While football is pretty set in its scheduling ways, soccer is a completely different animal for one big reason - in addition to a league structure, they also have a knockout competition that goes on at the same time. For example, in England they have the FA Cup. While desperately trying to go to sleep, an idea popped into my head: how would it go if the NFL had a similar competition? All 32 teams play each other eventually, it can't be that hard. I came up with the NFL Cup, whose rules I will explain: 1) The Opening Round is played Week 1 of the first season after a new winner is crowned (we will start in 2002) 2) Subsequent rounds will be matched up based on winners from the previous round, first come first served 3) A new round cannot begin until the previous round is completed 4) Playoff games can count in the NFL Cup, while preseason games do not The NFL Cup I ~Opening Round (all games Week 1, 2002)~ San Francisco over New York (NFC), 16-13 New York (AFC) over Buffalo, 37-31 (OT) Carolina over Baltimore, 10-7 Chicago over Minnesota, 27-23 San Diego over Cincinnati, 34-6 Kansas City over Cleveland, 40-39 Green Bay over Atlanta, 37-34 (OT) Indianapolis over Jacksonville, 28-25 Miami over Detroit, 49-21 Washington over Arizona, 31-23 Tennessee over Philadelphia, 27-24 New Orleans over Tampa Bay, 26-20 (OT) Denver over St. Louis, 23-16 Oakland over Seattle, 31-17 Houston over Dallas, 19-10 New England over Pittsburgh, 30-14 ~Round of 16~ Week 2, 2002 Miami over Indianapolis, 21-13 New England over New York (AFC), 44-7 New Orleans over Green Bay, 35-20 Denver over San Francisco, 24-14 San Diego over Houston, 24-3 Week 4, 2002 Oakland over Tennessee, 52-25 Week 16, 2002 Carolina over Chicago, 24-14 Week 6, 2005 Kansas City over Washington, 28-21 ~Quarter-Finals~ Week 7, 2005 Kansas City over Miami, 30-20 Week 10, 2005 Denver over Oakland, 31-17 Week 11, 2005 New England over New Orleans, 24-17 Week 1, 2008 Carolina over San Diego, 26-24 ~Semi-Finals~ Week 4, 2008 Kansas City over Denver, 33-19 Week 14, 2009 New England over Carolina, 20-10 ~FINAL~ Week 11, 2011 New England over Kansas City, 34-3 I'll be honest, I'm shocked it takes 10 seasons for this whole thing to crown a winner.

problem is that nfc and afc divisions are only guaranteed to play once every 4 years so you can catch some rough ones, like KC playing washington in 2001 and carolina and san diego playing in 2004 and so on.
