I didn't know either. Not everyone here was old enough at that time to care enough to memorize lines from a crappy horror movie and i'm not even the youngest myself anymore. So all the parts of the script that are poo poo (i would probably run out of fingers pointing out the ones in the short clip linked above) are actually meant to be a subtle sort of humor or what? vvvv Mithaldu fucked around with this message at 17:52 on Dec 5, 2008 |

Do you have Alzheimer's or something? If you honestly can't recall one of the more memorable lines from one of the higest-grossing films of the last century, which caused a revolution in movie CG, then I just don't know what to say. Also, I think I need to reemphasize the fact that this movie has goddamn dinosaurs in it. EDIT: And DODGSON!!!

hexadecimal posted:Omg its worse than fail!!!! What is dwarf fortress anyway and why are you visualizing it? Anyhow, Dwarf Fortress is a rogue-like strategy/god game which has game content in 3 dimensions. The creator is too busy creating a good interface for it, as he is creating possibilities for dwarven beard growth right now. As such i sat down and created this, inspired by an earlier static effort, in order to punch through the accessibility problems the game has. Also, it's blazing fast and looks nice. Newer versions than the one featured in the video are fast, that is. As of now this thing can update ~40000 discrete data sets within 2 seconds. If you meant my video, that may be an artifact of english not being my primary language. While i have a great amount of experience in text, i am incredibly self-conscious while actually talking english and especially in this video since it was my first audience-less presentation and unplanned to boot. Thanks for the feedback in any case, it's rare that i get useful comments.

I am crudely hacking out a raytracer in python. It can do spheres, and lights. That's it. I'm doing all of the math myself, no third party stuff except "math" (That means that it is really slow) Click here for the full 1000x1000 image. It was much easier than I thought it would be.

Click for Full. Got it completely working and made a quick installer. I wanted to do a couple quick projects with my winter break and it looks like I already got a decent start. Now I need to figure out a new project to occupy my time for the rest of break.

I've always wanted to write my own raytracer but I've been daunted by how much work it seems to be.. would you be able to drop in some C extension code when youre finished to speed up the computationally intensive stuff? Can I see (pretty please!)

Let me fix the currently broken coloring system, then I'll upload what I have. Up next, polygons!

Can I see (pretty please!) The ray-tracing algorithm is incredibly simple. Writing a simple ray-tracer can be done in less than 100 lines of code. Making it fast is the hard thing. If you want to learn ray-tracing and be taken through all the steps to write a fully featured one, buy the PBRT book or just grab the guy's source code. http://www.pbrt.org/

Me and a guy from my job have been working on a game for the iPhone called vConqr (previous Virtual Conquest). I've been working on the new website (https://www.vconqr.com) and some of the new game features, specifically downloadable maps and online play. It has been really interesting working with the iPhone. I come from a C# background and it has taken a while, but I've really grown to like obj-c with all it's [[[]]] goodness. We just submitted a new version to the app store which fixes a lot of complaints with the previous version, it's great to be able to make something which people play, instead of mindless bank software...

It is much easier than it looks, but there are a billion little ways to make it go fast. I just want to make it go right now, I don't care about speed. I'll share my code, but it would be better to look at a well designed one. Uploaded: http://bottlabs.org/dl/battlebott/Raytracer1.tar.gz (I hope it works) No documentation whatsoever, sorry. So, I presume that you can just touch a country to select it? How did you do boundary checking? Was it just ad-hoc (Ural is in this polygon, Western United States is in this polygon, etc.), or was it some kind of procedural method (graphically detect where borders are, create a polygon that represents that border). I'm working on my own collision detection system, and I'm just brushing up on octrees. The system is still quite in its infancy, but I thought I'd show you a picture nonetheless. Here are two images i made in one of my old raytracers. I'm rejigging it to be actually nice and incorporate all the new coding stuff / performance i know since I wrote it originally (about 2 years ago). Other then this I'm working on an iPhone turn based strat game (writing an editor atm). I'm not a massive fan on Obj-C so far, but it's not that bad I guess.
