Back in the day I was 'Promotions Manager' of a club that pretty much meant I got paid $10 an hour plus free drinks. Pretty much went around starting drinking games and encouraging terrible binge drinking. The best bit was having a little RF remote for the Nightlife system used for music when the DJ was passed out/not at the decks. $10 could buy a punter a push on the next track button. But drugs and competition bribes were where the money was really at.

I've already been on the lookout for a new job - either within the same company (preferably, since my benefits are awesome), but looking outside too (any Austin goons know of any tech jobs hiring that can handle outdated skillsets/fast learners? I know this is essentially going into entry level all over again..).

Last week I got slapped with 5 attendance warnings and 1 writeup, all because I left early after finding out GF was in an accident on her way to work (carpooling with a coworker; she's fine, coworker that was driving has a broken collarbone and arm). Apparently the store manager lost his poo poo and made my boss sift through every "excused" absence over the past year (I've called out a few times for migraines, which are documented in my file with work, and supposed to be excused), though not directly because of me - supposedly the entire produce department opening team called out sick that day. Supposedly. I plan to ask the store manager about that; he's not very approachable unless he knows you already, luckily we know each other.

I've noticed one particular overnight manager has become extremely passive aggressive since I got back, finally started taking my aisles and giving me 3-4 difficult ones (I had 15 pallets of drinks last night across 4 aisles, which is a shitload for 2 people, drat near impossible for one, and really impossible for someone who has knee/hip issues), told me "if you have to have doctor's appointments, I expect you to drop down to part time, I can't have you leaving on time - you have to stay until we're ALL done, no matter what" (which resulted in me going to my boss, who went to HR with me, which resulted in the hostility becoming more open).

Time to move on. My body is giving out anyway, I can't do the physical part of this job anymore. But I'm gonna drag him down kicking and screaming with me with plenty of HR chats, and since TX is a one party consent state (plus signs all over the store about recording in progress), I'm recording every interaction. Just gonna leave my phone recording anytime I see him.

The saying "people don't quit jobs, they quit managers" doesn't quite directly apply in this case - my department manager is generally fantastic (the manager I described dealing with during an HR meeting is his co-manager... equal in rank, but I get along with him well). It's the loving drama queens on the overnight manglement team that I'm quitting. And the bottle of ibuprofin a week habit. One unintended consequence of driving a P71 with rubber flooring - the cats sit right under the foot wells, so my feet get nice and toasty if I let it idle. Helps so much with foot pain if I let the car idle a bit before driving home...

Oh, I have bad news about the tech workforce.

I have feeling the hive mind here should be able to help you hunt down something. The job market is insane these days, and (at least in my world) hiring managers are happy to find someone interested and motivated and willing to learn, even if they don’t have direct experience.

How are your soft skills and what is your interest level in corporate governance from an information security perspective? It’s a great place to be if you’ve got a technical background (of any age, the principles haven’t really changed since Grace Hopper was bug hunting) and the ability to deal with the technical and business sides of things at the same time.

My tech knowledge is pretty drat out of date - the last REAL tech support job I had that wasn't just "reset your modem" or "so this is how outlook works" was in the late 90s, supporting credit card machines and.... fuel pump CRIND (Gilbarco pumps, the earliest pump-based point of sale). But I'm willing to learn, I know how to bend Google's search engine to my will, and I know my way around Windows 95/98/NT 4.0/2000/XP/7/8/8.1/10, along with DOS. Used to know CLI Linux and OS/2 2.11 through 4.x (was even a beta tester for OS/2 at one point). I can fix drat near anything so long as I know what I'm looking for.

Hell we're doing in-store advertisements for our warehouses... the closest one is an hour and a half away. $1500 sign-on bonus, $17.50/hr to start. If you "make rate" you make WAY more - "make rate" means beating the timer on how long it takes you to pick your assignment and build up the pallets, they'll assign you more after. From what I understand, most people in good shape can make rate within a few months, it turns into $25/hr pretty quick when you're making rate.

I'm fine with governance, I'm pretty anal about security in general.

I know someone who's the "region expert" for accounting for Lowe's (they still make less than me, despite two decades in the job - really sad what Lowe's pays someone after that long). Lowe's is trying to eliminate accounting positions entirely and shift it all over to Brinks + head cashier (they've also cut back on store pickups/dropoffs by a large amount, I assume to save money) - but you need somebody who knows how to tickle the nether regions of their in-house point of sale when, say, someone does a $15,000 chargeback - you gotta pull camera footage, transaction logs, signatures, etc. That used to be a store manager + LP + accounting 3 way, but now it's head cashier + Brinks + corporate LP (with 7 days of remote camera retention vs the former 90 days of on-site + 14 days off-site retention they used to have) They don't even put a ceiling on their cash offices except for the newest stores, all you need is a tall ladder to drop in. Of course you're not getting near the office without someone noticing you, but they got rid of on-site LP too, so there's nobody really watching their cameras 24/7 (unlike Walmart).

Most retail cash offices for any decent size chain have that kind of scale setup. Walmart takes security to the far extreme though, I'm pretty sure they spend more on LP than any other retailer; Kohl's and Target would be really close.

Before the credit card systems went all digital if we got a charge back at the store we'd have to go to the back store room where all the physical charge slips that got printed out when a card was used and dig thru a stack of boxes to find that slip.
There'd be charge backs from 4-5 years previous and we'd have to find that one slip for that one card and photocopy it and fax it to the CC company.

Once it switched over we could just search by date print it out and fax it.

Lowe's is a mix of all of that. They keep on-site records for several years, but need the printed copy for whatever reason. Digital records aren't kept long at all.

So I just made the mistake of putting my resume online on Linkedin, and holy gently caress my phone blew up within a minute. EVERY SINGLE FUCKER was asking "do you HAVE to put in a 2 weeks notice at your current job?"

"I respect my current manager too much to hang him out to dry, so yes, I need to pu*click* Hello?"

They also ALL asked how much I currently make, which was always countered with "what is the pay range for the position?" "Well that depends on what you currently make" (wow dude, really? you got big balls asking me how much I make before you'll even give me a basic range of what the position MIGHT pay, and I'm coming from a completely unrelated field, but have lots of experience in your field)

I said $25/hr to a few of them (which several people on my team DO make, but I don't - the cap for my position is around $28/hr), "oh perfect, that's within the pay range for this <really entry level job at some company I've never heard of!>"

I didn't ask WHAT they made, I just asked if they were taken care of and mentioned what Papa John's had paid me as an assistant manglemer. Their burger flippers make more than what I made.

I decided to get out of retail back in ‘06 when I was the manager of a Sears Auto that was attached to a standard retail store.

One day the manager of the retail store, who was my boss as well because we were an attached unit, asked me to set up a tire and wheel display in the tool dept. to draw cross-traffic. I did it per her request and by the book as far as signage and location etc.

A couple of days later the regional manager comes by for a visit and says he doesn’t like the display so I immediately get thrown under the bus and she starts asking why I did that without her permission, and how could I even think about putting a display up like that all ugly and out of place. It was the last straw in dealing with her insanity and the general public’s stupidity. My resignation was on her desk the next week.

God bless retail workers, seriously. My brain can’t handle it. I deal with surgeons now and that’s sometimes akin to dealing with children, but it’s not thousands of them a day.

A long time ago I was having trouble getting folk out of the bar. It was an hour past our licence closing time and people just would not leave. Lights up, music off, rudely (as I dared) collecting glasses. It had been a real long day and I just wanted to get outta there.

One table was I swear to god the Fratellis from The Goonies. Mum and the two lovely sons. At some point I heard one of them swear at me and I lost it.

“Don’t you loving swear at me” (I am aware of the irony)

My boss was sitting at the end of the bar and he just patted my arm and told me to sit down and grab a beer, he would deal with it.

He wandered over to the table and as politely as possible informed these chumps that it was an hour past closing time, they needed to leave. Mama Fratelli loses her poo poo. She explodes, “you can’t treat us this way, we know the owner!”

So at this point, everyone in the bar is watching what is happening. Everyone in the bar also knows that my boss IS the owner of the bar.

He plays along for a while, complaining about how the owner is such an rear end in a top hat, treats him so poorly and he can’t wait to get fired so he can go work at McDonalds. The Fratellis are eating this poo poo up and giving him everything.

Eventually he turns around and says, “let me introduce myself, I’m **** and that’s my name above the door. I’m the owner and licence holder.”

One of the most cathartic moments of my life.

Anywho, that’s my long rear end story about making sure you know who you’re talking too :v:

I think our overall total jab rate in TX is something like 40%. We're back to having COVID wildfires, even among those jabbed. We went from ~30 new infections a day within Travis county (the county seat of Austin, and the largest county in the Austin metro area) to over 400 in less than 4 weeks. Add in two of the surrounding counties that make up Austin metro and we're well over 700 new cases a day. Again. My county had 451 new cases on Friday, which is more than Travis - despite having a much smaller population (less than half). Travis' peak was around 1100 a day, I see that probably happening next week. I think the county I'm in has already beat their daily high score.

Austin metro is over 70% with one, 60-65% with two, which is pretty drat good for being a red state. But Austin itself is back up to "stage 5" (as high as the COVID stages go), and our rear end in a top hat governor won't let us do jack or poo poo. Just says "Texans are intelligent enough to make their own choices", and bars cities, schools, anything receiving funding from the state, from enforcing masks, shutdowns, etc. I thought republicans were all about small government? He seems to be going the opposite way, he's making all the decisions for the 1200+ cities / 254 counties in Texas at this point. He's banned cities, counties, etc from making their own decisions. :fuckoff:

We were down to 13 available ICU beds for our trauma service area last night, which serves around 2.5 million people (our TSA, trauma service area, is 11 counties - Austin metro is largely considered to be 5 counties, but primarily made up of Travis and Williamson, sprawl is starting to bring Hays into the mix). Hospitals here are already trying to divert anyone that might need critical care to Houston, which is several hours away. My employer is staying quiet on mask use entirely, while Walmart and a lot of other major retailers are starting to require them again. Before our governor got involved, "stage 5" for Austin meant no dining at restaurants (inside or out, takeout only), bars/clubs closed entirely except for takeout drinks, masks required everywhere, essential trips only (i.e. grocery shopping, picking up food, etc), parks closed, etc. We need that to get a grip on this poo poo. The only good thing he's done is allow bars to serve drinks to-go, which allowed a lot to stay afloat during the peak of the pandemic (apparently it's now signed into state law, so permanent?).
