I have a similar story about my oldest brother taking me to try Mario 64 for the first time at Wal-Mart like a week or two before we got our N64. Yeah. I remember seeing Mario 64 for the first time at a Toys R Us. I ran around the store until I found my Dad and brought him to look at how amazing it was, but he just didn't get it.

I've gotten him (and my Stepmom, who plays more games than I do now) into gaming since then, so I'd like to think that if something were to make an graphical/technical advance like that anytime in the future he'd be right there along with me, mouth agape.

That Pong video is great. I also remember that box. You, literally, had to screw it in to your TV. Those were the good ol' days of inconvenience. I'll have to look into that connector thing he showed, though. However, even my TV doesn't have coaxial any more. I should look into buying an old TV to play my older consoles on. HDTVs aren't ideal for those games.

For those interested the connector shown is an RCA to coax adapter and they're available at Radio Shack for about $5. The part number is 278-276. It's useful to know because the person working there will probably be too young to know what you're talking about. If your TV doesn't have coax input it's still possible to play older systems on it but it's going to take some effort and if you're really interested in playing old games it's best to have an old TV. They can commonly be found on craigslist or the want ads for free/cheap.

You can get a coax-to-RCA converter box at Radio Shack for like 10 bucks. This is how I still play Atari on modern TVs

I still have a couple of the manual RF switch boxes used in a lot of old video game consoles to connect my Atari/Colecovision/etc. My TVs don't have inputs for twin-leads, but I have a few of those old 300-to-75 ohm converters that allow connection to a coax. I always assumed those were pretty common, and was suprised that it was absent in that video. Now that I think about it, do they even make those anymore? I can't seem to find it on the Radio Shack website.

Yea, I enjoyed FFX too. Yea, it wasn't awesome like 4 or 6, but it was enjoyable.

Thing is, everything that was bad about it has been said a million times. The thing about the nerd when he bashed a bad old game, is that most of them have been forgotten and the internet didn't exist to everyone couldn't voice their opinions of the games.

I mean, he might as well release a video attacking Jar Jar.

I finally got around to watching the Beta vid. When I was a kid, my dad bought a beta player, and we had one until I was at least 12 years old. So pretty much for the entire 80s that's all we had. Not that it was a problem because beta tapes were still around and my uncle was a videophile, so he could give me star wars and indiana jones on beta tape. Even in the 90s I used the beta player to record rented videos for myself, or when someone in high school got their hands on porn, I could make a copy for myself.

Those weird little switches on the front of the beta player had something to do with setting the channels that the buttons would be set to. So you could set one up to be NBC, ABC, CBS, CTV, CBC and the local station.

Holy crap, CEDs are insane.

I didn't care for Final Fantasy X myself. I liked the grid system, I liked the flow of combat (and how you can switch out any party member on the fly), the world was pretty interesting, and the selection of summons in the game were pretty great. But I really didn't like the characters, the art design, the story was pretty ho-hum and the villain was pretty mediocre. It's one of the better modern Final Fantasy games, but I just didn't care for it.

I haven't seen Spoony's video yet, but I'll check it out sometime later on.

I didn't love or hate X, but I'm with you. The game itself was kind of forgettable to me in the grand scheme of the series, but I have a nostalgic draw to it as it was one of my first pick-ups for the PS2.

Oh dear. Why is he reviewing expansive RPG timesinks (and not even bad ones) when he could be doing more great stuff, like his Pumpkinhead's Revenge review, which is probably the best merger he could possibly do between his love of schlocky B-movies and hatred of terrible FMV games.

The Pumpkinhead review also contains his single weirdest/creepiest 'joke' ever.

I'll definitely give it a watch. I adored the FF8 review (with the exception of any and all "skits") and I hope he does X in a similar style.

Why do these reviewers continue to put horribly unfunny 'skits' in their videos? Once in a while they'll be funny (Like the Nerd's skit with the 'guest ninja' training for the game) but for the most part they are really unfunny and poorly done. The newest Spoony vid for Final Fantasy 10 is a great example. I got embarrassed for the guy and had to stop it near the beginning. The videos are always so much better when nonsense like that is cut out. And that "Doctor Insano" poo poo is the worst.

Jimbot

Because their fans find them funny or generally like them? It's not hard to understand. Just because goons don't like the skits doesn't mean they'll stop doing them. They're hit and miss with me, but if I don't like them I can either skip it or just tab out of the window and read up on something as it plays in the background.

I've enjoyed all of the Spoony skits, and felt that even the ones that weren't really hitting it for me were tolerable enough to sit through. (I've found this true of Spoony and the Nerd, other internet personalities often get cut off by me.)

However, I absolutely agree that Dr. Insano is just a dumb cliche and is more annoying than funny. He's such a major recurring character too...

Harriet Carker
Jun 2, 2009

I generally wouldn't have a problem with Dr. Insano and the like, but for whatever reason, I've noticed the Nerd, Spoony, and the Critic all drag their skits out much too long. I wouldn't mind if they popped in for a quick joke here and there, but some of the Dr. Insano sketches in the FF8 review were large portions of the episode. And as much as I love the Critic, he definitely knows how to run a joke into the ground.

Oh well, like Jimbot said, I just skip past them now.

Isn't FFX one of the more popular FFs? It certainly didn't get all the hate that 8 and 12 did. And it seems to be more well liked than 5 and 9 too.

Did Spoony ever come up with any actual points against FFX? I watched about as much of it as I can stand, felt like 10 minutes, and he was just complaining about how Tidus looked and how blitzball was unrealistic.

FMV hell and the related vids are some of my favorite. I remember playing a lot of those as a teenager, and thinking "holy poo poo this is amazing!" but eventually realizing that they were garbage. I didn't play all of them, but I do remember Phantasmagoria pretty well.

It sold very well since it was the first Final Fantasy on the PS2 but critically I think it's one of the lowest. It seems like any FF after 6 is very polarizing so it's hard to gauge which ones are really the most popular. Personally I didn't like it at all.

Remember when Famitsu's Readers Top 100 came out and FFX was #1? I just checked gamespot, and the ratings the readers gave FFX were higher than they gave FF8, FF9, and FF12. IGN's readers gave FFX higher marks than FF8 and 12, and the same score as 9.

X was a pretty popular FF. Deservedly so, I think, because it's my favorite and the only other FF that approaches it in quality is IMO FF4. Even if you didn't like it, you have to admit it's really well made. They really tried their hardest to make it a quality FF title.
