The six-year streak finally ended! Ever since 2016, January had ALWAYS belonged to the IWGP Champion based off their always incredible title match/es at Wrestle Kingdom. The only quasi-exception came in 2018 when Kazuchika Okada drew with the "None of the Above" option, and even then it wasn't another champion who tied it up with New Japan. But all that came to an end in 2022, as another streak continued instead: Hangman Adam Page was Champ of the Month for the 3rd month in a row, beating IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada by 6 votes to give AEW the first non-New Japan January in over half a decade! Third place went to TJPW's Miyu Yamashita, which is only right, since she was the coolest champion on the poll. But January itself belonged\ to Hangman Adam Page, to AEW, and to Cowboy poo poo!             Eligible Champions are chosen on a combination of accessibility, prestige/notoriety and by overwhelming popular request. For promotions where lengthy periods of time pass with no title defenses, promos, appearances, shows etc those champions will be dropped from the poll for that period only, then return when once again relevant - for instance, Bandido (PWG), Dr. Britt Baker DMD (AEW Women's), Jon Moxley (GCW), Konosuke Takeshita (DDT), Miyu Yamashita (TJPW) & Syuri (Stardom) have not defended their belts this month, and so have been dropped from the poll. I'm not including Lashley's utter joke of a title "reign". The monthly "None of the Above" option is a valid potential "winner" and has "won" the poll in the past, feel free to use this as a protest vote if you so wish. Now onto the eligible contenders for the month just gone. Feel free to make an argument for/against any particular champion you think does/doesn't deserve the votes of other posters in this thread. Hangman Adam Page (AEW Champion) - The result was never really in doubt but in the end it simply didn't matter. Hangman Adam Page and Murderhawk Monster Lance Archer's Texas Death match was an astonishing accomplishment, and absolutely incredible performances from both Page and Archer. It was brutal, bloody and almost perfectly put together, and when it was over there could be no doubt that Page was far from the "fake" cowboy that Dan Lambert had accused him of being. Archer's loss didn't hurt his reputation as a terrifying force of nature in the slightest, it just served to showcase how tough he was and therefore how incredibly tough Page had to be to beat him. In a very, very different way to the entry below, this was absolutely a contender for Match of the Year. Kazuchika Okada (IWGP World Heavyweight Champion) - Reminding everybody yet again just how absolutely incredible he is, and how great New Japan can still be in spite of the seemingly cursed COVID years and the still heavily restricted crowds, Okada and Tetsuya Naito had a near 30-minute classic that defied time by seemingly blasting by in moments. It wasn't just a repeat of their earlier great matches either, both brought something new to their exchanges as they worked around their history, their abilities, and their knowledge of the other to deliver one of the best matches of the year... again! Katsuhiko Nakajima (FORMER GHC Champion) - Nakajima is young, handsome, talented and the kind of talent a halfway competent promotion could easily build itself around, especially given the high excitement and energy that came from his taunting and challenges towards former Dragon Gate (and now New Japan top star) Shingo Takagi as part of the build to more potential New Japan/NOAH joint shows. Yes, you'd be a fool to waste or gently caress up such an obvious home-run of a champion as Katsuhiko Nakajima. Kazuyuki Fujita (GHC Champion) - At 51-years-old, Fujita refused to lose to Nakajima and added to that in the build-up to the match by not taking it seriously and laughing off ignoring Nakajima angrily pouring beer over his head, simply laughing at the idea that Nakajima could ever be a challenge to him. He then won the match by hitting his finisher, breaking the pin himself then pinning him again before laughing off another challenge, this time by 49-year-old Masato Tanaka. Nakajima, already forgotten as a complete non-entity by the new Champion, meanwhile goes to join Kenoh and Kiyomiya as exciting young (or at least younger!) talents sacrificed on the altar of the past, leaving NOAH's top champions and apparently "best" wrestlers all old men long past their primes. Jonathan Gresham (ROH World Champion) - Gresham continued his tour of Independents, defending the ROH Title against all comers including Chris Ridgeway, Cody Chhun, Dean Allmark, Santana and Emeritus to keep the ROH Title visible during the interim period before the promotion starts up again from its hiatus. Mickie James (Impact Knockouts Champion) - Mickie James defeated Tasha Steelz at No Surrender to retain her Knockouts title. Becky Lynch (Raw Women's Champion) - Becky defeated Lita at the Blood Money show in Saudi Arabia, where after apparently being overwhelmed by facing her old idol in the build-up to the match, Becky took both the Twist of Fate and the Moonsault before hitting her own finish and winning to retain the title. She'll now face Bianca Belair at Wrestlemania, who is seeking revenge for the humiliating loss of her title (Smackdown, they swapped the titles, remember, for absolutely no reason) to a returning Becky at Summerslam. Brock Lesnar (WWE Champion) - Brock lost the title to Lashley after being attacked by Roman at the Royal Rumble. Lashley was injured and WWE knew it. There was an Elimination Chamber at the Blood Money show in Saudi Arabia. The injured Lashley was taken out of the match without ever actually entering it. Brock then won the title back. The entire period between Brock losing and winning back the title was entirely pointless and didn't matter. Oh well. Kento Miyahara (Triple Crown Heavyweight Champion) - The Best of the Best lived up to his nickname by managing to have a really fun extended title defense against Abdullah Kobayashi at AJPW's Korakuen, before sitting down to enjoy watching his former dojo senpai and real life rival, Katsuhiko Nakajima lose his own title defence against a much older challenger. Kento's next challenge will be defending the belt against AJPW's Booker and resident giant, Shuji Ishikawa at AJPW's Ota Ward show. Thanks to GEORGE W BUSHI! Moose (Impact World Champion) - At No Surrender, Moose defeated W. Mprrissey (the former Big Cass from WWE) to retain the Impact World Title. Roman Reigns (WWE Universal Champion) - Roman Reign defeated Goldberg in 6 minutes at the Blood Money show in Saudi Arabia by referee stoppage, after the ref failed to notice or care that Goldberg had his hands on the ropes. Reigns now goes on to face Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania where it will be title vs. title and winner takes all until the next show when WWE have already said they'll just give the respective title back to whoever lost it. Oh well. Tsukushi Haruka (ICEx∞ Champion) - At the RE:BORN show in late February, Tsukushi Haruka successfully defended her title for the 4th time against tag team specialist Maika Ozaki. Arisa Nakajima (Beyond the SEA Champion) - Nakajima made the first defence of her reign by defeating her good friend and tag team partner, Hanako Nakamori, in a match suitably violent for the team that calls themselves Violence Princess. Facing down challenges from rookies Rico Kaiju and Riko Kawahata, Nakajima told them to settle it among themselves before challenging her. Thanks to GEORGE W BUSHI! Charlotte Flair (Smackdown Women's Champion) - Charlotte Flair is scheduled to face Ronda Rousey at Wrestlemania, but first she had to get past former champion Naomi, given a title shot out of fear by General Manager Sonya Deville who realized abusing her power was putting her in danger of a beating herself. After a near-20 minute match, Flair defeated Naomi to continue the inevitable ride to Wrestlemania and another accolade to add to her long list. KAI (Open the Dream Gate Champion) - KAI's first title defense of both 2022 and of this reign as Champion came against Takashi Yoshida who... well, the best most people have to say about the former Cyber Kong is that he's a solid, unspectacular wrestler. Still, it took KAI nearly 20 minutes to defeat him and continue his first reign as Open the Dream Gate Champion. Minoru Fujita (Super Asia Champion) - After almost 7 months, Minoru Fujita once again defended his Super Asia title, this time in a Last Man Standing match.... and he was NOT the last man standing! Baliyan Akki (Super Asia Champion) - At Night 2 of Gatoh Move ChocoPro's 200th show, #1 Contender to the Super Asia Title (interim titles aren't a real thing) Baliyan Akki went ahead and won the actual belt, defeating Minoru Fujita in a Last Man Standing match to win his first singles title in 5 years! (None of the Above) - If you look at this list of champions and go,"WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!?!" or you just want to know the results without voting for anybody in particular, then None of the Above is the option for you!

Had to go with Okada, even though that Hangman match was absolutely loving incredible. Watching Okada and Naito surpass all the limits of the restricted crowd was just masterful to watch unfold.

GWB did a write-up if I wanted to use it but the polls are already regularly packed almost to the limit of what the forums' poll software will allow, so I'm more looking to remove people then add them. If there's enough interest to add the G-REX Champion I can do it for next month but I'll have to look at the stats for the last couple of years to figure out who to drop to try and keep the numbers within reason.

With just over 3 days to go, it's looking like Hangman might make it 4 months in a row, the first to do so since Jon Moxley in 2020. But there ARE still 3 days to go and plenty of time for votes to make all the difference in the world, unless you DON'T vote in which case you are spitting on the memory of Hangman's dead birthday horse.

In January, Hangman Adam Page broke a six-year streak to become the first non-New Japan January Champion of the Month. In February, he equaled another streak as he became the first wrestler in over a year to win 4 months in a row, equaling fellow AEW Champion Jon Moxley. What will March and beyond bring? Only 2 wrestlers have managed 5 months in a row (Kazuchika Okada and Byran Danielson) and only one has ever managed 6 months in a row (Kazuchika Okada), can Hangman meet or break that record too? That's to be answered in the future though, so far 2022 has belonged firmly to AEW and Hangman Adam Page in particular, and with over 70% of the vote this month over nearest competitor Kazuchika Okada's 14% (and Baliyan Akki with 7% in 3rd place) it loooks like people aren't going to get tired of "Cowboy poo poo" anytime soon.
