i loving loved this. incredibly charming, knows when to be funny and make goofy faces and when to lean into the romance, the concept was cool without being overly cloying, the style was great. this is at the top of the things i'm most excited to keep watching this season now.

holy cow yes. we'll see how the rest of the cast shapes up but i thought the first episode was excellent

yuki's unexpected outburst of joy at the end of the episode is an incredible anime moment

also, i like funny faces and sign of affection has plenty of that, but i was really impressed with some of the shot compositions. hats off to whoever made standing outside of a red robin analogue look this compelling.

a sign of affection continues to majorly own for much the same reasons as last week. the scene where oushi and yuki talk in sign language is such a burner - it's a really cool piece of animation and they effectively use the way oushi talks in sign to convey a lot about his character

if you're into shoujo romance and you're not on this one yet you're missing out, it's absolutely fantastic and easily my favorite show of the season so far

the body language in general in this show is fascinating. i really like paying attention to peoples movements when they are out of yuki's line of sight, because it ends up creating these very personal moments between the viewer and the character. kind of like a physical monologue i guess

the direction continues to be good in sign of affection. i like how the outdoor scenes are a bunch of shots pointed at the sky mixed in with lingering moments of giant spaces surrounding tiny bodies. dear itsuomi, please help yuki find this big beautiful world.

i guess since so much of the show is from yuki's perspective it's possible to forget that everyone is gorgeous. her viewpoint might color the framing and artstyle every once in a while

i still like sign of affection quite a bit. the visuals, editing, and perspective work are great, and it's kind of nice to have a romance show where the couples just spend entire episodes figuring out how to communicate with each other.

the newest episode also did the 'bring color into your world metaphor' multiple times so i could never dislike this show

metallic rouge has multiple jokes about the plot being kind of contrived and convoluted. its not parody exactly but its clearly being playful.

i can definitely see people struggling over whether something like naomi switching jobs 4 times over the course of 3 episodes or whatever is convoluted and dumb vs funny (i vote funny, especially after all of her secret identities and double crossings are resolved by taking pto).

i do agree that handling it with pto is pretty good. even squid people think time off is logical

honestly there's a hypothetical version of this show that's a little less grand in its sci-fi ambitions and just stays a buddy cop thing on mars that's an aoty contender for me. up till about the end of the casino episode i was loving it. it lost me when it started trying to make the larger scale sci-fi work in earnest.

i do like that the alien envoy to all of humanity is so bad at communicating with children, but i also agree that cutting a bunch of sci-fi stuff for more naomi and rouge interaction would have been great.

Probably how the mecha element is a big abrupt intrusion on a grounded setting, and different characters with different familiarity/buy-in to that react differently and it contextualizes the fights a lot. Beyond that it's not that similar, Bravern is pretty high concept and not personal and metaphorical to nearly the same extent. It's also way faster paced if that was a thing that stuck out to you about SSSS.

yeah they are very different in direction and themes, but i really like when the mundane is constantly interrupted with these absurd/alien elements that the characters kind of just accept.

Bravern is about the imposition of genre values. Bravern himself is pretty much overtly powered by Braves vibes, and it works because the enemies themselves are overtly powered by depression vibes. Everyone else simply has to wrap their heads around the new rules.
Samflam is about the imposition of genre outcomes. The mechanics of a hero show are falling down over the heads of people who were either not prepared for it or are beholden to assumptions about it that don't hold. Those who have internalized the genre assumptions are forced to figure out how they can put them into practice from scratch.
Gridman is about the imposition of genre imagery. When you break it down, it's basically just a "monsters as metaphors for anxiety and growth" play, with really good production decisions and execution. Gridman himself barely even does anything narratively. Material consequences, outside the thematic problems of resetting and stasis, are not really what anyone is interested in, in contrast to both Bravern and Samflam, which ask, in different ways, how far its protagonist is willing to go in the face of real horrors.

one of sign of affections biggest strengths is how it employs perspective + its strong sense for shot composition. and as a liker of shameless visual metaphors, i have to show my appreciation for how episode 1 is full of dark, empty, snowy scenes and in the final episode everything is framed like this:
