I talked with a couple of the other DJs and we all agreed that it's time for a new thread since the original thread has for the first 20 or 30 pages broken links. Also region25 doesn't seem to post anymore so he couldn't update the OP or anything. I'll do my best to keep the OP updated and try to keep a list of all the SA DJs. Other relevant threads: Ask/tell: me about DJing (feel free to join in) The "how do I make electronic/club/DJ music" Megathread! SA DJs: Weapon of Choice New to Dance/electronic/this sort of music? Here are some tips/FAQ: Q: what are the different genres i'm so confused. isnt "better off alone" techno? A: Everyone will tell you something different for what genre is what. The best way to figure out what the different genres are is to browser through the sections of the majors sites (beatport.com , audiojelly.com , vinyl-distribution.nl , as a few example) Q: I don't like any one genre or I can't figure out how to choose what music to listen to. A. There are a few ways you can go about solving this problem: Start with an artist you like. If they are also DJs, download their sets (tribalmixes.com is what I use). If they arent DJs try websites that have a "users also like/purchased" feature (for example beatport does). If this doesnt help you, try using discogs and browsing around. New to DJing? I'll start of this thread with a year-end mix I did for 2008. http://www.awesometownradio.com/jonmitz/mixes/O2008/LaminarFlow_Orbital2008.mp3 Quality: 128kbps Length: 4:59:47 Size: 274.4 Mb Genre: Trance This mix took a lot of time and in the end I wasn't able to reduce it below 60 songs. I was hoping to make it a nice 2 hour mix, but there was just no way. I started with about 400 songs and then got it down tot he current 64. It starts off kind of slow (first 2 hours are all songs under ~132 bpm) code:

When posting tracklists, how do you guys determine how to write the tracks, like in what order the info is spelled out? jonmitz for example does Title - Mix - Artist while many others do Artist - Title - Mix... Is there a specific reason behind that, like the program used to make the mix or something? Or maybe something like focus on track vs focus on artist? Is it a conscious decision at all?

Right on with the new thread. You can put me down in San Francisco (even though I'm Oakland!!!) I spin funk, soul, and hip-hop mainly. The only permanent hosted mix I got right now is here, I got second place: http://rockstargames.com/upload/ As a side note, I've been working on some experimental poo poo lately and I hope to have some new mixes up real soon. I've been really into playing fast dance 45s at 33. Basically, I'm trying to make screw tapes in all different genres, with a focus on faster dance poo poo like DnB and 80's new wave. It's a little weird, so I'm hoping to run some mixes by ya'll first, before weirding out a party here...

Who said you had to pre-plan anything? Just write down the keys (and BPMs if necessary) of all your tracks and then either memorize or bring with you a circle of fifths. No pre-planning required.

I love pulling records outta my box and slamming them on. yeah, i think i'd feel differently if i was actually spinning records, but as long as i'm doing ableton i think this is the way to go, otherwise i just can't justify it as artistically valid. i really enjoy the work that goes into it; there's nothing better than getting home from work, smoking a bowl, and loving around with different blends for a few hours. i'm a compulsive perfectionist with my mixes and am not happy unless they're smooth and error free, start to finish. i'm starting to build up a decent record collection but it'll take me a few years before i have enough to produce the kind of mixes i do now, and even then it'd take several more years of practice before i'd be able to put out anything of this quality. i'd love to be that good and maybe i'll get there eventually, but i don't feel like that should preclude me from doing what i do now (i know that's not what you're implying). VVV i actually try to make my music creation process as mechanistic and inorganic as possible. it's a personal aesthetic choice, and as i said, i think extensive planning beforehand is great fun. to each his own. i know i'm not a dj. mingster fucked around with this message at 09:24 on Jan 8, 2009 |

Yeah I have to agree about it being spontaneous. I occasionally get a LOT of poo poo from people about me not mixing solely within similar keys. The problem with key mixing is it works sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't. In the end, your ear will tell you what sounds good, and some of the best transitions I have ever had were between completely opposite keys. I really get annoyed every time someone brings up harmonic mixing as if it's the only right way to mix. I don't keymark my songs when I burn them to CDs, since I never worry about harmonic mixing when I'm at a party (thats NOT saying I don't listen to what my ears tell me, this gets misinterpreted a lot) since I don't want to be limited by what keys I'm in. Sometimes I will run my songs through audio programs that determine the key and I only use it when I can't find a good way to transitions between songs. I for some reason seem to meet a lot of people who think harmonic mixing is, seriously, the ONLY thing you should worry about while spinning If that makes sense...

I like improvising the song selections in my sets, but I also want all my mixes to sound as good as possible. The key just gives me more information on whether the songs will mix well.

^^ cool track list, I just played that Holding the moth remix out a bit ago, had a really good reaction. I've got a bit of listening to do when I get some time. jonmitz posted:
I'm exactly the same, the few songs that I do mix that are melodic based are interspersed between techier songs that rely on rhythm more so than melodic hooks, so it's alot easier to create an ebb and flow with the set and really make the songs that have a melodic feel stand out and make a mark with the listener. Harmonic mixing is bit of a waste of time. To each their own though and I've tried it, it just seemed really forced for me and stifled my creativity a poo poo load. Also for anyone that is interested created this set a couple of days ago: quote:Kultrun - Ten Times link here Starts housier and gets a little bit head loving at the end. That I:cube track is so good it should be illegal. come closer im a goon fucked around with this message at 13:02 on Jan 8, 2009 |
