I've been seeing a lot of interest in Solo Leveling from different directions, YT streamers, anime sites, social media, etc. Might be one to put an alert by.

So, along with my three faves from last season (Frieren, The Apothcary Diaries, Shangri La Frontier), I'm going to be trying these:

Dungeon Meshi (Delicious in Dungeon) - It's TRIGGER, and I'll always give anything by them at least a shot. Read the first four chapters of the manga and stopped when I heard it was being animated, but what I read so far was an interesting setup and after watching that short they did for the manga a couple years back I'm dead certain the right folks are doing this adaptation. I'm always up for more food porn. :chef:

Gekkan Mousou Kagaku (Delusional Monthly Magazine) - This just looks like crazy fun full of zany antics. (Whatever happened to zany antics, anyway? I miss them.) The trailer animation was gorgeous, and hey, that dog is a charmer. Besides, I've often been told I'm delusional, so kindred spirits and all that.

Harimaware! Koinu (Stick It Around! Koinu) - I do like a nice shorts series as an appetizer, and this one looks like it will be fun with a slight touch of silly.

Isekai de Mofumofu Nadenade suru Tame ni Ganbattemasu (Fluffy Paradise) - Or as the translation of the title goes, "I Got Reincarnated to Save Another World But I Just Want to Pet Animals." Honestly, that's all I want out of life as well.

Kyuujitsu no Warumono-san (Mr. Villain's Day Off) - Speaking of fluffy animals, PANDAS! This looks like another silly, yet charming series, and at this stage of my life I need as many of those as I can get.

Pon no Michi (The Way of Pon) - Maybe it's because I'm rapidly approaching senior citizenhood, but right now a slice-of-life show based around mahjong sounds really appealing. :corsair:

Sasaki to Pii-chan (Sasaki and Peeps) - I'd read the first couple chapters of the manga, but when someone in the Fall 2023 thread explained this as "Random salaryman purchases magic bird played by Aoi Yuki..." I interrupted reading with STOP DRILLING, YOU HIT OIL. It's Aoi Yuki's world, we're just living in it.

Urusei Yatsura (2022) 2nd Season - David Productions has been nailing this remake, and I'm looking forward to another season of the Alpha Waifu, Lum.

On the maybe list:

Himesama "Goumon" no Jikan desu ('Tis Time for "Torture," Princess) - the premise isn't all that unique (What if the Sleepy Princess was hungry instead?), but it could be okay. If they run the gag into the ground, at least it'll be funny once. We hope.

Metallic Rouge - While this looks like it could be really impressive (bones doing a good mech show? NAHHHHHHHH...), I'm just not in the mood for a mech show right now. If it does turn out to be good, I could use it for filler if Spring or Summer look empty.

Saijaku Tamer wa Gomi Hiroi no Tabi wo Hajimemashita (The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash) - "Isekai slime-tamer" pushes all the wrong buttons for me these days, but somehow the trailer looked appealing enough for me to at least consider it. Same as above, might use it as a fill-in during a weaker season if I hear from others that it's good.

And I haven't touched on series like "Solo Leveling" that aren't of interest to me, but which still looks to be excellent fare for shonen fans. I don't understand folks saying there's nothing good this season. They must be the type who look at a fridge full of food and say there's nothing to eat because none of it is filet mignon or lobster.

Already reading on a few confirmed casualties in Japan. Just hoping the people there are okay overall.

In other news, the first episode of "Fluffy Paradise" has dropped. It's nice and sweet and cute and I'll keep watching because Bob knows it looks to be one hell of a clusterfuck of a year coming and I could use the relief.

Oh, I dunno about that. It's painfully clear from the opening and ending credits that she's going to make a friend/pet of that dragon, and I'd call that OP as gently caress.

Something I hadn't thought about until I heard it on a video the other day is that elf fans have been eating real good these past couple of years. Not just Frieren and Marcille, but we had "Otaku Elf" last Spring and "Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf" has recently been announced. Then there's all of Cid's crew in "Eminence in Shadow." Now all we need is "Plus-Sized Elf" and [REDACTED BEFORE THIS POST BRINGS IT INTO BEING BECAUSE I APPEAR TO BE A GODDAMNED CASSANDRA] ...

...okay, maybe not that last one. Who can say. Either way, we're having an Eflstravaganza here.

In other developments, I've decided to drop a couple of shows:

Pon no Michi didn't interest me after the first episode, but if you like cute girls doing things cutely, and are willing to wade through the rules of Mah Jong, you might like it.

Mr. Villain's Day Off was repeating the same gags in the first episode, and Miss Kuroitsu from The Monster Development Department did it far better.

In turn, I'm going to pick up The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic after trying the first episode on the recommendation of a few folks I trust and finding it to be a good start. All three of my holdovers from last season continue to be excellent, whoever said Fluffy Paradise's protag isn't OP really needs to roll that back, and I'm sticking with Sasaki & Peeps, but right now if feels like multiple personality syndrome with all the different plotlines going on.

I'd call it a safe guess that other sci-fi anime (among other media) referred to such in the past, this is just the first one to do so when it's not a fictional creation.

So it's an anime version of "The Story of O?" After that first episode of "Gushing Over Magical Girls," I could see them trying it.

Perfect timing, I just went over my feelings for the Winter.

Tried and dropped

Delusional Monthly Magazine - Every so often I try something that just looks out of the ordinary compared to the rest of the season's fare. Sometimes it pays off (Oddtaxi, Akiba Maid War), and sometimes it's like this. An interesting premise, but that's all it has going for it. The characters are annoying, the story is trite, the animation feels perfunctory, and after a half dozen episodes I had to move on.

Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! - This is a perfectly by-the-numbers romance with the distinguishing detail being the whole thing takes place in Hokkaido in Winter. If you like rom-coms, you could do worse. If you don't, you won't be missing anything.

Mr. Villain's Day Off, Pon no Michi, 'Tis Time for "Torture," Princess - All three got too repetitive for me before the first episode was over.

Continuing into Spring 2024

Delicious in Dungeon - Marcille is my second favorite elf in animation (third place is Herbie the Dentist from Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer), and everyone's gay for Senshi. Or at least, that's what TRIGGER thinks with all those pantsu shots of the guy. The story's taken an interesting turn here at the midpoint of the season, but the eats are still just as tasty. TRIGGER is doing a marvelous job adapting the series and I'm here for all of it.

Urusei Yatsura - The old ways are still the best, and you can't get much older in anime than a Takahashi rom-com. I like that David Productions is skipping over all the gristle and just giving us the good stuff.

Completed

Fluffy Paradise - Harmless fluff ( :holy: ) that is unlikely to see a season two. Breezy & forgetable, it didn't make me want to turn it off so I give it a 6.

Sasaki and Peeps - I'm as confused by this series as Serie was with Methode, but much like those two, I giving it passing marks. Maybe season 2 will be less confusing?

The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash - More harmless fluff, and much like the other fluff, it gets a 6.

The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic - This was my surprise of the season, even if the surprise was mild. Came into it expecting Yet Another Goddamned Isekai, but was entertained by the characterization of the protagonist and his friends to their situation. And the way the story has developed has kept me interested enough that I hope more seasons get greenlit.

Shangri-La Frontier - The best video-game focused anime EVAR, with my second favorite opening of the season. (First is the opening to MASHLE season two. Not a fan of the show but by god does "Bling-Bang-Bang-Born" make you want to get up and eat creampuffs.) I've said this a lot, but it's true: This show is junk food. High quality junk food. A Five Guys burger with all the fixings, chili-cheese fries, and a chocolate malt from the Coldstone Creamery next door. Or a pizza you get from that hole-in-the-wall place in town that makes all the chains look and taste like cardboard. Absolutely delicious, uttterly empty calories, and I so dearly hope that it gets more seasons.

The Apothecary Diaries - Speaking of more seasons, the immediate announcement of a second one of this show had me jumping for joy. Maomao is a delightful little gremlin, and her adventures are equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking. The way her and Jinshi bounce off one another was a joy to behold. The animation is wonderful, Aoi Yuki hits it out of the park once more with a stellar performance, and more Kevin Penkin music is always appreciated.

And then there's...

Frieren - I do not have sufficient words to say how magnificent this series is, so I'll tell you why it struck me particularly hard. My father died in July 2020 of old age. My mother, who'd been fighting cancer for almost a decade, decided it was time to go and followed him in April 2021. Losing them both is the space of less than a year threw me completely out of whack for months. What helped bring me out of it was this manga I learned of from a video by Gigguk, a story of loss and how one copes with it, of moving on, making new connections, keeping the good memories, and learning about yourself. Then the team at Madhouse took an already fantastic story and turned it into an all-time classic fantasy. I've been watching anime since the original "Astro Boy," and while this is my personal opinion, I can honestly say this isn't just my favorite series on the season, or of the year. It's my favorite series ever.

So yeah, it's been a good season. I've made my picks for Spring and will post them in that thread when it's ready. Which would be right now.
