I think fundamentally they don't really seem to like things for what they are, they like them as signifiers of their heroic struggle against The Wokes or whatever and if they can't think of it that way it's not as interesting. I am furiously cranking my hog to the lady with the big boobs off the television because that's my duty as a proud american patriot, any minute now there's going to be a woke KGB commando bursting through my window to put my dick and balls in a cage and I simply can not achieve orgasm unless I think about that possibility.

Ingroup/outgroup tribal signifiers are definitely part of it. That's also how they can descend into really contradictory takes. They want to seem like plucky rebels but are huge conformists and want everyone to wear their allegiances on their sleeves.
