Fixed. As the world's most accurate political simulator, Rulers Of Nations is certainly able to model this.

NORTH KOREA

North Korea is a dictatorship, which has a very special meaning in Rulers of Nations.

By default, you can pass laws with no parliamentary oversight. They still take a week to come into effect, but there's no vote on the laws. Humorously, the game will still tell you if parliament would vote in favor of a given law, even though they never get the chance.

The real-life North Korea does, technically, have an elected assembly (it's called the "Supreme People's Assembly) which officially is the group that chooses the country's leader, but they hardly ever do anything even in a symbolic capacity. Instead, a small subgroup of the body, chosen by Kim himself, meets during their recess (Assembly recesses can last for a decade or more) to write up the laws that the supreme leader has created. And in real life they aren't allowed to write passive aggressive editorials in the newspaper about Kim's laws.

The nation's oldest citizen is freely complaining about how I am running Korea, which is a totally real thing that could happen in North Korea ever. But she can't do anything -- in a week, the gay marriage law will be enacted no matter what anybody does. Deal with it, North Korea!

Let's do some more freedoms:

I guess the "GCP" is in favor of freedom of speech? We're learning so much about North Korean politics!

And everybody hates Huh:

"The Huh problem"

Oh, and did you know that North Korea is 100% Buddhist?

Fun fact: in real life, North Korea is officially atheist and evangelists are subject to imprisonment -- sometimes for life.

By the way, I didn't get around to legalizing a free press or any kind of right to protest. They just went ahead and did all this regardless.

Now, you'll notice my popularity is actually very high. People are happy, they love the Supreme Leader's new policies. I give the people religious freedom, too:

Well, everybody is happy except the government. That's the problem.

North Korea ratifies the Kyoto Protocol, making it more ecologically friendly than the United States. Suck it, OHAMA!

Remember, every other time the player character was ousted, it was accompanied by massive unpopularity -- even the Republican Party waited until Obama hit 0% before they got rid of him. In a totalitarian government, however, other things can happen.

North Korea's powerful Buddhist Lobby chimes in:

But regular people are all in favor of what's going on!

The last straw for the GCP was actually my desire to shut down the one-party system. As soon as I decided on the law, they staged a coup.

And that's why you can't forcibly liberalize a dictatorship. Which is probably pretty realistic, honestly.

But it's still Game Over

North Korea again, this time make it have full socialism. Full rights for everyone. All power to the sovietscouncils. I don't think the game would allow you to do this, because socialism has no leadership to it, so you would have to get rid of all parties and politicians. Which would be a game over, but see how far you can get.

Or free Scotland and Wales and Ireland into 1 glorious Celtic nation of freedom and "gently caress England". :scotland:

I don't have any good set-ups, just a request: Nuke Maine, please. Just so something, anything, happens here. Maybe incorporate it into Canada's rise to power.

You can't really do that because the hardliners in the government will usually have you assassinated, or stage a coup, before you can force them out of power.

I haven't played much RoN lately; I've been pretty busy. Other people are free to write up their experiences with the game, though, assuming they have actually plyed it!

I'm glad to see that the devs of RoN were brave enough to model the truth of North Korea's indomitable juche spirit making any military actions against them the height of imperialist folly.

You bet we have. What an interesting, lovely game.

I'm guessing this is it for the thread, though? You definitely get extra points in that case for finishing off the LP with a liberal North Korea run, out of all things. Wow...
