He's gonna take you back to the past... Whether watching him as a guilty pleasure or hating his guts there is no doubt if you have been on the internet and are a fan of games you have heard of the Angry Video Game Nerd. This thread is for discussion of the Angry Video Game Nerd; why do you hate him? Why do you love him? Why are you indifferent to him? His work contains some explicit language however the website that hosts his videos is clean. For those that aren't familiar with his work, he reviews crappy old video games in his own unique style that is entertaining beyond belief. You can find his work in these places... Where to watch: Official Page of the 'Nerd: http://www.cinemassacre.com/new/?page_id=13 Youtube Profile (Only for older videos): http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=771AA9FA1D647C4A Gametrailers (New videos a'hoy!): http://www.gametrailers.com/screwattack Wikipedia also has an episode list complete with a link to each video: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avgn#Episodes For those that are familiar with his work – discuss! What are your favourites and why? How did you find the AVGN? What would you like him to review next? Even though most are ashamed to admit it I honestly think AVGN is awesome. I always look forward to his videos. If you're new to his work try and watch them from start to finish as there are a number of inside jokes that are simply hilarious! Some of my personal favourites are Friday the 13th, Power Glove, the Ghostbusters trilogy and Dick Tracy. Okay AVGN fans new and old... go for it.

I've always liked him simply because I respect how into gaming he seems. He has a collection that can make most gamers feel more than a little bit inadequate, and he seems to genuinely enjoy what he does. His original videos were great (Simon's Quest, Friday the 13th, etc) but I felt like the more over the top they got over time, the more they suffered in quality. It's nice to see him reverting back to the norm a bit more with his reviews of stuff like Battletoads and Dick Tracy, and I love the actual multi-part console reviews.

His videos seem to get worse and worse as they get released. He's never been funny, really, but at least his videos were entertaining enough to watch and see him describe in detail a game that was made before I was even born and whatnot, and it was informative. Now his videos are all "rear end poo poo gently caress oval office motherfucker" and seem to aim towards the 13 year old crowds. As well as always having some stupid, lovely part in the video where he totally abandons the 'game' itself and makes us watch his elite video editing skills as he does battle with some 3D animated object of some kind for 10 minutes. As soon as I watched that one episode he did, where he flapped his hands like a chicken and went "ffffuuuck gently caress gently caress gently caress gently caress fffffuuuck gently caress gently caress!" that I was basically feeling retarded for watching his show. I love this guy... I genuinely find him funny. There's a lot of comedy in ripping on lovely old NES games and pointing out how stupid some of the design choices were back then. Plus I have a soft spot for profanity.

In my opinion, he reinforces a frankly unhealthy and demeaning stereotype of the modern gamer. It's vaguely reminiscent of those old minstrel shows where actors would put on blackface and fill the then-popular stereotype of black people as stupid/lazy/clumsy/etc.

How does he reinforce anything stereotypical of a modern gamer when he's (or his character) not a modern gamer? I think his stuff is more aimed at gamers than the kind of people who would buy into a stereotype.

He always delivers when it comes to actual presentation of the game and gives genuinely appropiate commentary, without using dumb gimmicks like 'talking really fast'.

I would agree with you on the console reviews, which he does an excellent job with. (See the 3 part CDI review or Jaguar review) As far as his game reviews though, some do rely purely on gimmick. Look at the Bugs Bunny video to see what I mean. I'm glad to see that he's been cutting down on that recently.

He's funny occasionally but I don't enjoy it when he tries to do a "story" in his videos where something happens or a video game character makes a special appearance or something dumb like that. When he's pointing out flaws in lovely games though, that's allright. Oh yeah and the hardware episodes are good, like people said already.

Blimey he's still going? I didn't realise. He's ok I guess, I tend to enjoy his actual opinion of the games themselves. Gets a bit boring when you have to watch him running around his house dressed up or whatever though.

When he does the videos where he goes on about video game history and gets more console specific he's at the top of his game. The Sega CD and Sega 32X are two of my favorite videos. Some of the more gimmicky videos can get a little grating, but I still watch them.

He's very funny. I always look forward to seeing a new video of his every other week. My favorites are the Power Glove, Ghostbusters, Dragon's Lair, Silver Surfer, Dick Tracy, and Atari Porn. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the CD-I games, the Bible games, and Milon's Secret Castle were all hilarious too. Then you have some videos that aren't funny, and aren't meant to be funny, but are still fun to watch for the sake of nostalgia. Such as Nintendo Power That one brought back a lot of memories.

He's a lot better at what he does than most of the YouTube generation; no doubt a combo of his film production degree and good old creativity and effort. (And the contributions of Mike and Kyle.) Wish he could more videos produced on a faster scale than once every two weeks at the earliest, but them's the breaks for quality. I'm finding that Nostalgia Critic (who I leanred of through the feud last year) fills the void, though Doug's character is not quite as funny or polished as James' Also, anyone else do a turnaround of opinion on the other characters besdies the Nerd? I thought having "guests" in the videos was a rocky proposition (the poo poo Pickle and Spider-Man ones are among my least favored videos that he's done), but I got converted after the Bugs Bunny one - only topped last year by the dead-on-pefect ending of the Batman/Joker videos.

"I've been playing this game for almost TWENTY loving years, and I still can't get pass the first stage! So why am I still trying?! I don't know, I'm just a sucker for Dick Tracy. A sucker for dick? That didn't sound good. I'm gonna tell you right now that anybody would have given up on this game had it not been for the name. They made one of the most frustrating games of all time and they took the name Dick Tracy and slapped it on the cover. Just like slapping their own greedy dick. Well if this game is Dick, then we were the balls." AVGN is great. I also like that review he did of some old crappy system where he spent the whole video trying to set it up. And then finally at the end, the controller didn't work.

I enjoy his reviews. His best stuff, to me, are his Bible Games videos. They're hilarious. His hardware videos are pretty good too. I groan a bit when he does his ancillary character bits, because it's either really funny, or really embarrassing to watch. His Halloween reviews are the best when it comes to this aspect, with the Wizard of Oz being the absolute worst. I would prefer he didn't do it at all, but whatever. It's a fun way to kill a few minutes, and when there's a new video of his, I usually catch it. It's mindless fun.

I think he's funny and the videos he makes are great. It would be pretty cool to see him review some old school PC game, and possibly even games from the PS/N64 era.

I like AVGN, but not because he's hilarious. I get a couple laughs out of his videos, but I really like him because he's pretty informative. I've learned a lot about the history of video games from his videos and that's the main reason I watch them. His old ones were definitely a lot better, that's for sure. He's definitely a collector, and I enjoy seeing all of the old video games he's amassed, but I heard him say one thing that's always stuck with me and tainted my view of him. A month or so ago he did a segment on XM Radio for some show, I don't know which one, and they were taking callers from fans. Basically some idiot called up asking him if he's ever played Banjo Kazooie on the N64, saying it was a piece of poo poo game. Turns out AVGN has never played it, just simply never played the game and just kinda brushed it off. I know it sound silly for criticizing the guy for not playing a single game when he has so many, but how the gently caress does a guy like him not have played Banjo Kazooie. It's seriously one of the most popular games on the system, and arguably one of the best. Regardless, I still like his stuff and I'll keep watching. At least he's better than Irate Gamer.

If you ask me, he have completely jumped the shark. He was funny in the beginning, when he just sat down, played a game, told how the audience how horrible he trought the game was, and afterwards threw out little bits of trivia about old video games. Simple, but it worked. Then he began to fancie himself an instructor, started to make up all kinds of stupid gimmicks, special effects and characters, and it all went downhill from there.

I like him well enough, but I agree that his "story" type segments are sort of a drag. I love his console and peripheral reviews. (Power Glove video) The look on his face when he lands on the carrier in Top Gun using the Power Glove is probably my favorite moment.

When he actually talks about games he's interesting. Not really funny most of the time, but interesting. He's not too great when he's doing stupid gimmicks, though. This still puts him a step above Yahtzee, who isn't interesting even when he does talk about games.

When he's not delving into the bottom level of toilet humour (taking a simulated crap on a console was painful to watch), I find him funny. The guests more often than not annoy me, because then he goes into some unfunny schtick involving something getting shitted on, and I don't want to see that. My absolute favourite review has to be of the Atari 5200, because he uses Gangplank Galleon as BGM, and the moment he holds up the Trackball controller.
