It's a new year and the show is finally back from a longer-than-usual holiday break. And we kick it off with the amazing Aubrey Plaza! And the... existing Sam Smith https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58WrjKNDPgY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hP04LSMbiPY An air-only version, basically the same but with a few alternate angles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M02lPFpN_zg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeR8K5dsCvk Surprisingly only one Thursday promo this week. Oh yea and this is a huge change https://twitter.com/nbcsnl/status/1615908214561800193 Absolutely monumentally huge change. Basically no more queueing up for days, no camping out, you sign up online and then you can wait for a few hours on Friday to see if you get a ticket https://twitter.com/standbyline/status/1616159060444807169 I don't know how to feel about it tbh. On one hand I am relieved as I am in no shape to do the traditional standby line campout and if I can actually get to NYC this year I'll be thankful for this new process. On the other hand it's a damned tradition that I'm sad to see go. https://twitter.com/georqehot/status/1616155223587975169 A few looks back on the standby line https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1B1lwdaDMkQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2228vJkx0CA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PasdWN7OSjY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80_CytGk7M0 Waiting 16 hours for the Steve Carell with Ella Mai show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8mtefVlrVg And what would be the penultimate standby line, from last month https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uxu2rTVhq4I I will say that this is a pretty unintentionally hilarious tweet in response to this news https://twitter.com/henryschwartzz/status/1615927948925624321 RIP the multi-day standby line, a rite of passage for the young and hearty. At least they're keeping some of the traditions alive with the new shorter line. https://twitter.com/standbyline/status/1616644357888831490 And tonight's Vintage is Sigourney Weaver with The Ting Tings from January 16 2010. Mainly memorable for being the first ep after the Conan Tonight Show drama bomb dropped.

Weird having a Joe Biden bit and have it not be James Austin doing it.

Sports reporting cold opens are pretty rare, aren't they? You could tell the audience wasn't really having it, the George Santos stuff was good though. Plaza's monologue was killer though.

Uh-oh I think they got a newbie running the sound mix again. Holy smokes, loads of cameos so far.

Was 50/50 on whether they’d do a White Lotus thing and I’m glad they did.

Smith's second performance was way more interesting than the first, and also than most MGs

Yeah there's got to be a story behind that performance. Interesting stuff. I like when superstar artists take the back seat to their supporting musicians. Prince played here in Toronto and the concert made the news because he stayed backstage almost the entire show; people thought it was arrogant, eccentric or just Some Weird Prince poo poo, but it was the last show of the tour and he wanted his band to get the spotlight. This episode has been bold and racy and hilarious. Who's this last cameo in the private eye sketch?

Sharon Stone. She was in Smith's second performance At least Stone gets a chance for redemption after being railroaded 30 years ago

That was the first SNL I've watched live in years and that was great. I figured Plaza would be solid but she basically caried the episode just being a big part of almost every sketch. I think the only cameo that kind of fell flat for me was actually the Parks characters just because characters from a decade ago popping in never work for me. That's probably going to be the best of the season

That was a surprisingly solid episode, though I wonder how many people got what the Miss Universe sketch was referencing. I don't think the original video went that viral. Also that was a pretty good Tony Hawk impersonator they got. I wonder what the real Tony Hawk is up to these days.

Yeah I didn't know it a was reference to anything but pageants being weird isn't a long walk. But apparently that France thing blew up on TikTok this week

I thought the Miss Universe sketch was the weakest sketch of the night; the premise just wasn't strong enough to hang an entire sketch on. Overall though, I thought it was a solid episode, probably the best they've done so far this season. Aubrey was a great host.

I enjoyed it for the absurdism and the Property Brothers debasing themselves and Tony Hawk joining the fun. It was the right mix of stupid and yelling for me.

Tonight! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rK0fF6qzrnI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUvnaZ-X0dw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cErv7PhYIcE No cast pics this week, oddly. Looks like the editors' strike, if NBC doesn't give them a contract, is likely to happen next week, maybe, idk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-D16-UEn0U For tonight, Michael B Jordan and Lil Baby make their SNL debuts! Well, Lil Baby was one of like 8 "guests" of the May 18 2019 ep, whose supposed musical guest was DJ Khaled, who mostly let other people like Meek Mill, SZA, Lil Wayne, J Balvin, Jeremih, John Legend, and Lil Baby do the singing. Not sure what his deal is, but it seems to be working for him so go him. Anyway Lil Baby is on also. And the Vintage is Natasha Lyonne with Japanese Breakfast from May 21 2022.
