Farfalle is a garbage pasta. If the "wings" are al dente, the bunched up center part is still crunchy. If the center part is al dente, the wings are mushy.

You didn't cook it long enough. It's not supposed to be "al dente", it's supposed to be cooked until it is done.

I use them all the time in pasta salads (molisano or better)

Take the noodles to a Himalayan peak and boil them low and slow. It's a weird hack that Big Noodle doesn't want you to know about.

I wish ramen noodles were more al dente but al dente isn't really a thing in East Asian restaurants. Udon can handle being cooked all the way because they are so thick and have a bouncy consistency.

Never had it, but looking at Google images, the ones I'm thinking of are wider even than that.

These ones. This brand specifically is an inch wide uncooked iirc, and has a good chewiness to them:

These are the widest dry noodles i could find in their aisle, about 10mm:

If we stop a touch short of nutrient slurry, I'd be perfectly happy to just visit a big public canteen for a hearty stew or soup or whatever can be cooked up in big "efficient" batches, even though I also enjoy doing my own cooking. Communal cooking doesn't have to be bad cooking.

Pre-made slurry is so inefficient. No need to expend precious energy credits to do what you can do with your own teeth, citizen.

Just take the cut vegetables and meat in your daily ration, heat them up a bit, and maybe incorporate some optional additives for palatability or nutrient enhancement. The resulting product can be dispensed in an open top vessel of the appropriate shape.

yeah but that wouldn’t always be true in every type of economic system. right now the problem is that it’s only economical to eat out of the cost of eating out is significantly less than the wages of the lowest earner in the household, but that also means that the people working in the communal kitchen have to be paid so little that they can’t afford to economically eat in the type of kitchen theyre employed in, even though it’s more socially efficient

u can solve that problem through sheer population density so that each restaurant or communal kitchen is serving absolute assloads of customers, or you can solve it with socialism or communism as an economic system

and the food doesn’t need to be bad!

For a sufficiently large population, yes it does. Because you will never be able to successfully satisfy everyone’s tastes, so there will always be people who don’t like it. The ultra-fussy won’t like it, nor will those who are really into food, as it will be tailored to the requirements of the majority, who usually have bad taste.

As usual, it’s the refined epicures who suffer. WON’T SOMEONE THINK OF THE EPICURES?!

I like watching youtube videos where they have huge kitchens feeding cafeterias full of Mongolian miners or the crews of aircraft carriers and such. I know people who have done that and know they tired of it after a while, but I think I'd like eating that way for quite a while before I'd need to putter around in the kitchen for myself or anyone else. I'm my family's only real cook so that may have something to do with it. I might be fooling myself, as eating at restaurants only, even for just a week or two, was torture when I've had to do that.
