I love the AVGN (formerly the ANN - angry nintendo nerd).

I first saw him back in 2005 or 2006 when I saw the Simon's Quest review and it was hilarious.

I loved the game and have fond memories of a lot of the games he makes fun of but so does he - his bitchathons are about all the lame poo poo we used to put up with

Oh God, I remember about hearing about Plumbers Don't Wear Ties years ago (well, just the title anyways). I figured it was another lovely, forgettable, early '90s FMV game. But it's not even that, it's a slideshow with all the interactivity of a DVD menu screen (as the AVGN mentioned). Good Lord, it's like I just witnessed the "Manos: The Hands of Fate" of video games.

I've seen every AVGN video since the beginning and that was the only time I felt pain watching a game being played.

I've been a fan of his stuff for a couple years now (I discovered him by accident on YouTube) and I think this is, by a long shot, the worst game he's ever reviewed. It almost seemed like some kind of joke or something. I honestly don't know what to think of that game. The other games he's reviewed at least looked like games, but this one... I have no idea. :psyduck:

It would have been great if there was some sort of indicator on how long those cutscenes were, since he mentioned he wasn't showing the entire thing.

It's amazing that we're getting a consistent stream of new videos though, that I'm sure I'm taking it for granted. My God, sometimes it would be MONTHS before a new video.

I remember seeing this on ThatGuyWithTheGlasses this week. Strange that both of them would choose the same thing. They referred to it as a "porno game," which is extremely misleading- it's barely pornographic and barely a game. (I know Handsome Tom [and 8-Bit Mickey] are just TGWTG affiliates, of course, but it's kind of ironic, given that the mock feud between the Nostalgia Critic and the Nerd- which has led to some great joint videos- started when both of them did a review of The Wizard close to each other.)

Plumbers Don't Wear Ties

That "someone" was our very own DocFuture/Robotnik DDS. This was a side-thing of his brilliant Sega Saturn Let's Play.

At one point, the Nerd accidentially calls John and Jane "Jon and Kate." I'm not surprised, as nobody cares about these two.

Also, I have to point out the rating says "Guidance for 17 and under." Which means discretion for under-17, okay for 18 and up. Kinda the same thing as the MPAA's NC-17.

And yes, as much of a mindfuck as Plumbers Don't Wear Ties is, it has absolutely nothing on the vaporware game known as Duelin' Firemen.

http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2007/04/duelin_fireman_all_you_ever_wa.php

quote:

Here's the wisdom of the original MeFi post: "Duelin' Firemen was originally conceived as a 3DO game. According to this old subgenius post (Rev. Ivan Stang was apparently part of the cast), it was slated to be completed in July of 1995. It never saw the light of day. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), some of the game's video sequences survive, edited together in all their seizure-inducing glory [YouTube link]."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm-WoGwRmUw

As I recall from an old GamePro article, the plot of the game involved Air Force One crashing into the equivalent of the Sears Tower, causing most of the city of Chicago to catch on fire. Your objective, as a fireman, is to go into the buildings that are not on fire and perform a dance routine there. But watch out for rival firemen, because you'll have a dance-off if you encounter them in the same building. Supposedly you win by getting signed by a Japanese record company.

Take a guess as to why this would not fly today (no pun intended).

You can't compare the two. Duelin' Firemen's intro alone is awesome and infinitely better than that piece of AVGN just played. Also, I thought I heard the point of the game was to entertain people who were going to die.

One of the Nerd/Critic joint ventures was each of them taking on each other's forte- Nerd doing a bad movie, Critic doing a bad game. The Critic did Bebe's Kids (complete with Kyle Justin doing a new version of the AVGN theme song), and the Nerd did a bizarre Rocky spoof that appears to want to be an Airplane!-style farce called Ricky 1. Given that, I'd doubt they'd redo it, but you never know.

I just pulled a random screenshot I thought was funny looking. I actually think he was fairly reserved in this video. It was more, "what the hell is this?" rather than "Fuckballs! Diarrhea coming out my rear end is better than this!" Also, acting aside, he's generally comfortable in front of the camera and I think this is usually reliably good. If he were to spend more time getting all the mannerisms and facial expressions perfect, we wouldn't have a new video every 2 weeks. Personally, I'd rather have more content, then significantly less, slightly better content. I got an education in the 3D0 in a fairly amusing way, and I appreciate that. For someone who has time to kill, this is definitely something I'd recommend.

Honestly, as a kid, I never understood this level of anger. The only time I ever got upset was when I was cheated something outside of the game, like a game freeze or losing power after playing for 2 or 3 hours. I never got upset over not making a jump or dying against a tough boss and yes, I've played Ninja Turtles 1.

I can remember very discret instances of anger. One was raising a few levels over a couple of hours in Dragon Warrior and then on my way back to save, getting jumped by something that put you to sleep and then slowly raped you. Also, getting killed in Zelda since going all the way back always sucked depending on where you were. loving up carrier landings in Top Gun also pissed me off because you would go through a level perfectly and then die to something so loving stupid. There were sometime anger that would stun-lock me to the point where I was reduced to giving the tv the bird for ten minutes.

Really? "Angry video game nerd" tries to appeal to nerds? Also you were naive enough to think his reactions were "real time", while he was recording the video? It is an act, and a drat successful one at that (million+ views on every episode, who else sports such numbers?). At least he's consistent, unlike Yahtzee who's a total hit/miss.

...I think you missed my point.

While I am fully aware that it's an act, it's a poor one. It all feels like he took pieces of stuff that would specifically sell, and slapped 'em together into the same kind of explotative humor that most other times, nerds will violently rebel against, like anything on G4.

Wacky facial expressions plus overblown amounts of cursing and infantile humor plus "look how wacky this game was"...

I'm talking about his acting skill being lovely, his facial expressions being overdramatic and lame, his cursing not following any mental flow, and his criticisms of games more often than not specifically trying to either be "lol super wacky like monkey cheese OMFG buffalo!" or super edgy.

But then, I dared to smear the AVGN in some way so I'd better go back to Yahtzee and his stupid "talk fast and anything's funny", right?

We must not be watching the same videos, as I think his criticisms are great. He can pinpoint exactly what's wrong/annoying about something better than anyone else I've seen. You're getting too hung up on the goofy stuff and not actually listening what he's saying about the games.

Just watch some of his movie reviews, he's a very good critic.
