Yeah, my travels to Japan have been kinda eye-opening in that respect, leaving me like "well, okay" Here's a funny thought: One of my 1st cousins used to HATE Kevin Myers from the American Pie movies, precisely because he felt that "Oh, that jackass worships his older brother. Big loving surprise". But I digress. Something I find weird about Schwarzesmarken and all other Muv-Luv spin-offs outside of the Main series ("Main series" meaning Takeru, Meiya and co / Extra-Unlimited-Alternative): I'm a sucker for world/universe-building, but how come they consistently cock up the one thing that worked for the Main series?

All in all, I think we can call this successfully a better representation for Muv-Luv than Total Eclipse. Not perfect, but neither was Muv-Luv.

yeah the only weird part about this show is that honestly it might have been better served without the doom aliens they're obliterating the world but seem like a tertiary antagonist in this show and honestly they seem weird and out of place even though the franchise revolves around what jerks they are you've got a decently strong story about cold war lingering politics fought with giant robots, and Lise's whole arc was at least a somewhat satisfying way to show how hosed up everything is and to give our hero a big motivation to upend the status quo that ruined his sister and forced him to kill her! but then every so often there's these laser scrotums people make a huge deal about and then they're totally forgotten for another four episodes

As in, on the one hand, the system is terrible. On the other, if it doesn't hold together to some degree, everyone dies. I would honestly not be surprised by some grimdark ending where by taking down the Stasi elite and their fancy Russian mechs, our heroes cripple East Germany's military and let the BETA swarm in and eat everyone. Axmann going 'gently caress it, burn the world' with his massive weapons stockpile may or may not factor into this.

Except that apparently your Engineers are encountering significant difficulties with the advanced design and the stresses it must handle. poo poo. Hire some neutral Swedish Engineering consultants to fix everything. They won't blab. Probably? Ok. The tower is built and inaugurated. A glorious day in East Berlin. The sun decides to poke out from the usual gray sky and illuminate your monument to the commnon man. Wait, why is the light causing a cross shaped aura around the ball? gently caress. Have the Stasi talk with those loving engineers, what did you mean no one expected this?

A generic slice-of-life / harem anime tacked on at the beginning of a PTSD-tastic tale of despair, misery, cute anime ladies, aliens and mechas seems like a recipe for whiplash... and I'm okay with that.

Most anime adaptations aren't about selling the show itself, but about selling more copies of the original manga/LN/VN. It's hard to pitch an adaptation for something that was released a decade ago (unless its as popular as Fate or JJBA).

I think a good Muv Luv TV show might be a pseudo documentarian story that talks about the BETA invasion in it's entirety, starting on Mars, and ending in Japan in 2001 when whatsisface shows up at the beginning of Alternative. But that's probably too dry to ever get actually made

Why can't they just make an anime of the original visual novel instead, it had way more pazang. requiring people to get invested in the characters through the sheer volume of reading about their lighthearted adventures for 20 hours just to give the necessitary gravitas to the tonal gearshift is not something that translates that well to anime imo. the original VN was a pretty interesting ride when there wasn't clipart sliding around on the screen playing a loop of an extremely loud machinegun because of things like the long worldbuilding lessons where we find out nifty detail like hive mechanics and the weird alternate history, or the hilarious rollercoaster of despair that happens at the halfway mark. i guess the general pleasantness of the cast also helped! i dunno if you can make lightning strike twice with this series but god bless their hearts for trying

I just wanted something better than the complete disaster of Eclipse. Lo and behold, they did in fact make a show that cleared my very, very low bar. Good for you, production company.
