Note: this was taken with my phone and the 2nd video sounds much much worse than it is. It sounds like you can't even hear the engine in the video until it makes the messed up sound that I assume to be a rod knocking.

Changed the oil and it was glittery, but the particles were very very small. Stethoscope also sounded loudest at the oil pan, though something could have been going on in the head as well. Also I checked the compression. 197-195-197-200 from front to back. I've ruined a basically perfect engine. :(

My buddy didn't see how it could be a bearing and insisted the it has to be the lifters, until I checked out all this stuff tonight. It definitely sounds louder than a ticking lifter, at least from my experience with DSM's ticking like a bomb. Right now the route I'm thinking is pick up the 50k mile 1.8 engine in the junkyard for $350 and swap over all the Miata poo poo to it (it's from an Escort GT) and call it a day.

What all can I do to give the miata a more comfortable ride? I mean, I know it's a small roadster and that's why I bought it, but I would like if it were a little more comfortable around town. It's got about 150k miles and I haven't had it checked out so I imagine the shocks are hosed, because I can feel every single bump in the road and I can feel it hard. Will upgrading the suspension help significantly? What aftermarket options are a good choice? Is it worth upgrading the seats? I know AI may not be the best place to ask because it is an enthusiast forum, but for right now I want to get as much comfort as I can because it is fun as hell to drive, just a little rough.

Also, anything that can be done about wind noise with the top up? With the soft top up the car is noisy as poo poo around 70-80 mph. I'm guessing the only way to fix it is with a hard top?

I found it's noisier with the hardtop. (Is it because the hardtop reflects sound while the softtop absorbs it?) The car's got little to no sound deadening, so it's going to be noisy all the time.

You're fighting an uphill battle. Refreshing the suspension might help a bit if it's never been done (it'll help handling more than comfort - and at 150k it's definitely due), but the fact of the matter is that it's a very stiff little car with little to no sound deadening. All the noise and road feel are things to be embraced, not "fixed". It's a loud, stiff, communicative little car, which is why I/we love it. :)

If you're looking for smooth and quiet, you'd be better off dumping the Miata for something else. It's a losing proposition to try to turn a Miata into a GT car. It's been engineered from the ground up to be quite the opposite.

A new suspension with Fat Cat Motorsports/ISC tophats would give you a much better ride. You might want to speak with Shakih over at Fat Cat depending on how much money you want to spend. Either way, your OEM shocks are toast. What year do you have? 99-00 seats are miserable, 90-97 and 01-05 seats are pretty comparable comfort-wise. Some people put Lotus Elise seats in their cars for extra ballin points.

Wind noise? Hard top helps a bit. My smaller mirrors helped a little bit. The thing that will help the most (aside from earplugs) is buying a PRHT NC or a different car

edit: I am a bad person and use earplugs or those ear sealing earbuds in my car when I take a trip on the highway that's going to be more than a hour long

I have heard that the Flyin Miata Butterfly brace and/or frame rails help with comfort. Basically, stiffening the chassis means the suspension will better do the job it's meant to. One quote I read somewhere was "it feels like the wheelbase is 2 feet longer." It is $400 for the whole thing and installation looks unpleasant though.

I've got the braces for the frame rails but not the butterfly. I replaced my suspension at the same time so I can't comment on it. I still think the car is a bit soft up front even with the braces and a Hard Dog roll bar. (HDHCHT double diagonal)

Nah, I know. I'm not trying to make it into a touring car or anything, I knew what the car was when I bought it and that's the reason I bought it. I knew that there was stuff that could be done to make it a slightly more pleasant ride without trying to change the idea of the car though. I'll try new suspension and when I get some cash, some braces. I DD a motorcycle so I'm used to the wind noise (oh boy am I used to the wind noise) and comfort factor. My passengers aren't though.

It has a set of Proxes FZ4's on it, 195/50-15. I have no clue how many miles they have on them (I've only owned the car about ~1k miles) but they have quite a bit of tread left.

Cool, so you could always go back to stock 14" wheels with 60-series (or higher) tires for a bit more sidewall. But it's not like you're running rubber bands now.

And my current NB came with some old Michelins that had plenty of tread left, but they were starting to dry-rot and noisy as hell. Buying new tires made a huge difference, especially with the top up.

I kind of got rear-ended by a semi today. Well, it was more like a bump but it was scary as poo poo. We were both moving forward, pretty slow, and he just sort of nudged me forward. If I was going 15mph, he would've been going say 17mph. It was actually right about here:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Vernon+Hills,+Lake,+Illinois+60061&ll=42.199788,-87.931888&spn=0.002933,0.006968&t=h&z=18
...going South in the right lane, and we were going slow because shortly ahead of us the left lane merges into the right one due to never-ending construction. I feel a jolt forward, hear a thump, and see the semi tractor's right on my rear end, and he stays on it until I accelerate a bit and then stop; he also slows to a stop a ways behind me. I got out and looked at my car, but there wasn't a scratch (he can see that as well.) I ran over to the guy and yelled, "You rear-ended me!" at him (kind of a trashy-looking trucker), and he goes, "No I didn't!" Again, it's obvious there's nothing wrong with the car and he can plainly see that, and I can't prove he hit me, so I just got in my car and continued driving (to work.) I did write down his plates (Minnesota, PAK2950 in the front, 10881ST in the rear) but there's really nothing I could've done, and frankly as long as the car is ok (I'm fine too) I'm happy. I was definitely pissed at him, but after work I got to drive home with the top down (the first time in a couple weeks that's happened) so that made it all better. Once again, the car is fine, drives perfectly, and has no evidence of any impact. I can't believe it myself, but this thing is a little tank (remember, I also got a nearly-clean bill-of-health from the mechanic a few weeks ago.) I loving love this car. :)

I'm pretty much going to ignore everything I wrote in my last post because it's completely eclipsed by what just happened. I got home a short while ago after a hell of a night. After work I went to a now-former co-worker's going away party, about 14 miles away, mostly highway driving. On the way home, about 80% of the way (a different route, ~13 of ~16 miles) I see steam, smell antifreeze, and see my temperature gauge is pegged all the way to the right. I take a short detour in the opposite direction and pull into the nearest stop, which happens to be a gas station. I pop the hood, and the coolant reservoir is near empty (halfway between the "low" mark and completely empty.) I buy some 50/50 pre-diluted coolant, and fill it up (I did not wait for the engine to cool completely.) I start the car, and there is still no leak, but the coolant is not being pulled from the reservoir. The fans work.

Over the course of a couple hours, I am able to let the engine cool, drive it until the temp gauge inevitably rises, and repeat. At one point I pull off the side of the road near some houses, and the occupants who were out smoking come over to help. They were Hispanic, and my knowledge of Spanish is pretty much limited to saying that I don't speak much Spanish; we try to communicate (I'm just trying to tell them that I'm waiting for the car to cool down) and they try to take a look at the car but there's nothing to be done. While the car was off, I heard some burbling or hissing sound and saw that some of the coolant had been drawn out of the reservoir (from the "full" mark to halfway between "full" and "low.") I thought maybe the problem was resolved (wishful thinking) and start to drive again as the engine has cooled sufficiently. I have to continue creeping along and making stops in order to make it home. (I probably stopped 4-5 times.)

I had the timing belt, water pump, and radiator replaced in October at ~61-62k mi. I am at well under 67k mi.

Sooo... I'm going to bed now. The car is parked in my driveway and I'm exhausted. I did some preliminary research and found the obvious miata.net stuff:
http://www.miata.net/garage/cooling_system.html
http://www.miata.net/garage/CoolingSystemProblems.html
http://www.miata.net/garage/waterplug.html

I suppose the water pump seems the likely culprit, although it is very new. The radiator cap is another thing to take a look at, especially since I did hear that "percolator" sound as indicated in the first link (I heard it twice, but only the first time did some coolant get sucked into the system.) The water plug (3rd link) would be my next option. There's a useful Overheating section in that 2nd link, but I'm too exhausted to deal with this any further. Wish me luck tomorrow.

So, I'm in the market for a DD. Looking to spend about $2k, and I came across a few NA Miatas in that range with low to mid 100s in miles. (SF Bay Area :gay: )

I drive about 50 miles to work each way, 4 days a week. Putting that many miles on my MKIV R32 is not ideal, which is why I'm looking for a DD.

I guess my main question would be if Miatas make good DDs? I plan on doing all the maintenance myself.

I drove my NB ~60k as my only 'modern' car - aside from largely cosmetic differences, the NB and NA are very similar.

Oh god that one looked terrible to get to when I was replacing coolant hoses. I don't think I'd be able to do it without removing the intake manifold or doing it when the engine was out. I decided to say "gently caress it" and just keep the hose for later when one of those two things would happen.

I was DDing my miata in the bay area with a 50 mile round trip commute for 2 years 5 days a week with no issues. I'd just do a maintenance overhaul on it if the preview owner has no records. New radiator, belts, plugs etc.

If you don't mind the interior space and lack of storage its a great DD, especially if you drive with the top down all summer, last year I didn't have the top up a single day in 3 months strait, it was great.

I think the general consensus on the 6spd is that it's a waste. The 5/6 speed top gear ratio is the same, so the 6spd it's just extra shifting for no "cruising" gear benefit.

Might make sense on a corvette or something that's geared ultra-low to begin with, but not a miata.

The kicker is that it's listed as "green" and "limited edition" so I can only assume it's the BRG. There were no other editions whatsoever for 1991, correct?
