Problem description: If I attempt to have my laptop read a CD, the optical drive makes a weird clicking noise and will only work about 10% of the time. If it has trouble with official audio CDs then the drive is probably just dying. If it does it only with certain CD-Rs or CD-RWs etc. it could be a conflict between the drive and the media or the CDs have gone bad.

Well, the problem has returned three months after I installed a new optical drive, so it's clearly not an issue with the drive.

Makes me more concerned there's a motherboard/wiring/electrical issue that's damaging the drive. Although it is possible another drive has gone bad. Optical drives can be junky. I've seen a lot fail without much use. IIRC Lite-On had a really bad reputation at one point.
