Here is the latest AV gear installed in my home office. A 1962 SABA 300 Stereo Automatic 11 radio with the optional Stereo Multiplexer. (Schwarzwalder Apparate Bau Anstalt, or Black Forest Equipment Building Concern.). Purchased by my parents the year before I was born (1964). It sat dead, turned on its side in my Father's closet for a good fifteen years before I asked for it a couple of months ago. Since he gave it to me I have had it repaired at a local place that specialises in the work. I have about $150 into it now not including the various polishes and cleaners that I have purchased but not started to use yet. It really sounds fantastic! It is a twelve tube radio with a thirteenth tube dedicated to a visual display of the radio signal strength. It has two 7" x 9 1/2" speakers and two 4 1/2" x 6 3/4" speakers with a total power output of 8 watts undistorted (mono) and 4 watts undistorted (stereo). It also has a mechanical automatic fine tuner that is really cool to watch, use the left and right tune buttons to get near the station you want to listen to and the radio will lock in and continously adjust the tuning to get the greatest signal strength! It receives signals in the American AM, FM, Marine and Shortwave spectrum. I have also had made up a mini-stereo to DIN cable that gets plugged into the tape input on the unit and I feed it the line out of my old iPod dock. I love the mix of old and new technologies in play here! I have a second identical unit that I got from my Uncle's estate that is at the repair place (https://www.radiodaze.com) waiting patiently for me to allocate some more funds for the repair service. The radio on top is a 1946 Philco 46-420 six-tube tadio know affectionately as "The Hippo". It too has been recently repaired and refurbished.

I'd love to find something like that to listen to my sports radio with...nothing like those old 'systems', they can pull in the AM 10x better than modern stuff that was made for FM. Don Lapre...looks clean, how do you like the sound bar? I'll post pictues of mine after I get it all cleaned up in the next couple of weeks...preview is: HK AVR 354 (I really like the iPod dock) Philips 47" LCD w/Ambilight (my wife wanted it, I like it!) Dish (probably switching to Direct soon, I want MLB) Cheap rear end Philips DVD recorder (I'll end up w/blu-ray after taxes are paid, might be a few months) Energy C-100 fronts, C-50 center, C-50 Rears w/Firedog wireless, works pretty good, worth the $100 I paid for it, wires can't be done to the rear, really... Mac Mini HTPC w/1TB firewire drive, Logitech diNovo Edge for Mac keyboard (simply awesome and beautiful). + a IR extender that works pretty good

Acc-Risk posted:I wanted to repost since I've changed a few things. First and foremost, I took delivery of my B&W 805S's yesterday. I really liked my old 705's but the difference between the two is astounding. Can you tell me how the 805S's actually compare? I've currently got some 601 S2s and some CDM7 SE speakers and am looking at the 805S.. haven't given them a good audition but I have the opportunity to get some at a decent price secondhand (I think? How much did they set you back?). Always loved the older 800 series. Amp which will be upgraded soon is an old Sansui AU-417 and the source is a Marantz DV-8300 for my CDs and SACDs, ASUS Xonar D2X for the PC (at this stage).

Funny you should say that. I actually am listening to a set of 601's as I type this. Great speaker. Now comparing the 705 and 805s. The 705 is definitely brighter, but the 805 is smoother. That's really a good word for it. Smooth. Punchy as well. The low end is noticably more defined. Even in my listening space which is way less than ideal, I'm blown away every time I listen. Don't get me wrong, I love the 700 series, and I would certainly buy them again. But the 800 series really is something else. I see now why people hold on to them and only let go to move up in the product line. If you get the chance to listen to a set, do. I paid right at $2200 including stands. I see them fly for less tho but you have to act quick (Audiogon, Ebay, etc.) I boght mine sight unseen after hearing a set of 804's. Normally I would want to audition something in that price range but I took a chance and was not disappointed.

I'm putting my modest home theater together piece by piece here. Things are starting to come together so I thought I'd post a pic in progress. We finished painting several weeks ago and the carpet went in a couple weeks ago. I just ordered and received the center channel stand, a Lovan M2 and the rack, a Lovan Affiniti 4. The AVR is an Onkyo 805 that I've had for about 6 months now. I really like it a lot. The speakers are Onix Rockets from AV123 - RS750 Signature mains (discontinued) and RSC 200 Signature center. I picked all of them up on the secondary market when I found an above average deal on them. I've been watching AV boards for them to come up for sale used for months. The screen is a Carada Criterion 100" screen. I picked it up on the secondary market as well for $200 plus ship. I couldn't pass that one up. I don't have a projector to shoot at it yet, and it's killing me. I think an Epson 6500UB is in my future, probably within the next couple of months. Right now I have an APC H15 power conditioner on the way that I picked up on Ebay and just this evening I found a great deal on an MFW-15 subwoofer. The sub is in great shape, there are reports of amp problems in that line so I hope that I can avoid that whole mess, but we'll see. Future plans are to add a Blu-ray player of some sort and probably an Emotiva XPA-3 as front channel outboard amplification.

HAHAHA nice. I couldn't tell it wasn't centered when standing in the room but when I looked at the picture it was obvious. It has been corrected. I have one MFW-15 on the way but I think I'm going to set it up near field. It'll be in the corner just a few feet behind where I was standing to take the picture. It's not a very big room so I think one should do it for now.

Sorry for the crappy cellphone pic but I just got this up and running. I still have to actually wire the receiver and the speakers and then its pretty much done. I'll post better pictures when its all done. Whats visible. Panasonic TH-50PX70U on the wall, 22" Acer x223w in the center, and samsung 206bw's on the sides. Speakers on the wall are part of an Onkyo HTIB but the model number eludes me. Retailed for about $900 when I got them about a year an a half ago and were a pretty good place to start my sound while I'm still in school. Click here for the full 1600x1200 image. Looking a little better now with the Wal-Mart strip out of the picture. Looks like there's a couple of new additions! MFW-15 APC H15 (originally silver, painted black) The sub is going to go into the rear corner right next to where I was sitting to take the original picture. I'm interested to see how this thing performs but I won't have a cable here until Monday.

The room is so oddly shaped that they really are central. From the angle I'm taking pictures from you guys are seeing the rest of the ceiling over toward the soffit. If I took pictures back toward the seating area you'd see that the lighting is centered. At just less than 10' wide it's just an awkward room altogether. I wish I could change it but the furnace is just to the left of the angle the photos are taken at. I looked into relocating it since it's forced air but it would've been $5K alone.

I took the plunge a week-and-a-half ago, and splashed out on a proper receiver and speakers, to complement my Bravia 40X350A. I got a proper stand for the TV, too, so it looks pretty neat with the 360, PS3 and receiver. Soon to be added is a WD TV, for playing back my digital media. Receiver is a Yamaha RXV-863, powering a set of Sonor Audio (local company) HT-M speakers. No sub in the package, since the mains are tuned for excellent low-frequency response. After this weekend's test run at... questionable volume levels, I'm pretty convinced I won't need a sub, at least not while I'm in my current apartment. Now if only my god drat HDMI cables would arrive, so I can connect everything up and tie up my cabling, I'd be happier. After that I just need to get speaker stands for the surrounds. Any ideas on what to avoid (as far as material/construction goes)?

Is putting your components in an enclosed space (Xbox 360, HTPC, etc) generally considered a bad idea? I'm trying to look for a decent tv stand, but I cannot seem to get what I am looking for unless most of the components are behind glass. Will the remote signals even go through the glass? I'd like a little storage in the TV stand- I don't really prefer the totally open-air stands. Also, whats a common height people put their tvs at? Middle of the screen at eye level or slightly higher? I'd be about 10 feet from my TV (46 inches). Siroc fucked around with this message at 19:44 on Apr 20, 2009 |

Just keep some clearance around your gear so air can circulate and don't pack cables around them. These components don't need datacenter cooling, just a bit of space. Remote signals shouldn't be a problem at all.

There is a difference between a 200 dollar sub and a 600+ dollar sub doing sub 15hz. I have a sub to add a bit of boom, but when you start going really low on the frequency range it would feel like a small earthquake to the people around you no matter the building. Hell we can't even crank up the sub that loud at my friends house since they can hear/feel it in the house next to them(we are talking about a subwoofer the size of a large end table). It's just a completely different thing. You don't even hear it as much as you feel it at that point. I cant imagine any apartment being well proofed enough to prevent a sustained 10hz from shaking your neighbors.

It is one of those things you never realized you wanted till you experience it. Cheap subs tend to have "boomy" bass, a very audible low end. Really low sounds are pretty much felt. In games and movies it is that sub 15hz that causes everything to rattle in a quiet scene. It is the low shacking of a thunderstorm in the distance; you don't hear it, you FEEL it. That is also why you pretty much have to own a house to have one. it penetrates everything.
