Hey guys, let me preface this by saying I am straight up not ready for a dog yet, but I'm doing my research because it's come up and I'm curious. Are any of you in PA, specifically east / northeast? I really have only found one breeder that I trust, which makes sense with this being PA and all. They are http://www.ezbrook.com. Which seems alright, actually they seem fantastic. My only gripe is I really want a Corgi with some black/dark brown markings. But whatever, was just curious if anyone had any good word from PA. I found some pups on http://www.greenfieldpuppies.com but they are so obviously a broker. EDIT: I just re-read this and holy poo poo I channeled a 15 year old girl. I would start with these sites: Pembroke Welsh Corgis of America Cardigan Welsh Corgis of America Although it's not a guarantee, I think you find more responsible breeders on these lists. The drawback is that you may have to wait a while and you might have to be on a waiting list. Also you may not be able to pick what color you want since most responsible breeders will pair you with the right personality, not color.

Corgi goons, I require your aid. My 5 year old Corgi has this odd quirk the last few months. Out of the blue when petting him, calling his name or giving him attention, he'll start to growl at either me or my girlfriend. He continues growling, walks off in a sort of arrogant/pissed off manner. 5 minutes later, and everything is OK and he'll actually try to apologize by being really nice and giving kisses and whatnot. Its pretty random in behaviour. Might happen once every two weeks, or twice a a day. Anyone have any ideas? I also apologize for any spelling errors in advance, as English is not my main language. Blame the Dutch clogs I suppose. *EDIT* Just happend again. He's lying here at my feet at the computer. I call his name, he growls and walks off. It's pretty odd. Also, for information, he's never bitten anyone or even snapped at me or someone else. He also loves to cuddle, still eats and drinks, and I cant find anything wrong with him other then the random growling. In return for your help, Corgi pictures. Perhaps he's hearing something? Mine tends to growl whenever he senses the presence of a person or another dog outside my condo. Is he walking off towards a window or door or something? Although he picked the growling up from another dog, he used to just woof at strange sounds/smells.

Good morning everyone -- PI newb here... Anachrodragon stopped by my horrific Christmas Corgi Thread and suggested I post a photo here, so here is my 4-month-old little Corgi friend: Can anyone kindly give me some suggestions on a name for our pup? We have a few names we are tossing around, but her first vet appointment is today and we'd like to have one by then: - Pilar (Larry's mom from The Big Lebowski) - Penelope (but we hate the nickname "Penny") - Clementine (Clem for short)

amishsexpot posted:Good morning everyone -- PI newb here... Awww very cute! I've always liked Welsh names for Corgis, but that's just me. The first Corgi I knew was a retired show Cardigan named Morgana. She belonged to a childhood family friend, and she was a really sweet girl who took delight in herding children. Everyone called her "Morgi Corgi". Are you and your friend going to co-own this dog? If so, I'd suggest working some things out beforehand, like who's going to pay for unexpected vet expenses, etc... I know you said in your other thread that the dog's breeder was shady, so you (or your friend) may want to have some money set aside for future problems. Corgis are a decently healthy breed, but with a bad breeder you could be looking at hip problems or something in the future.

We took our little 4-month pup to the vet yesterday and she was fantastic! Though she barked at a few dogs, she didn't have any accidents and let the vet check her out thoroughly. Then... she got the rabies shot... She didn't even flinch -- I'm not sure if she even felt it -- but suddenly I felt tears running down MY face! It's crazy what having a little puppy will do to ya. The vet needed a name for the pup so I panicked and wrote down "Pilar Penelope Bean Clementine," but now we're considering the name "Pernil" (the name of a Puerto Rican roast pork dish) -- essentially like naming a dog the Spanish equivalent of "Pork Chop." But to prevent much confusion, we all pretty much call her "Beanie" and she seems to like it. We're feeing her "Holistic Health Extension Small Bites" food... anyone know anything about this brand? Seems to be made in the USA with no recalls that I can find... no wheat or corn or soy, and she seems to like it.

This thread has convinced me that when I finally have my dream of a bunch of acres and a bunch of sheep, that cardigan corgis will be the dogs i have to herd them. They're natural herders, right? In that they'll take to it like ducks to water with only a bit of training? I want one so bad now. gently caress living someplace that would be absolutely horrible for any living animal, a dog in particular.

Both Cardigans and Pembrokes are herding dogs, and should have the potential for herding instinct. You'd want to make sure you look for a reputable breeder who has some experience with working dogs, as I'm sure herding drive can vary by dog, a good breeder should know what to look for. You'll definitely have some research to do when the time comes. I hope you get your acres and sheep and Cardigans some day.

Hm, as it turns out, apparently conventional wisdom says not to use herding dogs for alpacas. I suppose it's gaurd llamas for me! ETA: One of the farms near me appears to have Maremmas as guard dogs, but again, no herding.

I would imagine that an alpaca would kick a corgi to death without so much as batting an eyelash if the dog tried to herd it, given what I have seen about their personalities. We had some distant neighbors when I was growing up that had alpacas, and they had a Pyr out with them, but no herders. I gathered that they "herded" the alpacas by shaking a grain bucket near where they wanted them to go and then got out of the way.

I don't know a lot about canine genetics, but I think there was an article last year stating that all short legged dogs share the same genetic mutation. I thought that was pretty interesting. I guess there are quite a few short legged breeds out there, of which Dachshunds and Corgis are probably the most common. Since of the two, Corgis have upright ears, I'd probably guess there's some Corgi there. Also Corgis can carry a recessive gene for "fluff" (extra furry coats). But really who knows what his mix is? What's his personality like? Does he act like a herding dog? shady anachronism fucked around with this message at 22:32 on Jan 7, 2010 |
