October 19th, 1942 - Day 3, Part 2

The story so far:

As a new series of turns begins, a German squad self-rallies with a heat of battle, and even have a leader rise up through the ranks, receiving a battlefield commission. A couple of other German units rally, and a MMG turns out to have malfunctioned so badly it broke during a repair attempt. A Commissar regains his senses and manages to rally his subordinates. Artillery falls on the Assembly Hall, but no results are achieved, an ongoing problem for the Germans. Tracers fly across the street dividing the Assembly Hall and its adjacent factories (such as the Foundry Hall) as both sides attempt to dislodge their opponent, but the thick factory walls prevent any significant damage from occurring. In the South, having accomplished its goal of destroying German vehicles, the AT gun in D34 breaks down from intensive fire, leaving the crew vulnerable to the advancing German infantry.

Almost a dozen squads make their way to the Martin Electrofurnace Hall, or its surrounding buildings. The Soviets, having little in the way of manpower to defend, must make the most of the situation and pick their shots carefully. A few German squads falter and break, but it is not enough to stop the wave of bodies from approaching further. As some Russians attack a PSW 222(L) in V7, return fire from the armored car deals a crushing blow to the unprotected squad and crew. To make matters worse, a sniper in the vicinity struck the fanatic squad holding out in M16, breaking their morale. A nearby StuG moves up to Hall 6a to help break the last defenders up north. While its shot doesn't accomplish anything, the main benefit is to prevent any Russians from trying to rout outside to safety.

The Germans luck out again with a second Heat of Battle result, battle hardening a half-squad who would otherwise have gone berserk (and drawn fire!) There's not much in terms of prep fire from the Soviet troops, if only because of all of the blocked LOS. Several units re-position themselves to hold the northern side of Hall 4. The various movements take a turn for the worse when a squad breaks and drops their MMG, a weapon the Russians can ill afford to lose at the moment. The turn ends with the Germans winning yet another Close Combat...

!!!:siren:!!!

Concealment is now in effect. Yes, I've been omitting this for some time, but its appropriate to add it at some point, especially considering that concealment can really help out the defender (It halves all firepower against it, minus a few exceptions) and isn't lost unless certain conditions are met, such as suffering a PTC or greater, or moving out in open ground while in view of the enemy.

Artillery shells continue to rain down on Hall 4, and a squad breaks from the intense shelling. There isn't enough of a break in the line to properly exploit, however. This gives the Germans a false sense of security and attempt to storm the factory from the West, but a duo of squads lay down absolutely devastating fields of fire and break at least 3 fascist squads. Suffice the say that, while more bodies can be thrown at the problem, the large number of broken squads delayed any possibility of capturing the factory by at least 2 turns. As the initiative goes to the Soviets, they manage to beat back some Germans attempting to access the Gun Construction Hall; this too, is sure to disrupt their plans of attack. Annoyingly, troops appear to be getting lost in the sewers quite frequently...

As the turn closes out, the Red reinforcements finally arrive near the front and begin setting up inside the various factories, ready to protect them with their lives.

What actually happened that day? (According to Stalingrad Battle Atlas, Vol II - by Anton Joly)
October 19, 1942
Weather: Overcast, heavy rains, windy.

Recognizing the difficulties of urban and close quarters combat, German High Command requests reports from all corps involved on the details and new experiences involving such combat.

German troops occupy the northern part of the Gun Factory, although enemy nests of resistance appear once more. North of Stalingrad, 40-70 enemy tanks are reportedly seen. The adverse weather grounds air support for the Germans. The rain (and snow) create terrible conditions for vehicles, and combat is less intense than previous days of fighting.

V.S Grossman (Soviet War Correspondent) reports that the fight for Stalingrad is scarcely measure in meters. Every inch of ground is doggedly contested, with control exchanging sides multiple times in a day. There would be no surrender for the men inhabiting the dilapidated husks of the Volga Factories. The men would either stop the Germans, or die trying.

German losses for October 18th, 1942 in Stalingrad are reported as: 166 men wounded, 45 killed, and 4 missing.

The Germans reported captured or killed: 537 prisoners (including 10 defectors).

---Do keep in mind that these numbers are not complete, as some data was lost in the intervening years, and accurate counts are difficult to ascertain in the best of conditions. The nature of the fighting at Stalingrad also made it hard for the Russians, especially, to keep accurate numbers on losses. That, or they are not yet documented and have not been mentioned in the Atlas for this particular day.

October 19th, 1942 - Day 3, Part 3

The story so far:

The Germans continue their push to capture Hall 4, and score a great success immediately when Petachiok, the Soviet 9-2 leader, breaks from a well placed shot by the StuG IIIB. While he isn't dead, the loss of a great leader, as well as a squad with a machine gun, does limit how much firepower can be thrown at anyone attempting to break into the factory. Soon after, the Germans do just that, forcing their way into Hall 4. It's not all rosy as shots are taken at any incoming aggressors, with some pinning, some breaking, and others dying. In the process of defending the motherland, at least one Soviet squad breaks in final protective fire. A sneaky PSW 222(L) makes its way behind the red frontline and gets a very lucky hit against a due of broken squads, reducing one of them.

Down south, the Germans progress towards Hall 6e and along the Stalnaya boulevard, but goings are slow as nobody wants to expose themselves to even slightly dangerous fire from the factory. The Martin Electrofurnace, however, may very well be forfeited after the two Russian squads inside roll boxcars. Residual alone will not protect the factory! To make matters worse, the Germans decide to breach one of the inside walls in the Martin factory, killing half a squad with the resulting explosion! The advancing fire phase yields no spectacular results, but the close combat phase sees a Soviet squad ambush a German half-squad, eliminate it, and generate a leader in the process! By the end of German turn 5, the Germans have a foothold in Hall 4, and the Martin Electrofurnace factory is nearly under their control.

During the Soviet rally phase, Petachiok regains his senses and becomes better than ever, battle hardening to become a 10-2! Sadly, this is almost immediately followed up by DOUBLE BOXCARS, killing off a squad-equivalent of units. With fighting now erupting inside Hall 4, there is little some can do but shoot at any targets they can see, as retreat would only serve to expose their backs to an all-too-eager enemy. The shots by the defenders miss their mark, unfortunately, but the same happens to the Germans. Underneath the factories, another squad loses its way [And VASL seriously doesn't have a SEWER - LOST counter?!]. Meanwhile, plenty of Russian troops manage to enter the Gun Construction Hall right before the Germans can do anything about it, and a frontline is quickly established. As the turn continues to play out, a German sniper lines up a shot on Softnum, the only other named leader, and his wounds require him to be pulled out of service. 1.5 German Squads are eliminated in CC to no Russian losses.

As the turn order goes back to the Germans, their mortar artillery manages to break a unit, oh happy day! Double snake eyes are rolled, one for a great attack, the other to turn a Russian squad berserk in their morale check. There aren't enough German troops about to safely attempt getting into the Gun Construction Hall, and as such will refrain from doing so for now. Snipers abound, with one German squad getting pinned, while the axis sniper finds a lovely stack in P18 ripe for shooting. More men enter Hall 4; if they can't drown the enemy in lead, they'll do it in blood! A great shot from an ATR from the upper floor of Hall 6e to G38 reminds the user that even 1 FP isn't something to always scoff at! Later, the Russian AT gun section claims yet another Armored Car, and even gets a kill in the Close Combat phase! History will surely remember this small group of men in Pavlov's Rubble!

The combat doesn't let up in Hall 4, with several German squads breaking. A sniper takes aim the hero and fanatic squad he is with and lets loose several rounds, managing to both kill the unnamed hero and breaking his friends! Following up on this success, the Russians try to guarantee they'll kill the fanatic squad, but their greed gets the best of them and they break after taking fire from an MMG twice in a row. The Russian berserk squad runs into O12 under a hail of bullets, survives, and even takes out a half-squad in TPF. Artillery further down claims another broken squad. The snipers act again, this time narrowly missing Petachiok and killing a half-squad nearby. As men begin to rout away, a squad and leader are eliminated as they were practically surrounded. [Looking it over later, I probably should have had them enter the sewers...]

The sound of death and destruction dies out slowly as the day comes to an end.

This is so drat brutal. Out of curiosity, is there a way to capture and use enemy equipment in this game? Since both the Soviets and the Germans did that a lot during the war.

If it happened in real life, it can happen in ASL.

I believe the Germans had a Russian MMG, could've tried taking the AT Gun left in the southwest if they wanted, the two ATRs near the Martin Electrofurnace, and another machine gun on the eastern side of Hall 4 but didn't for lack of trying.

I know the Russians could've gotten an LMG lying somewhere in hex O21 or something, but yhe end of the day kinda messed with grabbing and retaining stuff

Its even better cause if you use a captured gun in a night scenario it acts as an automatic sniper activation as mistaken fire, and I think it has an extra something for other friendly troops.

They usually break down faster, in regular play, because the break number is lower (men who dont train with whatever gun wont necessarily know how to fix jams/breaks)
And its sometimes a mission objective, for the bigger stuff

October 20th, 1942 - Day 4, Part 1

The story so far:

As fierce fighting continues into a fourth day, the men on both sides are becoming increasingly tired. Both sides are losing men at rates that may not be sustainable, and if a respite isn't given by the Germans, their morale may falter in the coming days. By the same token, the Russians cannot afford to keep throwing men into desperate defenses, although they have little choice than to contest every inch of ground they hold, lest they be thrown back across the Volga.

To note, the day's reinforcements are the following:

Germans
Pioneer Company A
Panzer IV Ausf. F1 Platoon A

Russian
SMG Company C
T60 M42 Platoon A

The Germans are eagerly awaiting their air support to provide some much needed help in eliminating strong points within the city, especially in Hall 4 or Hall 2, while reinforcements in the form of a Pioneer company and some Panzer IVs move towards the East to help breakthrough the Russian lines.

The major action for the day commences with mortars delivering high explosive shells to their enemy as machine guns attempt to eliminate the pesky AT gun up in the north. The German forces in Hall 4 form assault detachments, carefully inching their way forward, doing whatever they can to expose the Russians still found within the factory, while minimizing any danger they surely will be exposing themselves to. In some instances, the ploy works, and the hope is that the advancing troops will be able to shrug off whatever the Russians throw at them in order to dispense their own fury.

As reinforcements for the Germans start to arrive in the area, at least one group is caught offguard by a Russian mortar on a factory rooftop. The lack of warning by troops who had made their way back for food, supplies, or medical assistance missed that particular tidbit, and a junior NCO pays the price for it. In the south, just outside Hall 1, the Germans suffer a setback when two squads break from heavy pressure applied by the troops guarding Hall 6e. An impressive display is made by a Russian 1st line squad when they employ molotov cocktails against a German squad, killing many and breaking the rest. Soon after, several locations become entangled with close combat actions, and while most develop into deadly melees, the Germans gain the upper hand. In O17, a poor tactical decision is made when a German squad is able to escape close combat through poor action by the Russians, and they retreat North. This leaves the Foundry (Hall 5) wide open for exploitation by the red menace.

As the day progresses, the Russians manage a series of attacks by their upper-level mortars, one opening the gates in the middle of the German line for any to enter and wreak havoc. Communist snipers also make their presence felt on numerous occasions, whereas Axis snipers are and remain quite silent by comparison. And then the Soviet reinforcements enter the area and begin to rush towards the defensive lines to shore them up, or perhaps set up as a staging ground for aggression. The turn ends with a few more units breaking, of note the crew manning a HMG in P33, and several melees concluding, with casualties on both sides.

Throughout all this, both the German air support and the Russian artillery are notably absent in their participation. One wonders if either will make a showing...

What actually happened that day? (According to Stalingrad Battle Atlas, Vol II - by Anton Joly)
October 20, 1942
Weather: Deep cloud cover, rain, periods of heavy snowfall

The Russians are shelling positions on the northern front, with some 30 tanks being included in an attack following the shelling. An offensive has taken place against the defensive line between the Volga and the Don, with forces from three new infantry divisions and approx. 120 tanks on the main axis of attack. German troops repelled 10 attacks while inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. Many men lay dead, 30-40 tanks have been destroyed, and many men have also been captured. The Luftwaffe could only provide limited support due to the weather conditions.

305th Infantry Division has continued fighting to clear out positions in the workshops and fortifications of the Gun Factory. No major operations have been conducted.

Pravda (20.10.1942) reports that the Germans have attacked strong points in the worker village area, with up to 40 tanks taking part in the offensive. After fierce fighting, the Germans were forced back to their starting lines, with many casualties left behind. A pilot, Airman Lavrenenko, has fought with distinction, fighting against several German fighters and downing one with a frontal attack. Despite being wounded, he made it back to his airfield and landed safely.

German losses for October 19th, 1942 in Stalingrad are reported as: 112 men wounded, 32 killed, and 1 missing.

The Germans reported captured or killed: 217 prisoners (including 23 defectors), one barge.

(German troops in the industrial sector have lost 30% of their personnel strength. Tank losses are as high as 70%.)
(Several Russian infantry divisions have suffered such high losses in infantry that they have effectively been reduced to Headquarters only. Three such divisions are shipped back across the Volga.)

Red Barricades Factory Locations

Hall 6a (Manufacturing) is the northernmost factory on the map, covering O6 to P9. Two large walls cut a surprising amount of Line of Sight between the northern and southern sides, each of which containing a stairwell to access the 2nd floor and rooftop.

Hall 4 (Assembly) is the largest single factory, not counting upper level locations. It also features lots of open rooftops due to artillery and aircraft attacks, as well as numerous large walls. It is found between Hall 6a and Hall 3.

Hall 5 (Foundry) is actually two separate buildings, with numerous large walls as seen in Hall 4. The southern building has lost a large portion of its roof. It is found just west of Hall 4 (Assembly).

Hall 3 (Gun Tube) has an interesting mix of large walls, sewers, and a stairwell. It is located just south of Hall 4 (Assembly).

Hall 7 (Assistant Power), Hall 6 (Manufacturing), and Hall 1 (Electrofurnace). Hall 7 is the smallest factory, with only 4 hexes. These buildings are located just south of Hall 5 (Foundry).

Hall 2 (Gun Construction) is a large, skinny factory, without any access to upper levels. It has lost a large amount of its rooftop. It can be found just east of Hall 1, 6, and 7.

Hall 6c (Manufacturing) is another group of two individual buildings, found just east of Hall 2.

Hall 6d(?) (Manufacturing) is yet another Manufacturing hall, found south of Halls 6c and southeast of Hall 2.

Hall 6e (Manufacturing) is the largest, most intact factory. Of note, it can cover a large amount of ground to the South and West thanks to the lines of sight provided by the upper locations. It is found south of Halls 6c and 6d.

Normally, a multi-hex building would have what's called "inherent staircases" in each hex, meaning a unit can go from the ground floor to 1st level in any hex. When there is the presence of a white square, it means that only that hex can be used to change levels. The hollow black circles are sewers.

Using the below image as an example:

Hexes Q34 and T34 are staircases that can allow a unit to go from the ground to level 1 to the rooftop.
There are sewer entrances in hexes R33, Q35, and T34

The little white dot at the center of each hex is the visual indicator of the center of the hex, and what you draw LOS to and from.

October 20th, 1942 - Day 4, Part 2

The story so far:

The turns start with some rally attempts, some successful and others not quite. One German half-squad goes fanatic after rolling snake eyes on a rally attempt. Shots ring out across the frontline, while a large mortar manages to score a hit against the Russian AT gun in Z2, finally, and breaking the manning crew! A StuG IIIB distances itself from the Gun Construction Hall in order to get a better position covering the crossroad at N20/N21. The Russians immediately begin putting down mortar rounds to do whatever possible to destroy it. Several units break in Hall 4, and at some point I take a lengthy look at the IIFT (Heresy, I know). Another German vehicle moves into position to watch the Landing Strip Gully in order to shoot at the T-60s that were moving up that way. Germans are sent towards Hall 5 (Foundry Hall) in order to prevent a local breakout which could either re-capture a lot of ground for the Russians, or force encirclements and kill off susceptible units. In the south, pioneers rush towards the Gun Manufacturing Hall in order to reinforce it, and potentially push into Soviet-controlled ground. The melee near the N20 crossroads is won by the Germans, which should help in the future for encircling the Russians not in the Foundry Hall.

During the Russian portion, they roll boxcars for the AT Crew, sealing their fate. I will now never have to worry about that AT gun in Z2, so long as no lone Russians infiltrate there and re-man it. The Red artillery is finally getting some use, with a Spotting Round being called in on the stronghold of M22. Reinforcements march west to help buffer the German attack, while the T-60s continue to roll forward, toward the StuG IIIB. (The reason I do this is because backing up and going around would be time consuming and the StuG IIIB doesn't pose a great threat to T-60s by itself.) The StuG IIIB promptly runs out of AP, and then HEAT, which will greatly help the Russian cause. The units straddling the Gun Manufacturing Halls take a beating and the push will likely be cancelled, provided the reinforcements can't stabilize the situation.

October 20th, 1942 - Day 4, Part 3

The story so far:

I learn a lesson in LOS and Hindrances in factories, which I should have known earlier, but regardless, it's not something any one side had a major advantage on. As the Germans begin their attacks in preparation for moves, the StuG IIIB in Y9 opens up on a T-60 with HEAT and blows it away, although that uses up their last HEAT round. The StuG will have a tough time doing anything more with their HE shells. The nearby machine guns attempt to help, but the armor on the Russian tanks is just too durable at even that short range. Not wanting to leave the fortified location, I try to harass the Russian radioman in order to cancel the artillery. [I believe this is also the episode I learn that I read the rules on Debris wrong. Damnit...] The Germans move some units out east from Hall 4, but at least one is caught out when I find out that the LOS is good from the enemy position... In a bid to contest the Foundry Hall, I have at least one squad sent out from M22 but they are pinned down in the road, and other units are sent in to take over. The German Panzer in the south, with an armored leader, loses its coaxial machine gun, but is also pinned due to a shot from the enemy hunkered down in Hall 6e. Things continue to go wrong for the tank as it bogs later in the phase moving through debris. Some good rolls by the Russians cost the Germans some vital movement and at least one half-squad, as a few units attempt to make it into the Gun Construction Hall's southern end from the Martin Electrofurnace.

Then some artillery came crashing down on M22 and the surrounding area. Luckily, it did little to no damage. Despite their best attempts, the Germans can do little against the lone squad in the Foundry Hall. This single unit has cost the Germans about 2 turns of movement for some vital units, giving time for the reinforcements to come up and for frontline troops to shoot at better odds. As the German turn closes out, numerous close combats erupt; most will turn into melees afterwards, one turns into a stealthy retreat for a concealed half-squad, and the Russians succeed in controlling the N20 crossroads once more.

And then the artillery strike happened. Everything happened so fast... one moment there was a squad and vehicle out in the road, and the next thing anyone knew, the StuG IIIB was turned into a smoking wreck, flames burning vividly from the steel corpse. In the same instant, a catastrophic hit landed on the German-fortified building in M22. Not a single occupant remained standing. Its a small wonder the building didn't collapse entirely, although possibly it was due to the fortifications adding some additional structural integrity to the building. Regardless, the Germans were reeling from that for some time. To make matters worse, another leader and squad were cut off when their advance was cut short, and turned into sitting ducks in Q18. A Russian squad also takes to the sewers in an attempt to surround the various units in Hall 4. The effects of this turn effectively reset the German efforts in their middle, now having to re-reinforce the Foundry Hall. It also cost them some valuable firepower in the form of machine guns and at least one DC.

Frustration begins to set in for the Germans. Not all is lost, as the Luftwaffe finally arrives on the scene. Movement abound, furthering the chaotic action taking place between vehicles in/near Y8 and the Landing Strip Gully. Some German squads break in the south from some bad movement and good rolls, while the player turn finishes with more close combats failing to provide a victor, or developing into melees.

October 20th, 1942 - Day 4, Part 4

The story so far:

As the Russian Turn 4 starts, rallies go poorly for both sides. The Russians prepare to have more artillery come down on M22, maybe they are hoping to rubble the fortified location? In the confusion of the various buildings, smoke, and inaccurate maps, the spotting round falls to the south, yet it still hits a target-rich environment. If the Germans aren't careful, they'll have more casualties by the King of the Battlefield. [I explore the values of the IIFT a little bit] As well, the German PSW 222(L) is blown to pieces by the adjacent T-60 M42 (I didn't realize you couldn't Prep Fire as a vehicle in Motion). Several other shots are made simply to keep the Germans down and in cover. The Russian reinforcements finally arrive on site to start making a difference, reinforcing both Hall 4 and the Gun Construction Hall.

And then Petachiok and his accompanying squad get caught by snake eyes while trying to move back towards friendly forces. A simple 4FP shot turns deadly when it chooses the powerful leader in a follow-up random selection roll and he dies outright. The fighting in Hall 4 is a back and forth event with some squads breaking, others pinning, but not much in terms of decisive kills. A very lucky shot pins a squad that had emerged from the sewers, behind the Germans in Hall 4. They shouldn't cause as much havoc now! The lack of any AP ammo from the remaining StuG IIIB really shows when a direct hit yields no result against the flimsy T-60 in AA9.

But while the fighting rages on in the streets, the Luftwaffe drones on above, ready to deliver their payloads. The first Stuka makes its dive, machine guns blazing before a large cylinder is seen separating from the aircraft. The resulting explosion leaves only a ruined hull as the tank is obliterated. Pleased with their assistance, the 2nd plane is told to seek targets of opportunity, which it attempts to hit the men hunkered down on the roof of Hall 3... which the pilot confuses with the small building in O18/P18. While the machine guns force the Germans to go to ground, pinned, the bomb itself misses its mark, to the great relief of the Krauts.

An ambush in R12 by a Russian half-squad takes out a full German squad, helpfully dropping their LMG for the taking if need-be. The melee right next to it continues on for what seems like the 4th turn! The same is said for the Russian squad in the Foundry Hall, while the Germans get a lucky break against one of the two Russian squads they were stacked against in the southern portion of the Gun Construction Hall. I had also temporarily forgotten about the CC in O18, which ended in a German victory over the opposing conscripts.

What would have been a great 12FP shot to an adjacent location AFTER halving for concealment, and with only a +2 modifier ends with both a captured Russian HMG and a German MMG both malfunctioning at the same time. At the time I didn't realize that captured weapons couldn't be repaired, so I should've gotten rid of it immediately by simply destroying it, oh well! As it to mock me, the dice gods provide the Germans with a pair of 1's to make up for the boxcars, casualty reducing the pinned squad in P15, and only a great morale check roll saves it from a worse fate. Then, the sole remaining T-60 brews up the StuG IIIB beside it (I think I've been doing some TH calculations wrong, particularly Point Blank Range, but I'll talk about it in the next day.) The Red tank is saved from any immediate retribution thanks to a good pin result on a half-squad, as well as having enough armor to prevent the MMG from doing anything.

The pressure mounts for Hall 6e as a German squad makes it into the adjacent Manufacturing Hall just for me to discover that... the Mortar on the roof can't hit targets that close! Concealed units move in from the south-west, and the Russians flub a critical attack to keep the oncoming Germans at bay. (I think the FG was illegal because they don't have a direct connection, playing on!) Nazi firepower in the Advancing Fire Phase fails to make its presence felt. The Russian squad that had attempted to hit the Germans in the back line is eliminated for failure to rout in O12. A rather pitiful way to give 2 CVP to your opponent... While numerous other close quarters combat actions take place throughout the battlefield area. Most of them end in (partial) success by the invaders.
