Here is a mix I finished up recently that I'm going to try to use (after some clean-up, and another run from start to finish to fix some of the beatmatching) to promote myself. Genres: Well, house/electro mainly with a huge pop vibe, lyrically. Link: http://soundcloud.com/automattic/automattic-promo-mix Tracklist: Intro Yung Joc - Going Down (lobsterdust remix) Miami Sound Machine vs Pitbull - Ay Chico in Miami (DJ Digital Dave Remix) Stanton Warriors ft. Twista - Pop Ya Cork David Guetta ft. Akon - Sexy Bitch Busta Rhymes - Dont Touch Me (Bird Peterson Mix) Jodeci - Freek N You (DJ Brrapscallion + Carlton L Bruce Mix) Flo Rida - Wheres Your Right Round Head (Unknown Mix) Earth Wind and Fire - Lets Groove (Nathan Vice Mix) Michael Jackson - I Want You Back (Chew Fu Big Room Fix) Paradiso Girls - Patron Tequila (Risk One Bounce Mix) Calvertron Vs Banga Vs Dr Dre - Like Dat Like This(LunyP Bootleg) The BucketHeads Vs Pittbull - I Know You Want To Bomb Me (DJ Tripp Mix) Ace of Base - All That She Wants (The Disco Villains Remix) Take a listen and let me know what you think, I want to try to get myself out there, and I feel like a hardcore house/techno/whatever set with nothing recognizable by the average joe wouldnt fly here, so I tried my best to mix both together.

Hey guys new to the thread, usually hang around AI. where I host some of my mini mixes. http://philkop.tumblr.com/ Also i feel i need to vent. So I've been trying really hard to start djing and looking for some gigs, maybe house partys and stuff. This kid i know who wants to dj too got use of a whole club for a night. He only brought 15 people too. Now hes a nice kid and all, but he doesn't even attempt to dj. He plays the same songs every lame party he plays at, its all like old trance stuff from the 90s but with really weird singing too. And he doesn't even mix the songs, he seriously, in the club he had to himself just faded into another song, not even on the right tempo or key or anything. Just one song, and then cjagdsjhvcgdsakvckahjdsbk noise, then another song. Ugh that makes me so mad. Not saying im the best or anything but i at least attempt to mix and choose a good set. Why should he get that kind of opportunity >> makes me so mad.

You could be the best dj in the world but if the only other person who knows that is your mom or your roommate you wont get gigs. People get them based almost entirely off networking and connections, not skill (although if you're actually good and have connections, all the better). Basically trying to say he's not just been lucky as you're trying to imply, you gotta work to get yourself out there. Also to be honest your general audience doesn't give a poo poo at all about your mixing compared to your song selection. You do a sloppy transition and less than thirty seconds later no one will have remembered at all JimmyJazz fucked around with this message at 20:53 on Sep 6, 2009 |

just to put this in perspective, 1.5 years ago i had one residency and was only playing once a month. this month I play every friday/saturday. I also am going to be playing every Thurs/Fri/Sat through the winter thats to new residencies. I also may as much DJing those three days as i do at my stuffy office day job. the trick for me was to HUSTLE like crazy. meet other DJs get a small crew going, and just talk to bar owners. dont expect to get anything prime-time right away, but go in prepared, go in confident, and preferably with a partner (having someone to play off of helps). If this keeps up, by this time next year I'm ONLY going to be DJing. no more day job for me

Going to ditto Threatis and Jimmyjazz. Also, promoters and club owners want free labor more than anything else, so do a little time to help build a good scene or event by promoting shows for a club/promoter, and you'll be in the door guaranteed. Club owners, promoters, booking agencies, and labels all have one thing in common, they want someone willing to put in the time necessary to do what it takes promote themselves and the scene around them. If you think you are more deserving than every other DJ in town, guess again, because that attitude will make you fall flat on your face. Even if you are talented, respect given is respect earned, and sometimes that's worth more than cash. Also, be responsive and adaptable to the crowd. Sometimes planning out mixes in advance can work to your advantage, other times your super inspirational post-bop/polka/IDM mix will suck balls to the folks that just want to dance and have a good time. Basically, take poo poo seriously!

I'm not even really a DJ but this dude let me "spin" some poo poo at a bar down at the beach a few times. I told him I didn't mind doing it for gas + drinks since I am basically a n00b, but he ended up promising me $400. He never paid me, it was worse than just agreeing to do it for free...

Socket Ryanist posted:Even at burning man? It depends on the genre, too. Like I only threw free parties (about 3 dozen of them), and all the djs were cool with it. They were just happy to play weird music and have people vibe of it. We owned a PA, so it wasn't really much trouble for us to throw a party; kids would bring us bottles and offer us drugs. It felt relatively reciprical. Sure, it wasn't 1:1, but we loved the kids and they were down for us, so we were happy to put on parties. But that kinda poo poo doesn't work if you want more than 200 people to come out to your poo poo, or if you wanna play in a club, not in someone's house. Its all about your philosophy. Some kids are hustlin, some kids are just out for the vibes.

if you're playing some niche poo poo, yeah. go nuts. play for free because the chances of you making money is low. if you're playing straight up house, hip hop, and other styles of club music. there is ZERO reason to play for free. I think the main point is that i dont play a ton of EDM, i play hip hop and bmore so i can actually get into the big clubs around here.

I don't know if it's really a niche/mainstream divide. The bay area is drowning in electro house DJs right now--getting a paid gig spinning hipster stuff is downright impossible. On the other hand, I know these two guys who are pretty much the only good gabber DJs in the bay area and they get paid bookings all the time because in order to compete with them you would have to spend thousands of dollars getting vinyl shipped from the netherlands.

So lets start right from the beginning. I'm at the ground floor right now, or even below it if thats possible. I'm at the stage where I can mix most anything together assuming the tempos arent way out of wack, and I have a good (in my mind) promo mix of things that sound good together. Where the hell do I go to find other DJ's in my situation who want to hook up and figure poo poo out? Whats the best way to get my name out there, and get people interested in me? The oddest part of this whole thing is that I'm not really a clubber, and I havent been since I was in high-school. I'm just a guy who loves dance music, loves to mix it, and wants to impose it upon other peoples ears. Am I screwed because I'm not in touch with "the scene" here? Here being Milwaukee.

Phat_Albert posted:So lets start right from the beginning. Why would you want to find other DJs in your situation? Find DJs in a better situation and have them bring you up to their level (as far as name recognition etc) quote:Am I screwed because I'm not in touch with "the scene" here? Here being Milwaukee. I will say yes. Why aren't you in touch? You probably have to go out a little to everyone's parties before they book you.
