maybe he has friends in academia or research positions. R is fine, the repl can be inviting to non programmers but it might not be the best option for learning "programming" in the general (that doesn't matter though). there's a number of good libraries, if he power uses excel and finds graphs, stats and data analysis to be "fun" then sure whatever. usually there's a reason to choose R but learning it for its own sake is fine

You say eh some people don't get legs, some people get all the money in the world, you don't get a dad that gives a gently caress, it doesn't mean you are poo poo. Be the best person you can be and the people who matter will notice, the ones that don't notice don't matter. Kids are resilient and soak up lessons like that if you're compassionate.
