*minor spoilers* one of Ryoko Kui's main focus areas for fantasy races is how the different lifespans of various races affect their outlooks and cross-species interactions, not just for long lived species like elves and dwarves but also for "shorter lived" ones like halflings and orcs. The elves and dwarves have a semi-antagonistic relationship with both having very paternalistic views of humans and other shorter lived races. Ryoko Kui also goes the extra mile in specifically *which* groups of elves and dwarves we get to meet but that gets into major spoiler territory beyond saying they absolutely rock.

As Laios pointed out, her deal is magic and she's very good at it, not so much other things.logger posted:I just realized in part of the intro where a giant Senshi is standing in floor 2 there is a party of adventurers tying a rope to both a dog and a mandrake. They came prepared!

Ryoko Kui apparently plays a bunch of western RPGs / roguelikes, and also occasionally likes trolling developers:

Rohan Kishibe posted:I'm sure only manga readers would possibly give a poo poo, and I don't know if it's an early instalment thing or just a dub thing or what, but the Orc chief keeps distinguishing elves from humans and just generally using the word human wrong in this episode and it's driving me crazy. You're all human in this setting! I definitely don't know any Japanese but apparently the direct translations from the manga: quote:Orcs have nicknames for the different races: elves are 'long-ears' (耳長 miminaga?), dwarves are 'depth-dwellers' (地底人 chisokojin?), half-foots are 'midgets' (小人 kobito?) and tall-men are 'long-legs' (足長 ashinaga?). The question of 'what exactly does the term "human" mean in a world with many types of sentient (and non-sentient) humanoid (and non-humanoid) species?' does get brought up several times such as the case with last episode's orcs.

tbf if the tavern massacre was too intense for them they're probably not going to do well with some of the later stuff.

Arc Hammer posted:So whats the deal with the living paintings? I can chalk it up to Laios being a hunger crazed maniac that he didn't notice how the first painting he jumped into did not deposit him within the painting itself but instead in another part of the castle before following the serving maid into the actual painting. The elf who was present in each painting recognized him by the time he appeared at the feast and tried to kill him for it. Maybe the paintings aren't so much paintings as they are paint-based portals into the past and Laios accidentally did a time travel to before the dungeon kingdom was created and sunk into the earth? In the manga its explained that its illusion magic that manifests as a painting, and not actually a monster. Hence why Laios can't actually bring anything back or meaningfully change the painting itself.

To go a bit beyond the sign without treading into manga spoilers, there is obviously something up with an entire magical kingdom getting sucked underground and turned into a dungeon that later a guy who says he's the king crawls out of, tells people to 'kill the wizard', and immediately turns into dust, which also features weird illusions of said kingdom's past. Admin edit: This is literally a spoiler from way down the line in the manga (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

Squidster posted:A good friend has been watching this show with his very gentle six year old, on the impression it was a relatively kid-safe monsters and cooking show. Like a slightly older, more focussed Pokemon with life lessons. Thinking back to this and imagining how this episode would go over. The animation actually amped it up a bit over the manga which wasn't light to begin with.
