me when The Club do another win

Ahh, how the world was hyped for the Belgian golden generation to finally take their chance. 2018 was our year, Hazard, KDB and Witsel in their prime. Good young lads like Lukaku, Meunier and Courtois showing we've got a good base to go on for next time, and Kompany, Fellaini and the others of the 2008 Olympic squad giving their last farewell. We all know by the time of making this thread how that ended, and the Best Team in the World Cup that Didn’t Make It To The Final felmed hearts across the beautiful fans of the beautiful game.

It’s a shame that we’re usually subject to the dross in the beer league.

That’s right, it’s the Belgian First Division A aka the Jupiler Pro League. We’ve crunched the numbers and there was only one (1) player here deemed worthy enough by Bobby Martin to warm the bench for people who are actually good at football. Believe it or not, this league according to the facts of the last five seasons is actually the 9th best league in Europe. Either every club here underperforms when not in European competition or all the other leagues are incredibly poo poo. At least our managers are OK I guess. Oh and we’ve got a worse version of VAR.

These are the 16 teams who will make us yearn for international breaks (in the order of their position at the end of the season)

Club Brugge Koninklijke Voetbalvereniging aka blauw-zwart (blue and black) aka Club aka boeren (farmers)
~~ DEFENDING LEAGUE CHAMPION ~~

Nationwide: Club Brugge have become League champion 15 times, their longest streak being three wins from 75-76 to 77-78. They've won the Belgian Cup 11 times, their longest streak being 2 wins from 1994-95 to 95-96. Club have won the Supercup 15 times, 9 times as league champion and 6 times as cup winner, longest streak being four wins from 2002 to 2005. Club Brugge won the very first Supercup against SK Beveren in 1980. They've won the Bruges Matins 19 times (which isn't really an accomplishment when you're always in the finals since 1991). If you wonder where the Bruges Matins are this year, well there was a friendly against the UAE national team and the Supercup that were more important.

International: Club Brugge have had mixed success outside of Belgium.

-Lost the 1976 UEFA Cup final and 1978 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, both against Liverpool.
-Won the 1981 Kirin Cup.

2017-18: Former fan favorite Ivan Leko was picked by the Bruges board to replace Michel Preud’homme, the manager who taught Club how to win trophies again instead of other former fan favorite Philippe Clement, who was groomed to be in charge but left prematurely. An early exit in Europe gave the fans a fright, but after ruining the league before the new year, Club held on to its lead long enough to have Leko win his first title in his first year at the club. Club being infamously bad at winning consecutive titles, they see themselves not as a title favorite, and use this loss of stress to have a European season that isn’t complete trash for once. Leko will get the help of THE fan favorite Timmy ‘den oude’ Simons to complete this task. Will the Currently Best Club in Belgium pull through?

Trainer: Ivan LEKO (CRO)
Main JPL rivals: Anderlecht, Antwerp, Cercle Brugge, Gent

Royal Standard Club de Liège aka Les Rouches (The Reds)
~~ DEFENDING CUP WINNERS ~~

Nationwide: They've been Belgian League champion ten times now, their longest winning streak is three wins, from 68-69 to 70-71. Their last win was the 2008-2009 season. Standard has won the Supercup four times, once as cup winner and three times as league champion. Standard has won the Belgian Cup 8 times, the last time in 2018. They haven't been relegated since 1921, which makes them the team with the most seasons without relegation in Belgium.

International: Liège's biggest accomplishment in Europe was losing 2-1 to Barcelona in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup finals in 1982.

2017-18: Ahh, Standard. After two years of missing out on the play-offs, this year would be their year. Chairman Bruno Venanzi wants to get the Rouches wild again in la Cité ardente, and does this with the most ardent coach of last year: Ricardo Sa Pinto. Completely miss their start, almost lose out of the play-offs again, but then Sa Pinto realized his strength isn’t the tactical playbook, but infusing the chaotic locker room with PASSION and infusing the tepid game with Mehdi Carcela at a time when everyone forgot how to mark Carcela. Almost did a remontada to the title and won the cup in the process. Sa Pinto was thanked by Standard by being told Venanzi has had a deal with Preud’homme to replace him (something Preud’homme tried to stop when Sa Pinto turned out to be ok). Sa Pinto left his mark on Belgian football by diving for a beer that never hit him and having a 25 minute monologue on why Anderlecht are bad. Will probably finish third.

Trainer/technical director/vice-chairman/God Emperor Of Seraing: Michel PREUD’HOMME (BEL)
Main JPL Rivals: Anderlecht, Charleroi
You might have heard of: Luis Pedro Cavanda, Guillermo Ochoa
Founded in 1898

Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht aka Sporting aka mauves et blancs/paarswit (purple and white)

Nationwide: This team is basically the juggernaut of Belgian football, they've been League champion for a whopping 34 times. Their longest streak is five wins from 63-64 to 67-68. They haven't been relegated since 1935. They've won the Belgian Cup 9 times, their longest streak being four wins from 71-72 to 75-76. Anderlecht have won the Supercup 11 times, always as League champion.

Anderlecht are one of the three clubs who won the Belgian League Cup. They won the last edition in 2001. They've won two editions of the Bruges Matins, beating Club Brugge twice.

International: Anderlecht are the most successful Belgian team in Europe, winning:

-The European Cup Winners' Cup twice by beating West Ham United in 1976 and Austria Wien in 1978.
-The UEFA Cup by beating Benfica in 1983.
-The UEFA Supercup twice by beating Bayern Munchen in 1976 and Liverpool in 1978.

2017-18: After barely winning the 2016-17 season with defensive tactics that would make Didier Deschamps blush, it turned out that if the Polish guy on the front didn’t score on the counter Anderlecht were poo poo. Loaned out another striker who would turn out to be the golden boot this season. They had their worst opening of the season ever and to top it all off they got sussed out by a team with Dedryck Boyata in defense. René Weiler said that the team was poo poo in front of a vending machine and got fired for it. Former fan favorite Nicolas Frutos proved he was a poo poo manager and Anderlecht board darling Hein Vanhaezebrouck got the job right as they announced they were selling the club. Hmmm. New manager and most annoying billionaire of Belgium Marc Coucke immediately made it clear their were no funds for transfers, and so two Gent rejects and a crippled Lazar Markovic took Anderlecht to not so dazzling heights. Will they win number 35 this year?

Trainer: Hein VANHAEZEBROUCK (BEL)
Main JPL rivals: Club Brugge, Standard
You might have heard of: Andy Najar, Luckasz Teodorczyk
Founded in 1908

Koninklijke Atletiek Associatie Gent aka The Buffalos

Nationwide: AA Gent have been relegated a few times and are a four time Second Division champion, as well as Second Division Final Round Champion in 1989. After 1989, Gent haven't been relegated. Gent have won the Belgian cup three times and won the Supercup as cup winner in 1984. They won their very first championship in 2015!

International: AA Gent's biggest accomplishment in Europe is being a runner-up twice in the Intertoto Cup. Did decent last 2 season in Champions League and later Europa league. Decent = still in the competition after the winter break.

2017-18: Whatever happened to the Gent team that got out of the Champions League group stages and beat Spurs the year after in the Europa League? Knocked out by some Austrian farmers in Europe, somehow having a worse start than Anderlecht and in the relegation zone at New Year’s until some players in the team remembered they were good at football and Yves Vanderhaeghe showed he learned a lot of good things from Hein Vanhaezebrouck while realizing where Hein did wrong. Will want to win the cup this year probably.

Koninklijke Racing Club Genk

They won the Belgian League three times and the Belgian Cup four times. They have won the Supercup once in 2011 as league champion. They've also won the Second Division once, the Final Round twice and haven't been relegated since 1996.

2017-18: Typical recent Genk season: they do bad the first half, fire their trainer, get one that does marginally better, eek into the play-offs and then get points from Club. Will probably do the same this year even though their squad should always play top 3.

Trainer: Philippe CLEMENT (BEL)
Main JPL rivals: STVV
You might have heard of: Alejandro Pozuelo, Danny Vukovic
Founded in 1988 after fusing THOR Waterschei and KFC Winterslag

Royale Sporting du Pays de Charleroi aka the Zebras

They've been second division champions twice, the last time was in 2012

2017-18: Charleroi shows it has the best scouting department of the country by again heading into the play-offs as half of their team gets bought by the big clubs. Were 2nd for most of the season but realised they are supposed to collapse at the end of the season. Will do the same this year.

Trainer: Felice MAZZU (BEL)
Main JPL rivals: Standard
You might have heard of: Nicolas Penneteau, Jérémy Perbet
Founded in 1904

Koninklijke Voetbalclub Kortrijk aka De Kerels (The Dudes)

Won the Final Round three times and the Second Division twice, haven't been relegated since 2007.

2017-18: That manager without a degree got replaced by a Greek guy who was really bad at his job and almost had the club relegated. Professional savior of clubs in trouble Glen De Boeck saved the club and led it with the help of Jérémy Perbet (Perbut for his mates) to a midtable finish. Again. Kortrijk are the most boring team. De Boeck might not have many fans in the club though after saying the team he got now is poo poo, but he’s right.

Trainer: Glen DE BOECK (BEL)
Main JPL rivals: Waregem

Royal Antwerp Football Club aka The Great Old

The oldest professional footbal club in Belgium, and they’ve actually done stuff. Not recently of course, after all, the last 15 years most of that time was spent in the lower divisions for being complete shite. They’ve won the title 4 times, the last time in 1957! Won the Second Division twice, last time being 2017 and won two Belgian cups, the last one in 1992 which got them to the final of the Cup Winners’ Cup in WEMBERLEY which is the last European final so far of a Belgian club.

2017-18: Laszlo Boloni’s hoofball kept them up, but that’s all it did. Now they have to play in a competition that’s hopefully learned how to counter hoofball and kicking players in the shins. Bölöni is clearly doing this for shits and giggles and has proceded to interview other coaches on how they countered his hoofball.

Trainer: Laszlo BÖLÖNI (ROM)
Main JPL rivals: Club Brugge

Sportvereniging Zulte Waregem aka Essevee

Nationwide: They were Second Division champion in 2005, haven't left the Pro League since and won the Belgian Cup in 2006.

International: Waregem's biggest accomplishment in Europe was losing to Newcastle in the 3rd round of the UEFA cup.

2017-18: Had a real bad start but then had ten good games at the end of the season and almost won European football. Will probably do the same this year. Props for staying the course with Dury during their hard times.

Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging aka STVV

They won a trophy that doesn't exist anymore in 1999. Best known for being the only club in Belgium with astroturf.

2017-18: Started the ‘Hey maybe Belgian managers aren’t so bad’ bandwagon for the little clubs. Got a Spanish coach that couldn’t speak English and fired him the day after, then got an up and coming Belgian youngster who did not do well enough (read: top half finish, which was ludicrous to think) and fired him too. Got bought up by some Japanese hedge fund. Midtable

Koninklijke Voetbalclub Oostende aka de Kustboys (the Boys from the Coast)

KV Oostende are the closest team to you if you're from across the pond or across the bigger pond. If you want to look the least plastic this club is for you. They had a real good season in the second division, and since promotion have won one (1) Belgian Cup.

2017-18: The club started so abysmally the owner up until then hosed off and bought Anderlecht, but not before giving it to someone who might be a strawman. Hmmm, stayed up despite their manager being a bit poo poo, so they hosed them off and got three lads from Club Brugge to save the club in what hopefully with Broos/Verheyen/Vander Elst won’t have the same implications the Degryse/Ceulemans/Vander Elst trio had in Bruges (the implications were they changed manager 4 times that year and turned really bad for a year of 5).

Koninklijke Voetbalclub Red Star Waasland-Sportkring Beveren aka de Wase Wolven (the Wolves of the Waasland)

SK Beveren had a few titles and a supercup or two I'm pretty sure. Sadly this club has Waasland's honours and not Beveren's so apart from winning the Second Division final round in 2013 they've done gently caress all!!

2017-18: Hope to not get relegated that would ruin us, let’s tap up that frustrated assistant-manager at Club. Wow we’re almost in the play-off, oh a bigger club got our coach. Ooh let’s get the U21 coach at Club. Oh gently caress he’s poo poo, let’s get the manager who got fired from all his other jobs for being too mad at everything now.

Trainer: Yannick FERRERA (BEL)
Main JPL rivals: Lokeren
You might’ve heard of: Oscar Threlkeld, Aleksander Boljevic
Founded in 2010 as the result of a horrible marriage between SK Beveren and KV Red Star Waasland

Koninklijke Sporting Club Lokeren Oost-Vlaanderen aka Tricolores aka Lokerse boeren (farmers of Lokeren)

They won the Belgian Cup, their very first trophy, in 2011 and repeated this feat in 2014. They were also the Second Division champion in 1996 and haven't been relegated since.

2017-18: Were just loving poo poo and not notable. Worse home record than away. Chairman wants to sell the club before he dies. Wreck

Trainer: Peter MAES (BEL)
Main JPL rivals: Gent, Waasland-Beveren
You might have heard of: Steve De Ridder, Ari Freyr Skulason

Royal Excel Mouscron aka whatever

At one point during the 90s, they found themselves in the fourth provincial division. However, in the last few seasons Mouscron has shot up the ranks, going from fourth to third division in 2011, from third to second in 2012 and now finally to first division in 2014 after winning the second division final round.

2017-18: Another season just barely staying up. What weird deals or black magic do they have in Mouscron?

Founded in 1921 as Racing Club Péruwelz, fusion with Mouscron in 2010

Königliche Allgemeine Sportvereinigung Eupen aka De Panda's

What was five years ago a quaint club with a weird moon language became a feeder club for a Qatari scam enhancement academy for promising footballers.

2017-18: Managed to once again play like a really good Europa League one day and play like a total shitshow the next. Stayed up because of a 4 goal remontada against Mouscron, letting Mechelen get relegated. Surely this time they’ll be relegated.

Trainer: Claude MAKELELE (Yes! That Claude Makelélé)
Main JPL rivals: competent strikers

Cercle Brugge Koninklijke Sportvereniging aka Groen-Zwart (green and black)

After a three year absence from the Pro League the other Bruges club football association is back. This time they’ve got Monaco cash to prep them up and keep them up, as they’ve become a feeder for the French juggernaut. Monaco say keeping Cercle up is a priority but they still throw more money at Falcao than the squad’s worth.

loving playoffs, how do they work?

They don't, but here it is:
- 1 to 6 play against each other in one group with their points halved, top spot becomes champion, fourth (or fifth) spot plays against the winner of:

- 7 to 15 of the First Division A and 2 to 4 from First Division B play against each other in two groups starting from zero, top spots play against each other, winner goes against aforementioned fourth (or fifth)

I hear you ask, why get teams in from the second division? Why not the champions? Huh??? I answer to you that we don't loving know either

You're early.
Good op (at least the stuff I've read). Maybe add that Gent literally had a player in the final of the 2018 Fifa World Cup™ :smuggo:

No but seriously, I have no idea what to expect about this season. I expected several players to leave (Simon, Kalu, Kalinic) and so far they haven't? But they probably will, question is when? And we sold all our defenders? And we bought some scrubs? :iiam:
I expect a ton more transfer acitivity in the coming weeks.
And of course I'm hoping we start the season a lot better than last year.

me when The Club do another win

The first match of the 2018-19 season is starting in half an hour. It's the Belgian Supercup and it's the defending champion Club Brugge goes up against the cup winner Standard Liège in Bruges. This game is extra exciting because Club coach Ivan Leko's predecessor, Standard coach Michel Preud'homme, is coming back to Bruges for the first time since his departure at the end of the 2016-17 season. He won 1 cup and 1 league title with Club during his period there. Preud'homme is also the coach that gave Standard its first title in 25 years in 2008.

These are the starting line-ups:

https://twitter.com/ClubBrugge/status/1021079236663304198

3 new transfers in the starting XI already with Letica, Rits and Danjuma. Mitrovic was already on loan from Besiktas last season but only came back on Wednesday when Club bought him outright. Star players Vanaken and Vormer are at the ready, but their trusty midfield colleague Marvelous Nakamba and their regular sweeper CB Brandon Mechele are injured.

https://twitter.com/Standard_RSCL/status/1021080581591924736

The only new transfers starting with Standard are players that were only loaned last season and now bought outright: Laifis, Bastien and Cavanda. Star player Mehdi Carcela (also bought outright after being loaned last season) decided to just not show up after the World Cup, and no one really knows where he is. This line-up however is pretty much the line-up that bossed the Play-offs last season.

e: This game has ended in a 2-1 win for Club Brugge (2-0 at HT)

We played the second half with a whole different team, Dompé looked very promising. Hope he can keep his head with the game this season.

me when The Club do another win

Seeing as there's not been a whole lot of news just yet and the next match is only on Thursday, here's some new rules that's in the Pro League starting this season

  • The VAR screen on pitch will be fenced. Only referees are allowed in the VAR-zone. Players, trainers or other staff in the zone can be ejected from the match.
  • Players calling for VAR can get a yellow card
  • The bench staff can communicate only for tactical or medical reasons. Convincing referees is forbidden. This is also the case during a VAR-intervention
  • The VAR can intervene on a violent play, like an elbow or headbutt, even if play has already resumed
  • A game where the VAR malfunctions must be delayed for 30 minutes, after 30 minutes the game is played without VAR
  • Linesman are recommended to only wave their flag at a clear offside situation. In doubt play continues, so the outcome is known. VAR can intervene in case of a goal. The VAR cannot intervene if the linesman waves his flag AND the head referee stops play
  • A player who leaves the pitch to fix a practical problem can only re-enter the pitch with permission of the refereeing staff. For example, after changing shoes. Play is stopped and resumed by a free kick at the spot the player has re-entered the field. Within the box play is resumed by a penalty for the opposing team.
  • Referees must play advantage, even if it's preceded by a foul that warrants a card. If another foul is made during continued play, a card can still be handed to the first fouler. Two players can get a yellow or red card after the same play, or the same player can get two yellow cards if he made both fouls.
  • Acrobatic throw-ins are banned
  • Starting from the 1/16th finals, clubs in the Cup may use a 4th substitution in extra time.

That first rule seems weird? Like, was it really that big of a problem that players changed shoes or whatever that they have to give free kicks for that?
And boo at the second thing.

I don't remember it happening that much either, except during like set pieces but only once or twice? Belgian galaxy brain Hein Vanhaezebrouck called it the most important rule change of the season though so it's probably just some bullshit they think is important in Anderlecht.

Speaking of bullshit that is actually important, Genk start their Eurofoot campaign tomorrow against Fola Esch... and, hell, time to make this thread Fola Esch

Cercle sportif Fola Esch

Fola Esch are the oldest club of Luxembourg and the Luxemburgish member of the Club of Pioneers, which is apparently a thing. Old football clubs getting along in an old club home, waiting to get put behind a shed and shot. They were the biggest club of Luxembourg until other, less poo poo clubs arrived like Dudelange, Differdange and Jeunesse Esch. Their last championship win, number 7, was in the 2014-15 season, and they haven't won the Luxembourg cup in over 60 years, their third win in 1954-55 being their last. In Europe they've mostly hung around in the early rounds of Eurofoot.

2017-18: 3rd with a 14-5-7 season finishing 21 points behind champion Dudelange, 3rd round of the Luxembourg cup, lost in the 3rd qualifying round of the EL (their best Eurofoot result yet).

The first actual game of the season is starting in less than an hour, Standard opens up the 2018-19 season with a match in Liège against Gent. Gent will want to take a better start than last season, but Sclessin is one of those stadiums where the home team advantage is still absolutely at play in Belgium.

Let's take a look at the teams:

https://twitter.com/Standard_RSCL/status/1022896785008803841

4 changes from the team in the Supercup: Ochoa is back from holiday and the substitutes in the Supercup take their spot in the starting XI: Fai replaces an injured Pocognoli, Djenepo and Marin replace Edmilson who left to play in Qatar and Duje Cop. Carcela is not yet match fit.

https://twitter.com/KAAGent/status/1022898739202203651

This is Gent's first official match of the season, and they've already got 4 new transfers in the starting XI: former youth product and Club Brugge player Vadis Odjidja, former Standard winger Dompé, former Mechelen keeper Coosemans and Igor Plastun from Lodogorets.

Standard-Gent are usually always interesting games, as the resident Buffalo of the forums has already stated, Vanderhaeghe is really mad at this ref for a wrong decision he made last season. Now all matches have VAR this will definitely not happen again. This made it the match we're doing a post for this matchday and makes it my Match of the Week for Neutrals

This match isn't on free TV, so get out your hesgoal or firstrow streams and enjoy the Belgian commentary tracks.

What’s the gossip in Belgium concerning Ochoa?

Napoli and a handful of other clubs were rumored to be interested in him after the World Cup but those have all seemingly fizzled out.

Is the expectation that he’ll finish out his final year with Standard Liege and then go out on a free?

Is his club placing more importance on potentially winning the league title (with Ochoa in the net) over making money off an early transfer?

I don't really know. We've had Chakvetadze for a couple of years now, he's good. Hope to see him play a ton this season.
Then last year we bought Yaremchuk, it was intended that he'd be the backup striker, but he started most of the games and scored goals, so we like him too.
And then this transfer window we bought Beridze and some other guy I think? Don't really know much about them.

But Gent has always been a team that buys and sells a ton of players, it's annoying actually. We buy like 5 players in January and then we sell them 6 months later. Rinse and repeat next season. So I guess it's just a scout in the region that's like: here are players. And the board is: ok, here is money .

It's been pretty quiet on Ochoa, I think it will depend on if Standard are still in the CL come mid-August. Standard have definitely bought to play for the title though.

I haven't watched the game but I heard it was a good one, one for the neutrals I say. Standard won 3-2 (but with apparently a dubious penalty~~~)

The season has officially kicked off, let's take a look at what happened

Standard 3-2 Gent (1-1)
Kortrijk 1-4 Anderlecht (0-2)
STVV 0-0 Cercle
Waregem 2-2 Waasland (1-0)
Oostende 2-1 Mouscron (0-1)
Club 5-2 Eupen (3-0)
Charleroi 0-1 Antwerp (0-1)
Lokeren 0-4 Genk (0-2)

No real upsets apart from maybe Antwerp winning at Charleroi. Kortrijk, Lokeren and Eupen have shown they are probably the three most likely relegation candidates, and the big 5 have shown they're all more than ready for the current season even if Gent barely lost.

What's happening next week?

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 1

Esch - Genk

FRIDAY AUGUST 3

Waasland - Standard

SATURDAY AUGUST 4

Eupen - Charleroi
Cercle - Lokeren
Antwerp - Kortrijk
Gent - Waregem

SUNDAY AUGUST 5

Anderlecht - Oostende
Genk - STVV
Mouscron - Club

Not that many really interesting games next week (this will be a trend), the Limburg derby is my Match for Neutrals to Watch.

me when The Club do another win

Wow, three Belgian clubs will be going on in Eurofoot next week. But whooo are their opponents???

Champions League League Path 3rd Round qualifiers: Standard v Ajax

Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax aka de Godenzonen (Sons of God) aka de Joden (the Jews) aka I Lancieri (The Lancers) aka Lucky Ajax

If you haven't heard of Ajax yet, chances are you've either just heard of football or are literally a baby. If so, goo goo gah gah and welcome to football! Ajax used to one of the best teams in the world with players like Johan Cruijff, Fat Ronaldo Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wesley Sonck. They've won titles almost everywhere, but mostly in the Netherlands. They're the biggest club of the Netherlands and also really annoying, like Anderlecht.

They have won 33 Ereidivisie titles, 18 Dutch Cups, 8 Dutch Supercups, 4 Europacup 1 titles, 1 Cup Winners Cup, 1 UEFA Cup, 2 UEFA Supercups, 2 Intercontinental Cups, The Rangers Centenary Cup and a Karl Rappan Cup (whatever that is). Here is a wiki article of literally all the stuff they've won: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AFC_Ajax_honours

2017-18: Wow, last year loving sucked for Ajax. They couldn't get in the group stages of European football, they were runners-up in the Eredivisie for the fourth time in a row and they got ousted out of the Dutch Cup in their third match. A far cry from the good old days.

Trainer: Erik TEN HAG (NED)
Main league rivals: Feyenoord, PSV
You might have heard of: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Daley Blind

UEFA Ranking: 29 (v Standard's 84)
Current Eurofoot parcours: Beat Sturm Graz in the 2nd Qualifier Round of the CL
Against Belgian opposition: Currently 9-3-4 against Belgian teams. Most recently playing Standard in the 2016-17 EL Group Stage: 1-0 win in Amsterdam, 1-1 tie in Liège

Europa League 3rd Qualifying Round: Jagiellonia v Gent

Jagiellonia Białystok Sportowa Spółka Akcyjna aka Jaga

Jagiellonia are a bunch of former monarchist soldiers that made a football team in the 1920s. Two Bialystok clubs refounded the team in the 1950s after the Soviets said they didn't want any 'White' clubs in their leagues. They haven't been relegated since 2007, but have been a bit corrupt since and had to have points docked. They have won one (1) Polish Cup and one Polish Supercup, and that's it.

2017-18: They had almost won the Ekstraklasa, being only three points short of Legia Warsaw, the best season of the club's history. However, in Eurofoot some Azeris beat them in the second qualifier round of the Europa League and they lost their first cup match of the season.

Trainer: Ireneusz MAMROT (POL)
Main league rivals: the Polish FA
You might have heard of: Arvydas Novikovas, Dejan Lazarevic

UEFA Ranking: 235 (v Gent's 44)
Current Eurofoot parcours: They have beaten Rio Ave 5-4 on aggregate in the second qualifier round of the EL
Against Belgian opposition: this is their first match against a Belgian team

Europa League 3rd Qualifying Round: Lech Poznan v Genk

Kolejowy Klub Sportowy Lech Poznań, S.A. aka Kolejorz (The Railwaymen)

We're staying in the Ekstraklasa today, going from Bialystok to Poznan. Lech were part of the very first Ekstraklasa season, but only because they asked nicely. Their golden age consists of being able to draw 1-1 with Cruijff's Barcelona, and not a whole lot more. However, they've won a bit more trophies than Jagiellonia. They've been Polish champions 7 times, won 5 Polish cups and 6 Polish supercups.

2017-18: Ended 3rd in the Ekstraklasa, 10 points off Legia after being top of the league in the regular season, which is a bit embarrassing. Even more embarassing, however, was losing their first cup match of the season. They had a pretty good run in Eurofoot, only getting ousted by Utrecht because of the away goal rule.

Trainer: Ivan DURDEVIC (SRB)
Main league rivals: Legia Warsaw
You might have heard of: Thomas Rogne, Nikola Vujadinovic

UEFA Ranking: 128 (v Genk's 71)
Current Eurofoot parcours: they have beaten two opponents already: Gandzasar Kapan of Armenia and Shakthar Soligorsk from Belarus.
Against Belgian opposition: they are currently 1-0-1 against Belgian teams, most recently losing to Club Brugge in a penalty shootout in the 2009-2010 EL Playoff Round

Yeah, I doubt very much that they'll keep this up but they clearly have tons of potential and it seems likely they'll be able to sell some Belgian youngsters for millions again in a few years.

Speaking of which, any news about what will happen with Dendoncker, Kums, Theo and all those other players they played last year?

Dendoncker allegedly refused a €19m move to Marseille because of it being a shady TPO deal in disguise, and this has angered Coucke and might gently caress up the Anderlecht budget (which is epic win imo), it's been really quiet about Kums afaik, and Teo actually wants to stay now (lmao). Thelin was loaned out to Leverkusen and I hope he outscores the mauve attackers once again.

And here are some fun facts about the Eurofoot opposition

Europa League Playoff Round: Gent v Bordeaux

Football Club des Girondins de Bordeaux aka Les Girondins aka Le club au scapulaire (The Club with the Chevron) aka Les marine et blancs (The Navy-and-Whites)

If you haven't heard of Bourdeaux yet, chances are you've either just heard of football or are literally a baby. If so, goo goo gah gah and welcome to football! Bordeaux used to be very good in France, now they're only relatively ok compared to the moneysham the top of the Ligue 1 has become.

They have won 6 Ligue 1 titles, 4 French Cups, 3 French League Cups and 3 French Supercups and were joint winner of 1 Intertoto Cup

2017-18: Bordeaux last year were, how you say, le merde. They finished 6th, 38 points behind champion PSG, and it is only because they won one game more than Saint-Etienne that they got into Eurofoot this year, they got wrecked by a 4th division team in their first cup match of the season and lost their first league cup match of the season as well against archrival Toulouse. They also lost their first Eurofoot matchup of the season to Videoton. And that was with Malcom

Trainer: Gus POYET (URU)
Main league rivals: Toulouse, Nantes
You might have heard of: Former JPL ok-players Samuel Kalu and Lukas Lerager

UEFA Ranking: 114 (v Gent's 44)
Current Eurofoot parcours: Beat Ventspils and Mariupol in the 2nd and 3rd Qualifier Rounds of the Europa League
Against Belgian opposition: Currently 7-3-2 against Belge opposition, the last time giving Club Brugge a good trashing in the 2012-13 EL Group Stages

Europa League Playoff Round: Genk v Brondby

Brøndbyernes Idrætsforening aka Drengene Fra Vestegnen (The Boys from the Western outskirts)

Brondby is the old money in Danish football, long before you were born and Copenhagen was founded, Brondby wrecked the *checks wiki* 60s equivalent of the Alka Superliga. This has since ended, but that doesn't mean they're no longer a contender in Denmark. Then again, what does that mean in the football of today, where's Laudrup? Where's Laudrup? WHERE'S LAUDRUP? They've won 10 Danish titles, 7 Danish Cups, 2 Danish League Cups, 4 Danish Supercup and one time they were the best Scandi club in the world.

2017-18: They had almost won the Superliga, finally, another chance at a title. It had been so long... but two matches before the league ended they collapsed and Midtyjlland won with a 4 point lead. They did however manage to win the Danish cup. They failed to qualify for the Europa League group stages after Hajduk Split beat them in Split

Trainer: Alexander ZORNIGER (GER)
Main league rivals: Copenhagen
You might have heard of: Lasse Vigen Christensen, Dominik Kaiser

UEFA Ranking: 140 (v Genk's 69 (nice))
Current Eurofoot parcours: Beat Spartak Subotica in the 3rd qualifier round of this competition
Against Belgian opposition: Currently 1-0-3 against Club Brugge, their only Belgian opposition thus far. Club trashed Brondby in the qualifiers of the 2014-15 Europa League

I have no idea what to expect from the Bordeaux game to be honest. They're in some sort of mini crisis, so that's good for us.
But we have been playing poorly so far too. Like there's no real system, we've sold/loaned out some of our more creative players, defense is shaky, I don't know why Yaremchuk is playing on the wing etc...
Last night, we struggled against Eupen. We just lean back and let them have the ball and we just create so little. It's frustrating.
If it wasn't for that penalty (that was a very light call imo, I mean, only today I found out that we were awarded the penalty for pulling on a shirt instead of a handball) we would have drawn against Eupen. Eupen for fucks sake.

Ah well, I guess we'll see on Thursday.

EDIT: Oh lol Bordeaux fired their coach. I had only read that he went on a huge rant and was mad at the chairman.

Here's a bit of a legal 'lol' coming straight from Belgium FA courts:

Before the season, the Pro League (responsible for the Pro League - First Division A - and First Division B) makes an 'indicative penalty table' which basically tells which fouls deserve what penalty (for example, tackling with both feet is three matchdays suspension). Every professional club in football has to agree with this table in order to have it be applicable for the season. The Pro League had sent an email to the Belgian FA courts to say that this was the case for the 2018-19 season.

On Matchday 2, there are three red cards given: Mehdi Carcela (Standard), Wesley Moraes (Club) and Eric Ocansey (Eupen) are suspended for 2, 6 and 4 matchdays respectively. Club and Eupen appeal to try and alleviate the suspension, Standard appeals because of a very interesting reason: it says that it didn't agree with the indicative penalty table, and that the Pro League cannot give proof that the table was agreed on during a Pro League meeting.

Today was the hearing in the appeal and sure enough: Carcela, Wesley and Ocansey are all cleared from their suspension. The only player to be suspended with the current penalty table is Seth De Witte (Mechelen, 1B) because the Mechelen lawyer stated that Mechelen explicitly DID agree with the current table. Vranjes (Anderlecht) was also supposed to have his hearing with the current table, but his hearing was delayed so that Anderlecht didn't need to do the embarrassing thing to get Vranjes unsuspended, which was disagree with a table Pro League chair and also Anderlecht chair Marc Coucke was a part in making.

This probably won't be the end of this though, as Wesley had already done a third of his time (suspensions are automatic, even with an appeal, from 5 matchdays forward) with what is in the end an illegal penalty.

if Club complain about this they're even more bitchmade than I thought. Wesley literally elbowed someone in the face, it was the second (or maybe third?) time he did that in the last 2 seasons. I even find it appalling that they appealed the suspension in the first place. It'd have sent a message that as a club they can't accept such aggressive behavior on a pitch. But I guess modern football (and probably the whole world) is too cynical for things like that.

I feel like you can't use the full punishment for recidivism if it was 2 times in the 16-17 season and now one time. Then again, Club got what they were going for by having a smaller ban for Wesley but now it just feels like it's a roulette whether you actually get punished or not. Club got punished, Standard and Eupen didn't, Mechelen chose to be punished and the Vranjes case got delayed to Monday because ????

Yes, they won the title last year and are favorities this year as well.

That said, they'll be happy if they get 1 point in the champions league this year. It's going to be difficult.
