Stumbled across a website indexing thousands of obscure old magazine covers, and I'm really digging the aesthetics of xeroxed fantasy horror zines from 1985. http://www.philsp.com/ So dig around and share your faves or maybe some cool stuff from your private stash of dragons and barbarian babes. It's not just sci-fi either, there's lots of neat old stuff.

My sister had a bunch of those Dungeon mags back in the day despite never playing D&D to my knowledge. Fun to flip through and look at the art and try to make sense of bizarre second edition rules errata. Some more fun stuff and on the lighter side

I always thought this was a good one. Also, you can read the entire magazine here. Looking at the ads from 1989. The world and TSR is so different. Just look at the advertising. 36 models in a Games Workshop figure box! Hell, this already got covered on SA quote:Simply incredible. As Dragon magazine matures you can see their artwork has as well. They have gone from just "sweet rear end" to "sweet rear end post-modernism". The level of detail here is what really sells the idea of this whole world where the good old USAF has to fight dragons with F-16s. You can see the little stencils on the glass of the cockpit so you know this pilot is about #1 when it comes to fraggin' dragons. This picture is pretty much the basis for the excellent movie "Reign of Fire" which is one of my all time favorites. If you've never seen it it's the one where the guy from "The Machinist" and the guy from "Amistad" team up in London to fight an invasion of dragons that have taken over the future. They have tanks and helicopters and crap and the dragons are still kicking rear end right and left. Highly recommended, as well as this cover. In fact, just put "Reign of Fire" in your NetFlix thingy and then look at this picture to get pumped until it arrives. Comstar has a new favorite as of 12:45 on Aug 27, 2020 |

I'm a big fan of hilariously dated Playboy magazines. Here's a couple of my favorites: (mildly ) https://i.imgur.com/RUQp46g.jpg https://i.imgur.com/s4E8Yf2.png

We had a bunch of old midcentury Popular Science issues when I was a kid, and I always liked looking through them. The science quality was often somewhat debatable but the cover illustrations were often pretty great. Also I found this little gem while looking for covers I remembered

They shouldn't have hidden them behind a subscription wall or we'd be much better off as a nation

I'm not gonna lie though, that cover seemed cool as hell at the time. Enter also had programs in BASIC and stuff that you could type in and run. They used to put out magazines to promote movies, spoilers be damned i guess.

What little I can find online about Shadow Sword suggests it actually was just a fantasy zine, but goddamn, was I expecting this to be gay porn. Shirtless warrior cover! A "mature readers only" box! "Cute thieves!"
