Every World Cup has a villain, from Nigel De Jong's Kung Fu attempts to Harald Schumacher's dentistry skills. I thought I'd make a World Cup Villains XI:code:
How do deal with an on-rushing striker: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGq7VcaHoqo Net result: A broken jaw for Batiston and a goal kick Jose Batista - Uruguay Things not do to in a vital final group game #51, get sent off inside a minute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63_AiS0lEQ8 The Scots still went out. Benjamin Massing - Cameroon This is quite possibly the greatest challenge ever made in a World Cup finals match: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeRlJJbtdHc Andy Zaltzman posted:In the dying minutes of their opening match against reigning champions Argentina, as they defended a 1-0 lead, Benjamin Massing executed one of the great World Cup fouls, launching himself at Claudio Caniggia like a combination of an Exocet missile, JPR Williams and a hungry lion taking down an extremely tasty-looking zebra. He missed the ball by approximately 25 yards. Caniggia went into orbit. Boot dislodged, danger averted, mission accomplished. If any football foul has been a work of art, this was it. The referee was so impressed that he showed Massing a red card. And then a yellow card. Suggesting that the foul was worth one-and-a-half sendings off. A conservative estimate. Slaven Bilic - Croatia Missing a World Cup final due to a courageous challenge to avert a goal is one thing, missing it due to a treacherous piece of acting is another. Poor old Laurent Blanc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJa1dvEjBfg&t=44s Antonio Rattin - Argentina https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMKwCQGVCUw&t=276s wikipedia posted:It was in the quarter-final match against the host team that Rattín was sent off by the German referee Rudolf Kreitlein for "violence of the tongue", despite the referee speaking no Spanish. Rattín was so incensed with the decision, believing the referee to be biased in favour of England, that he initially refused to leave. As a way to show his disgust, he sat on the red carpet which was exclusively for the Queen to walk on. He eventually had to be escorted from the field by two policemen and as a final sign of disgust he wrinkled a British pennant before he was escorted out. Nigel De Jong - Netherlands I'm not sure this is quite how you're meant to defend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwqLn0F8jXk Alexandre Villaplane - France Not really a villain on the pitch, but after the World Cup things changed dramatically. quote:These days when we say a footballer went from hero to villain we tend to mean that he scored a goal and then, say, gave away a penalty. So that cliche seems a trifle inadequate when referring to Alex Villaplane, as you'll gather from even the starkest summary of his life: Leonardo - Brazil He may seem mild mannered on the occasions he appears on the Match of the Day sofas, but you've been warned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6NCQApLh4Q Leonel Sanchez - Chile Amazingly he wasn't sent off for this (supposed) knockout punch on Italy's Mario David in the infamous Battle of Santiago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7e0ydoszUI The whole highlights of the game are worth watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOtL1m1o_ok Zinedine Zidane - France As well as that headbutt in 2006, he also got sent off for stamping on a Saudi player in 1998: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ic9vhKeqSE Diego Maradona - Argentina No not for the hand of god goal, but for this wonderful nut shot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izyLoaeJ4QM Manager (joint): Jupp Derwall, Felix Latzke and Georg Schmidt - West Germany & Austria These three chaps took charge of their sides for one of the most infamous games ever, West Germany 1–0 Austria in 1982. quote:After 10 minutes, West Germany took the lead. Thereafter, neither team scored, and few scoring chances were created. Onlookers noted that both teams played as though they were content with the result, giving the impression of them having an unspoken agreement to play for a 1–0 German win. Referee: Clive Thomas - Wales It's the dying moments of Brazil vs Sweden in 1978 and Brazil have won a corner - what do you do? a) Blow for full time before they can take it b) Wait for them to take the corner and the ball to be cleared? c) Neither: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0JFuWqwFg4

Mauro Tassotti elbowed Luis Enrique in 1994, right in the face and made him bleed profusely, and in fact broke his nose. Italy went on to win the match 2-1, and Tassotti wasn't sent off for his actions, nor was Spain awarded a penalty. FIFA retroactively banned Tassotti for 8 matches, which ended his international career. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdm0QBmUfLs They're friends now though: Some of you may remember Daniele De Rossi elbowing Brian McBride right in the face in a very similar manner during the 2006 tournament. De Rossi was sent off and missed most of the tournament but it didn't matter because Italy won the whole thing anyway!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXHCbIBEhc0

Fabio Grosso - Italy Australia make the round of 16 for the first and only time in their history, scores are 0-0 in the 93rd minute, with Australia running harder and looking fitter than the Italians. Australia look like they will be tough to beat in extra time. This happens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fr2oTmQ0GwM Italy win the whole loving thing. Frank Rijkaard Frank Rijkaard spat twice at Rudi Völler during the World Cup game between Holland and Germany at the World Cup 1990 in Italy. Völler got so angry he got sent off by the idiot ref. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zr4YpAPbY2c What a piece of poo poo. At least he got sent off as well and Germany went on to win the World Cup that year.

But then later they reconciled and did a butter commercial together or something so I guess Rijkaard's villain status is questionable. Also, apparently his wife had just left him at the time. Maybe Tante Käthe's hairdo gave him horrible flashbacks.

Speaking of the 2002 World Cup and Korea, referee Byron Moreno deserves a special mention for the Italy-Korea match. Guardian did a proper write up here, and here is a youtube. It's hilarious because it's happening to Italy, but man that is some dodgy refereeing. Also you gotta mention in the OP Maradona getting sent home from the 94 world cup for chomping down on drugs.

Haters Objector posted:Fabio Grosso - Italy Lol, "running harder and looking fitter" First of all, Australia benefited from the most bullshit red card in that World Cup, when an Italian player got sent off for hitting another Italian player and the Australian diving to make it seem like he got hit. Then, Australia, with a man up for an entire half, couldn't even get a couple of shots on goal. They NEVER had a moment where they looked dangerous in the entire match. Meanwhile, Italy, with a man down, had multiple opportunities to score. It was just a matter of time before Italy won, even with a man down. Australia was NEVER going to score on Buffon
