Who What Now posted:What are you talking about, American cocktail sauce is ketchup and horseradish. No that's what your broke rear end parents told you. The recipe you quoted is correct and closest to but better than the cocktail sauce you'd get at a store.

Ketchup and horseradish is the quick and dirty solution. You can make it with some other kind of tomato based sauce if you're really trying to impress the neighbors but who wants them to eat all the shrimp anyway If you are adding mayo you need to be deported

Also re: the irony thing. In the UK at least, dining out was a relatively rare experience until the 70’s. A bunch of factors led to a big upsurge in demand for affordable dining, a gap readily filled by combination pub/steakhouses like Berni Inns, Schooner Inns, and Harvester Restaurants. The most recognisable meal, widely parodied at the time, was a prawn cocktail, steak and chips and a black forest gateau. Even today pretty much everyone over the age of forty would understand that if they came to my house for dinner and I served them that meal, I would be attempting to add a humorous or ironic component to an otherwise perfectly serviceable menu. e: i have actually done this and it’s great ee: ha, it even has its own wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prawn_cocktail,_steak_and_Black_Forest_gateau Torquemada fucked around with this message at 09:38 on Apr 6, 2022 |

I can eat A LOT of shrimp cocktail. On Christmas Eve there’s always a giant platter of shrimp cocktail among the other food. There are always probably 1-2 pounds of leftover shrimp at least. When I was a kid, Christmas morning usually one of the first things I’d do before even opening presents was hitting those sweet, sweet shrimp cocktail leftovers. I can’t put an actually number on it, but I bet I’ve eaten probably 30 shrimp on a day? My raw oyster record is official. 3 dozen in one sitting at a bar in town.

It's got tiny diced onions through it and is a lil bit spicier. They make a hot version too but when I said chili sauce I didn't mean like Mae Ploy although some of that with Kewpie Mayo makes a great dipping sauce for tempura prawns.

God I love 70s-80s decor. If I ever win the lottery I'm decorating my house like Tony Montana's mansion and eating nothing but shrimp cocktails from heavy tumblers and weird gelatine salads.

I mean you can get that sort of glassware at Salvos pretty cheap and pick up some red velvet by the yard at hobby lobby. All I'm saying is you may be able to fund this fantasy without a windfall of cash.
