a delicacy among some ultra-wealthy in China and Vietnam.

They are the only animal covered head to toe in keratin scales which are somewhat like gigantic fingernails. Though they look and act a lot like anteaters and armadillos, they're actually more closely related to bears, cats and dogs.

My mom works with the Red Cross in San Diego every now and then. The other day she was conscripted into driving this huge Red Cross truck with supplies in it, things like baby food, diapers, soap, clothes, etc. They went to a store to make sure they had everything that was requested, then drove it to the Naval base in San Diego to be delivered to all the people there in quarantine for the coronavirus. Obviously there are children and babies there.

Luckily, she just dropped off the goods in a warehouse, she didn't actually give it to the potentially infected people which is what I thought she meant at first

(If the answer is "the bio lab made it!" put on a dunce cap because we don't know what makes viruses able to jump the species line and infect us. If we did we'd have much better ideas about how to stop them.)

Day Man posted:

Labs like that do research to try to understand what makes viruses jump the species gap and to understand what makes them more and less infectious. Some of that work involves modifying them and seeing what that does to the virulence in various animal models. It seems plausible to me that this sort of research was being done and it accidentally got released.

I've seen debates in the research community over the ethics of this sort of research, and the general conclusion seems to be that it is necessary for us to learn about these things. Biosafety labs are not immune to operator error and/or poor lab practices, however.

It is also completely believable that this thing is natural and made the jump on its own. Without any evidence to support the lab claim, I would default to the "nature is loving us up" position.

Edit: here is the article I was remembering about the ethics of this sort of research: https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2017/12/19/571744856/nih-lifts-ban-on-research-that-could-make-deadly-viruses-stronger

what this smarter guy said, basically. I'm not trying to push a conspiracy theory, I think the virus PROBABLY came about the normal way. I'm just not quite prepared to eliminate the possibility that it's manmade, and the main lab of its type being in Wuhan is definitely a coincidence if nothing else
