Aardvark! posted:my kingdom for a plate of chicken on a stick and egg rolls with a cup of hot mustard YOOOO I am the only person I have ever known to get packets of hot mustard with chinese takeout eggrolls. They are phenomenal together, the mustard plays so well against the greasy crisp of an egg roll. Can't get anyone to even try a single bite. They don't know what they are missing. Also chicken on a stick is a top tier buffet item

When I order takeout as a group, some people use soy sauce packets, some people use duck sauce packets, but the mustard is 100% ignored and I get to keep all of it. It's also pretty good on a bunch of the fried ephemera that constitute a "pu pu platter" - except the shrimp donut thing, that is good with duck sauce.

WHATS IN YOUR PU PU PLATTER?! I think this is very regional, and many places don't even have a pu pu platter??? Google says it is a Polynesian/tiki bar thing that kind of wound up in chinese takeout????? The one from my local place is 2x bag of boneless pork spare rib, 2x meat on a stick, 2x ring of fried dough with whole shelled shrimp tails inside, 2x shrimp toast, 4x chicken wing, and 2x eggroll. It's like the appetizer sampler but a bunch of that stuff is exclusive to the pu pu platter, you can't order it alone. It is really good and fun to share with people that never tried it and are like "lmao poo poo platter"

I've always thought of egg rolls as a hot mustard delivery vector

Here I think you are much more likely to get soy sauce, but also the red sweet and sour sauce with most chinese take out which I think tastes gross, and I would rather have the egg roll plain then use that. The hot mustard is definitely the superior choice but typically I feel like you have to ask for it or they won't bother, but they generally have some.

It's gotta be a 50/50 mix of duck sauce or preferably the sns sauce that looks like duck sauce (not the red) and hot mustard. That's ideal.

if you're at a place that has the pink sauce you more often see at hibachi places ("yumyum sauce" or as I once heard, "chinese ketchup"), then applying a big line of that and a big line of mustard along the top is PRISTINE

I loving hate places that give you a pint of red sugar sauce and an eyedropper of hot mustard

Truly miss Sizzler buffet's, but specifically for the corn nugget/fritters and pudding selection. Oh man, whatever they injected into that deep fried ball of creamed corn was just delightful.

There was a great buffet nearby called Teppanyaki that closed down over covid. Nowadays if I want a buffet, I have to go to a famously bad one. There is a great Indian place nearby which I guess is buffet style but I don't think that counts?

i posted about this place in the Americana thread. it's a place i used to go to a lot as a kid and i have fond memories of it even though the food was almost certainly terrible. it's still exists, but only just. living on borrowed time. i'm surprised it survived covid honestly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDqLSQwI_44 ----------------

The only buffet we've found that is still open is the Pizza Ranch's, which is a Christian values ... pizza buffet. We went a month back because of reasons and it was packed full of people who were seriously too fat to walk and rascals everywhere. As soon as a pizza came out, it went to empty. I think we sat for almost 20 minutes before I got a single slice of anything. Buffets have always been depressing, but I think all this inflation has magnified the effect of "fat people eat all the food at the buffet" effect. We're never going back because it was so loving depressing. Also, yes, hot mustard with my eggs rolls and the rest goes into the chinese meal which is hopefully peanutbutter chicken something something.

My GF hat to kill some time between appointments and she wanted to try a buffet. It seemed okay when we walked in but I noticed some cost cutting measures like the "crab bake" being obviously packaged surimi with cheese dumped on top and things of that nature. She has bad luck picking places, last time she found a conveyor belt pho place that claimed they had no idea how all the rotten shrimp got there

I'd actually go to Golden Corral alone once every few months a few years ago - it was nice to be able to get whatever...pot roast, a salad, some meatloaf and some veggies...but it is like $15+ and that is getting water, and they have a waitress who comes around and fills your drink so you gotta tip to not be an rear end in a top hat. Just not worth it plus you are the solo dude in GC. If it was like $9.99 and you could just get 2 plates or something, they are making all their money on people like me not the old fatties in there camped out for 3 hours.
