playing bomb rush cyberfunk. this game is pretty fun but wow they sure did just, wholly and utterly recreate jet set radio future, down to a lot of the parts of jet set radio future that were never begging to be recreated. it's a weird game because even for the parts of it that are distinct and new it is really not helping me break out of this weird feeling that i've played this entire game before and this is just the same thing with like, some slight mechanical differences that kinda almost try to make it feel different but don't actually succeed at all

i mean i guess evangelion is sort of abstractly about violence being bad but i'd say there's a strong reason why it's so visceral in the specific ways that it is, same with gundam. they need to be like that to convey the emotions of the characters involved. you can't always depict someone going through something weird and hosed up without showing something viscerally weird and hosed up

finished bomb rush cyberfunk. it was okay but i am pretty heavily disappointed with a lot about it, it fixes a few things about jet set radio future but otherwise has all of the same problems, sometimes even amplifying them pretty badly, and despite taking a more story heavy direction the story is... honestly way worse than either jet set radio game. way more thematically confused and for its heavier character focus really lacks any actual characters and the main villain kind of sucks a lot. the bad guy of jet set radio was never a complex character but it's more inherently fun to take down an evil rich guy than, a guy who is just sort of a dick for petty reasons they explain five seconds before you kill him and weirdly gives the whole police force a pass on being evil by being used as a plot excuse for why they're evil instead of them just uh, being evil because it's jet set radio and the cops are supposed to suck. this is the first time i've ever seen a jet set radio-type game portray its major cop character in a sympathetic way and it's kind of surreal. also tries way too hard to be dark and violent sometimes and it always comes off really stupid

otoh it was incredibly funny to have the main villain appear in a giant death robot (recycled from an earlier boss fight with zero changes) saying "I HAVE LEARNED THAT ART IS WAR"

my overall thoughts on zegapain itself are that it had a handful of neat ideas but i feel like rather than having a strong back half it uh. just kinda went from dreadfully dull to, watchable. it got mildly more entertaining but basically none of my complaints about it ever subsided and i never felt like it hit a truly interesting note tonally or thematically and most of it is spent belaboring pretty obvious poo poo. there are some ideas for characters i like but very few of them are utilized in ways that stick with me or are all that entertaining to watch. the mech cg is awful and makes action scenes a bit of a headache to look at. it's... fine but i can't say i share any love for it as far as weird 2000s mecha goes also it had a mildly weird thing going on with how the setup for zegapains means they're only ever piloted by men and women only ever serve as support and i kinda hate when mecha does that stuff, and it's not really tied into the show's themes in any way so it's just an odd... thing. was kinda cool that lu shen was gay since he was the only character i really found myself liking much but even that was kinda just a side note The Colonel fucked around with this message at 04:24 on Sep 21, 2023 |

skipped through zegapain adp. impressive how they made a two hour movie of loving nothing, half of the movie is them reusing scenes from the show directly and they don't really do anything interesting to recontextualize most of it. it's just a prequel that hits all of the exact same beats the show does with very few meaningful differences. it randomly has a scene where kaminagi flashes forward to the events of the show and then it never gets brought up again?? the most interesting thing about it is that it shows a few characters who are dead by the time the show happens but they're not like. interesting ones. they don't really do anything. i guess you can say the movie is vaguely presenting an alternate reality scenario because there are random bits that don't line up with the show but like... if that's what they were going for they should've written it to be an interesting story and not a completely tedious and inconclusive one. absolutely nothing in that movie, that demanded it be two whole hours long The Colonel fucked around with this message at 18:10 on Sep 21, 2023 |

my only complaint with the clip is that the movie actors really do not fit the original designs. dont really get using the clip itself as a judge of the whole thing because it's just one of the random early bits of setup, it's slower than the movie but the movie was zooming at turbo speed through six books of material

the scott pilgrim video game is okay but it's in that weird hosed up class of rpg beat em ups where if you don't build correctly the game is near unplayably hard and once you buff up your stats enough nothing in the game is remotely difficult, and the actual design of it just generally isn't very good. that's, about average quality for a beat em up, though

i dont think the cartoon is going to appeal to everyone who likes the movie but that's just because the movie is so cut down and fundamentally different enough that, they're basically different stories with different appeals. i like the comics because they actually give decent jokes and screen time to the side cast and that's where most of the actually interesting parts of the basic writing are, none of the stuff with scott specifically sticks out that much in comparison beyond how the presence of other characters further informs the specific aspects of him the story is dealing with

and then if you ever want to read any of crossbone gundam you'll have, very slightly more context for what any of it is about. you know if you uh, you needed context, for crossbone gundam. the gundam manga where one of the villains is an old man with a grappling hook capable of surviving in the vacuum of space

no thats fine. i like higurashi. the weird jokes in the original higurashi vns are fitting for something made by one guy to sell at comiket who never expected it would ever get big. i dont like, any of the various higurashi side media, or higanbana, and most of his non-wtc writing in general ranges from boring to actively awful
