I was hoping The Running Man intro used that font, as it's a perfect "it's the '80's and everything is gone to poo poo because computers" font, but alas the film used something more readable. Only two months until a tornado pisses off college basketball fans!

I'm watching the Portland, OR governor press conference on the upcoming lockdown rules. NOT "shelter in place." That nomenclature because that means seek shelter where you are immediately for a short duration, and it's specific emergency broadcast language. They want to make sure that gets communicated if an ACTUAL shelter in place situation happens. As someone from nuke country, I was wondering why they were using that phrase and then saying, "But totes go get groceries and stuff," but I didn't know for sure so I just shrugged and moved on. Way to go, California.

I haven't seen so much as a single alert yet, and I know it works on mine because I was in the office the day they ran the test that blew up everyone's phones simultaneously. Speaking of radio, AM sports talk radio is amazingly surreal right now. They don't really have anything to talk about. My new car takes a few seconds to connect to my phone, and disconnects it after I turn off the engine, but keeps playing whatever the last audio source was, so I started leaving it on the AM station for the Blazers cuz it's less offensive to me than lovely music. Only now it's like...dudes randomly talking about toilet paper availability in their suburb, or what their kids were doing while stuck at home, or why they're mad a specific bar is shut down cuz they had the best totchos... If I wrote a movie script about this stupidity we're experiencing, the Greek Chorus would be AM sports radio.

The only reason I can think of them calling it "shelter in place" is the population density of San Fransisco is such that you can't keep 6 feet of distance. It falls apart fast when you think about it, especially as it now encompasses all of California. Unless someone needs to close the bridges and tunnels in twenty minutes, or Jesus comes back and can't figure out how to call someone, EAS is going to be on the sidelines.

Two different Youtubers have gone around collecting compilation videos, some are repeats or redundant: This guy has four parts with commentary and fake ones: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_Wp_ntbOJQ If you're just looking for the real stuff, this account has two parts and little filler: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjBnDsTOGug I've never seen Russia's or New Zealand's, but they both seem to fit with the tired Soviet Siren and the funky tones from the Kiwis.

I wish the DNC iwillvote.com would share their commercials online; they start out with a big red text ATTENTION accompanied by pleasing tones, then it tells you how to use a mail-in ballot. I hope this is as close as we get to an EAS activation. Germany did "Warntag" which was a national testing at 11:00 local time back in september: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mztwcGXV5qU YouTube user Mr. Nick managed to pick up Coronavirus updates over his EAS equipment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnRTvuuD6KI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVPrKBxqdsU Nothing riot related that I've seen with a cursory glance online.

Well, this is a legitimately fun thread to stumble across given I read about EBS/EAS a few weeks ago. I like how all of Japan's emergency warnings sound like a subway train is approaching and you need to stand clear of the platform.Fuckstick posted:Also now with phone alerts, being in a public place when 200 phones all start blasting that tone is one of the creepiest experiences there is. In the leadup to Hurricane Irma, I was at a Walmart in Daytona Beach when Hurricane Warnings were issued; every drat cell phone going off with the EAS tone at the same time was a pretty apocalyptic feeling. iospace posted:Let's see how many fuckheads whine in Dayton and Columbus tonight. The one thing about EAS is the fact that when it goes off, there are very few things like it. You KNOW what that sound is, and it will always grab your attention.

I forget where I read it, but someone deliberately put those two tones together for their irritating and conflicting qualities; the steep fines (and the ubiquitous testing) help separate it out from the rest of the noises. Some primary sources from today, I guess Phillip doesn't rank RATS activation (or they finally snuffed the snuff alert system): https://twitter.com/MarkHolt4/status/1380489633797177350 BBC1 is reminiscent of any other broadcast channel who has to break in, but that poor BBC World Service anchor who knew but couldn't spill the beans: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_LOjGELeDY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MHSrzLY240

Since this thread has been necromanced (I didn't know it existed), I'll put it my two cents. I love int the Chicago suburbs and the other day we had a couple tornadoes. My phone and mom's phone made the BRRRRRRRRRRRRT sound and said there was a tornado warning and to seek shelter. And about 5 seconds later the sirens were blaring and I shuffled mom into the bathroom. Then I opened the front door to look outside. Heavy rain, some wind, no hail. A few minutes later the sirens stopped. Turns out the tornadoes were a couple towns over. Bullet dodged. Also I do have another story. I used to work 4-midnight about 40 minutes from my house. So I was listening to the radio and all of a sudden I hear the EAS tones. And I thought, "This is it. Trump launched the nukes." Then they play the "this is only a test" message. Motherfuckers, you're supposed to announce it's a test before the death buzzer. Also, I don't know how other states do it, but illinois has 2 sirens: alert and attack. Alert is natural disaster (tornado, chemical spill, nuclear reactor explodes, etc) and attack is just like it says. The Ruskies are coming. https://www2.illinois.gov/ready/plan/Pages/Sirens.aspx Also, the test the sirens at 10 AM on the first Tuesday of the month. I always wondered why. A random date? Least likely time for a tornado? What happens if there's a tornado at that exact time?

When I was younger I used to visit family at the shore that had a small house right up against the water - like, step off the back porch onto the beach and the water is 20ft away at high tide. I remember one night there were pretty bad storms in the area and I distinctly remembered hearing alert tones along the beach and someone speaking over a PA system about possible dangerous storm surges and flash floods in the area. Never heard anything like it since then. It was pretty eerie to hear it in the dead of night like that, too.

I remember when my family moved from one side of Bolingbrook to the other. It was the day of the Plainfield tornado. I was scared shitless. We spent the dah under the stairs in the basement. Dad's logic was: there are no appliances or anything heavy above the stairs. His reasoning was sound. The only thing directly above the stairs was... More stairs. But still, hearing blaring sirens, torrential rain, hail, and being 8 years old scared the gently caress out of me. And there are still no known photos or videos of the thing. Way to make a homecoming. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990_Plainfield_tornado Ninja edit: it was day, not night. Remembering something from nearly 31 years ago is hard.
