the overall coolest bird we sometimes see out here (siding aside raptors and stuff obv.) is the male hooded oriole. they mostly live down in Mexico but migrate up north for nesting season. very shy and flighty, unlike the raucous jays

That's why we went with budgies. Much shorter lifespan

there's a pair of ravens that have been nesting somewhere nearby for a few years, and i know that spring is coming when i hear one of them flying over the house fairly regularly going "GLORK! GLORK!" at the top of their lungs, i'm presuming they're making fun of how badly i shingled my roof

LAB have you ever read the sufi poem The Conference of the Birds? it seems to be right up your alley- it's really astonishing at times. i've pasted a bit of a contemporary translation:

The rufous hummingbirds are drinking at least half a liter a day, which makes me think the babies must have hatched and the moms are running themselves ragged catching insects. The males are still around and have claimed a single feeder for the females, kicking the resident Anna's hummingbird's to the backup feeders and the newly blooming flowers.

The first chestnut chickadees have fledged. Their parents flag us down whenever we are outside and ask for peanuts. This year we noticed that while usually they alight on our hands, pick a peanut, and then skeedaddle, now they land and chat for at least ten seconds, and we can hear the fledgling food-calls in the tree next to them. I spotted one in the woods yesterday after feeding their parent, but couldn't take a clear picture.

And yes, our handwashing discipline is ironclad.
