Wait, missile production is my responsibility?

Oh.
What's the range on our mobile HPG? Will we be able to stay in contact with HQ or will it merely let us phone in two jumps out and shave a week or two off of a courrier flight?

Edit: Sarna says 50LY range on the HPGs. For comparison, a jump ship's max is 30LY. We will not be in direct communication with HQ, but we will absolutely be able to transmit directly to worlds 1-2 jumps away.

The ability to move within 1-2 jumps of Epsilon Pegasus rather than taking the 1-3+ weeks necessary to charge and jump all the way to Epsilon Pegasus to pass along news is huge.

That's the idea, although the subs/Von Luckners are designed to be deployed via paradrop so they won't be instantly combat capable.

I had no idea at all. Thats amazing.

If it weighs less than 76 tons, a King Karnov can transport it. If it also jumps, it can be combat airdropped.

If it doesn't jump, and has to be airdropped, it gets chutes; but preferably the King Karnovs land at an airfield and unload it there.

Are the strap on retro rockets to make non jump mechs air droppable not a thing yet? They were a thing by dark age officially at the latest. Stackpole spent a page or two talking about them in ghost war

I suspect Stackpole writes a lot of things that aren't actually canon, such as fusion engines exploding (or Stackpoling, as it were)

From a practical perspective, there are things you need to do with weight and balance to make landing assist retro rockets reasonable. If you're willing to accept "the mech falls on its rear end starting 5 meters above the ground, and cannot be steered or controlled until then" it's probably doable, but at that point just use a chute.

Mech drop packs are absolutely canon, and in use well prior to this timeframe.

From Tactical Operations:
introduced: 2457 (Terran Hegemony)
The BattleMech jump pack was developed to give jump-incapable BattleMechs a surprise edge in the early stages of battle, to help them cross particularly difficult terrain features, or to deploy them in combat drops.
Essentially an externally mounted, self-contained jump jet backpack, the system enables an otherwise ground-bound ’Mech to make a single full-length jump (or a few shorter jumps) in a pinch.
A ’Mech may carry only one Jump Pack of any desired weight. The additional weight is treated as externally carried cargo (see BattleMech Lifting Capabilities, p. 261, TW).

From Strategic Operations:
’Mechs, ProtoMechs, battle armor, WiGE Vehicles and vehicles with Jumping MP may make atmospheric drops. If a unit than can mount jump jets does not mount jump jets, it may either mount disposable jump jets (which automatically jettison upon touchdown; see ’Mech Jump Pack/’Mech Drop Pack, p. 292, TO) or a Vehicular/Battle Armor Dropchute;

Not only that, but there's knock on effects, like being able to linger for a day or two for a response without really impacting a travel schedule, being able to access an HPG without showing your face in a system(stealth) (if you jump in to visit a world, people know you're there), or to stay in touch with other local-ish forces that also have an hpg.
If you were to cooperate with another sldf force that also has one, you start to very quickly be able to put together a big picture of whats going on and act on it.

If you agree, go go vote! its pretty close! Every one matters - I think its even 50/50 right now.
election year joke goes here

Aren't jump infantry like, one of the actually useful/dangerous to mech infantry before the age of battle armor? I've Heard Tales, but don't have firsthand experience.
its almost a shame the mercury doesn't have jump jets, otherwise the fast recon lance would ALSO be air droppable too... I could see airborn tactics being real useful there too!

Lots of votes for the Rim Worlder. I'm sure it'll be fine. Probably.

It's a shame that we'll have to say goodbye to our pirate recruit right after she proved her reliability. Hope she doesn't have to remain in that holding cell for much longer, at least. Half a year will already have done enough damage.

If you're referring to our friendly thunderbolt pirate - you'll note our auxiliary lance is voting on three people. This is because they're our fourth in that lance!

If its the falcon pilot then yeah, iunno whats happening with them.

Oooooh, okay! Yes, I was, in fact, referring to our resident Ms. Thunderbolt, so that is a relief!
