Yes, they won the title last year and are favorities this year as well.

That said, they'll be happy if they get 1 point in the champions league this year. It's going to be difficult.

My baby boy Wesley Moraes is going to score a hattrick in front of the Gelbe Wand and Witsel will make a face.

Also, we have our first trainer to be sacked, Defays has left Mouscron

Here's a bit of a legal 'lol' coming straight from Belgium FA courts:

Before the season, the Pro League (responsible for the Pro League - First Division A - and First Division B) makes an 'indicative penalty table' which basically tells which fouls deserve what penalty (for example, tackling with both feet is three matchdays suspension). Every professional club in football has to agree with this table in order to have it be applicable for the season. The Pro League had sent an email to the Belgian FA courts to say that this was the case for the 2018-19 season.

On Matchday 2, there are three red cards given: Mehdi Carcela (Standard), Wesley Moraes (Club) and Eric Ocansey (Eupen) are suspended for 2, 6 and 4 matchdays respectively. Club and Eupen appeal to try and alleviate the suspension, Standard appeals because of a very interesting reason: it says that it didn't agree with the indicative penalty table, and that the Pro League cannot give proof that the table was agreed on during a Pro League meeting.

Today was the hearing in the appeal and sure enough: Carcela, Wesley and Ocansey are all cleared from their suspension. The only player to be suspended with the current penalty table is Seth De Witte (Mechelen, 1B) because the Mechelen lawyer stated that Mechelen explicitly DID agree with the current table. Vranjes (Anderlecht) was also supposed to have his hearing with the current table, but his hearing was delayed so that Anderlecht didn't need to do the embarrassing thing to get Vranjes unsuspended, which was disagree with a table Pro League chair and also Anderlecht chair Marc Coucke was a part in making.

This probably won't be the end of this though, as Wesley had already done a third of his time (suspensions are automatic, even with an appeal, from 5 matchdays forward) with what is in the end an illegal penalty.

The lol is about to turn into a lmao.
The Pro League doesn't like that those 4 players 'escaped' their punishment and started a procedure to check if there were errors during the 'trial'.
I've also read that other players have been punished based on that indicative table, because there's a council of 3 members of the Pro League that decide on the punishment. Different members apparently have a different interpretation of the rules etc., some say the indicitave table is legal, while others say it's illegal. That's Belgium for you :imunfunny:

The good news is, today there's a meeting where they'll officially recognize the indicative table, hopefully ending this soap.

The most Belgian thing is Mouscron and the Belgian FA setting up a case to just ignore all this bullshit and ask for all the games influenced by the table to be replayed.

Here's the latest illegal table update :siren:

I copy/pasted this from Discord because I'm lazy and belgend's summary is pretty clear imo

belgend on discord posted:

So it turns out legally everything was ok, but noone just bothered to put it in the notules of the Pro League meeting in January
And Standard said "hang on where's this"
But there was no consensus within the Pro League reps at the Belgian FA courts
and it's just basic Blegum
And now the Pro League chair (who is also Anderlecht chair) is mad that Standard and Club got off without a punishment and is trying to revoke everything
While Mouscron and the Belgian FA just started a trial basically saying "all this poo poo is bullshit, replay all games that are influenced by this situation"
So if Mouscron and Belgian FA get a win, we're going to have more games in what's already the most busy league in Europe

Well, turns out this international break isn't as boring as everybody expected!

BBC posted:

Belgian football clubs raided in police inquiry into alleged fraud

Several of Belgium's top football clubs have been raided as part of a police investigation into alleged fraud involving the transfer of players.

Agents, referees and officials from top clubs including Anderlecht, Club Bruges and Standard Liege are being investigated, Belgian media report.

Club Bruges' manager, Ivan Leko, is being questioned, along with prominent Belgian-Iranian agent Mogi Bayat.

More than 200 police officers took part in raids across several countries.

Police also raided properties in France, Luxemburg, Cyprus, Montenegro, Serbia and Macedonia, prosecutors said in a statement.

A number of people now face questioning, the statement said.

The questioning of Mr Leko, whose team Club Bruges are battling to retain their place in the Champions League after losing 3-1 to Atletico Madrid last week, was later confirmed by the club.

It is reported that Mr Bayat was arrested at his home on Wednesday. The agent is reportedly one of the main targets of the inquiry into "financial fraud and money-laundering".

The investigation, which began last year, will focus on "suspicious financial transactions" in Belgian professional football during the 2017-2018 season, according to Belgium's VRT News.

There's a huge investegation (code name "clean hands") about money laundering and match fixing going on right now. Police had raids at like half of the clubs in the Pro League. In total they searched 44 locations in Belgium and 13 abroad, Serbia etc.
Two refereers and ex-Anderlecht coach Herman Van Holsbeeck are also being questionned.

Mogi Bayat, an agent that's involved in almost every transfer in Belgium, is supposedly a central figure in the investigation, together with another agent, Dejan Veljkovic.

So far all we know is that 800k was seized in Serbia and everybody is being questionned. I wonder what will be uncovered and I'm feverishly :f5: news sites.

:siren::siren:Media just reported that everyone that was brought in for questioning today is an actual suspect, and not just a witness:siren::siren:

What the heck is going on.

In short:

  • Kortrijk-Mouscron, the match that would decide who got relegated after 2016-17 is seen as incredibly scummy by relegated club Westerlo, but nothing happens
  • The Belgian federal prosecutor gets a report at the end of 2017 which says that there's several odd transactions happening with agents pocketing some of the money they get and not declaring it to the tax services
  • Mouscron-Eupen, the match that would decide who got relegated after 2017-18 is seen as incredibly scummy by relegated club Mechelen, but nothing happens
  • Mogi Bayat, a football agent that does about 70% of the deals in Belgian football (and seen as scummy because of it), is arrested, which brings to light a big operation by the Belgian government to combat matchfixing and fraud in football
  • Ivan Leko, Club Brugge manager, former client and good friend of agent Dejan Veljkovic, who is also named in the investigation, is arrested
  • Herman Van Holsbeeck, former Anderlecht technical director, is arrested
  • Apart from Club and Anderlecht, there's also searches done at Kortrijk, Standard, Gent, Lokeren, Genk, Oostende, Mechelen
  • 2 top refs are named in the investigation: Delferière and Vertenten
  • The other Pro League clubs or 1B clubs haven't had a search done (yet)
  • 2 journalists linked to Mechelen and Veljkovic are also arrested
  • Jess Thorup becomes the new Gent manager
  • 3 people of the board of directors of Mechelen are also arrested
  • Belgian police confirm that all arrests are suspects in the by now international operation
  • Leko is out of jail but has to pass the district attorney, Van Holsbeeck is free to go. Their lawyers say they're good lads who mean well, and Club is not involved

Welcome to Day 2 of Mogipoli

  • A third journalist was arrested
  • The personal accountant of Lokeren chairman Roger Lambrecht is arrested
  • Several players of Waasland are arrested, Davy Roef and Olivier Myny have to testify
  • Standard chairman Bruno Venanzi was rumored to be arrested, but this was fake news
  • Antwerp confirms it is not involved in the investigation
  • Oostende confirms there were no arrested during the search of Wednesday. The club had two players in Veljkovic's portfolio, and a fight with Bayat over Silvio Proto
  • A third football agent is identified as a suspect: Karim Mejjati
  • It's confirmed that Leko and Club are not involved in the matchfixing case of the investigation
  • One of the journalists, who was the Mechelen and Veljkovic analyst of their paper, is free without condition
  • A press conference from the federal prosecutor says there are three cases in the investigation: a case on tax evasion through several constructions between Veljkovic and Mechelen, Genk, Lokeren, Club and Standard; a case on tax evasion through several constructions Bayat made with Laurent Denis, a former lawyer at Anderlecht; and finally a matchfixing case to prevent the relegation of Mechelen
  • On wednesday the investigators collected 8 million worth of files and gifts from football agents
  • There are European arrest warrants for 2 yet unidentified persons
  • Bayat's constructions were done through licensed agents and companies in England, France and Luxembourg (presumably the English side of the deal would have been done through the Pozzos)
  • Antwerp-Eupen and Mechelen-Waasland of the 2017-18 season were influenced by matchfixing, according to the prosecutors this was due to a conspiracy between Mechelen, Waasland and the referees of those two matches: Delferiere and Vertenten
  • Vertenten agreed to the deal and in return received a better score in the referee rankings of the two biggest sports journals: the sports pages of Het Nieuwsblad and Het Laatste Nieuws
  • Delferiere agreed to the deal in favor and in return received discount on a car and a donation for the school he's the principal of
  • Leko is free without conditions, but is accused of money laundering due to an unidentifiable payment with regards to his wage as OHL manager
  • Standard denies being involved with Veljkovic
  • Vertenten and Delferiere are suspended indefinitely as referees by the Belgian FA, the FA wants to permanently ban them from refereeing
  • Club denies any involvement with Veljkovic
  • The 10th matchday of the First Division B is delayed because of the news with regards to Mechelen
  • Genk denies being involved with Veljkovic
  • Journalist Frank Dekeyser (Het Laatste Nieuws) is free without conditions but accused of participating in a criminal organisation and personal bribery
  • Mechelen denies the matchfixing story
  • Mechelen's board of directors is being pressured by their fans to tell the truth of what happened

Day 3 of Mogipoli

  • Another former football agent linked to Ivan Leko, Dragan Siljanoski, is arrested
  • Davy Roef was only a witness, not a suspect
  • The national organisation of the club ultras is extremely angry about all of this
  • Football agent Walter Mortelmans is released with the condition that he's not allowed contact with the press until January 12
  • Club fans applaud money launderer by saying "at least he's still our money launderer, and Anderlecht is corrupt"
  • Dirk Huyck and Olivier Swolfs are not allowed to have contact with Waasland until January 12. Bit annoying that they're the chairman and chief accountant
  • Olivier Somers, main financer of KV Mechelen and his financial director are still in jail. Mechelen will no longer communicate about the case until monday
  • The Belgian federal government is not amused and wants to abolish the exceptions to the fiscal law for football clubs
  • Marc Coucke wants to kick the clubs out of the Pro League directors board to make the league transparent
  • Club asked their auditor to look for weird constructions and the auditor says everything's A-OK
  • Oh and there's a Red Devils match against the Swiss tonight

Who's being investigated?

  • Mogi Bayat, agent, for criminal organisation and money laundering
  • Laurent Denis, Bayat's lawyer, criminal organisation and money laundering
  • Devan Veljkovic and his wife, agent and wife, criminal organisation, money laundering, and husband also for bribery
  • Karim Mejjati, agent, money laundering
