It's the dangers of an LN adaptation, yeah. You're still in Year 1 of attending the school and the revenge plot hasn't been dropped but rather gone quiet for a bit in order to ratchet tensions down, but choosing to end an adaptation here is obviously awkward as you're shifting the climax of the series to something mostly unrelated to that. I say mostly, because it did still arguably serve as a notable point for the plot moving forward - namely the dangers of obsession, which is what "Getting lost in the spell" is basically a form of. Something that is extremely relevant to Oliver, and to a lesser extent Nanao, and it remains to be seen if they manage to break out of their own obsessions or are consumed by them as well.

LN spoiler: This is hammered home by the next checkmark in the revenge plot, where Oliver literally shaves several years off his life to complete the kill, and the target points out as they're dying that what Oliver's doing is completely against what his mother wanted for the world of mages.

Also some weirdness in having the mostly upbeat ending. Book 3 ends literally right after the kill, and Book 4 opens with a funeral for those that died, but I guess you need to end the series on a positive note, since they might not get another season and all that.
