Some thoughts about that.

Depends on what other guy you're talking about. The other FBI agent you do missions with isn't in the final shootout where John dies. This could basically say that he didn't want to go along with it and didn't believe in Ross' philosophy with how to deal with Marston. Also, I agree - I used the Mauser and unleashed all 15 bullets on Ross.

How does it save which horse you keep? Do I just have to hitch it and whenever I whistle whichever one I last hitched will come?

I got that horse that bonnie made me chase after. The stallion where you do the first solo breaking in. Except I went into town, jumped off, went inside and then when I came out I whistled and a different horse came. So did I just lose that other one and have to break another to get one?

Also how can you tell in the wild which are the fastest horses? Or is it just better to buy one, then save him and you will always have that one?

Yeah, this horse thing is extremely confusing. I bought a deed for a new horse, and the golden horse from before (the same one described above), is it gone forever? I just read in a faq that it was one of the best horses in the game...

Also realized these were after I unlocked new towns with gunsmiths in the storyline. They're letting you know new guns are available but I don't remember the wording of the pop up if it was town specific or generic.

From what I gathered each gunsmith has different guns, so a gun is unlocked when that message pops up. Although I never really found new guns that were available during the time and I just used the same rifle the entire game. :effort:

Nah, it's just the same buggy message code that has been around since GTA3. New stuff really only unlocks after you've done the major missions for each area, i.e. usually the intro mission and the last story mission for each person.

Yeah he's there, if I remember right it pans over to him after the main guy as they're starting to walk away. He has a rifle and a long coat on.

He may not agree with it but he's still well paid.

The only thing I didn't like about the ending was how obvious and drawn out it was. The whole time I was doing the farm missions I was thinking "Ok, which one of these does poo poo go to hell in?" It would have been neat if it were just 2-3 short missions. Nope, guess I gotta herd more cattle to get the full impact of the ending.

So here's a checklist:

Do you want to play RDR? Yes [] No []
If you answered yes to both, send a friend request to WesternEuros! There's like 30 of us! Since it's not close to being full yet I'm accepting everyone who looks like a goon for the time being, but if it magically fills up I'll start prioritizing Europeans to avoid cross-Atlantic pings.

The horse you last hitched is considered your horse until it dies or you hitch another one. You can ride and steal as many others as you want; when you whistle, your horse will come, it'll be there after fast traveling, after reloading, etc.

If your last hitched horse is dead and you haven't hitched another one yet, a random level 2 horse will appear when you whistle.

When you buy a deed, you can activate it from your inventory as often as you want and a horse of that type will immediately be saved as your last hitched horse. If your current horse is already of that type, the game will say so and nothing happens. That's all the deed does, putting a horse of a particular type in your "last hitched" spot.

After beating the game and buying a newspaper, you see that Ross retired after getting a bunch of medals for wiping out Dutch van der Linde's gang, including Dutch van der Linde, Javier Escuela, Bill Williamson, and John Marston. So I'm guessing he never told any higher-ups that he was using John, and then once John helped Ross kill Dutch/Bill/Javier, he told John that he was free to return to Beecher's Hope...right where Ross could find him and kill him for another medal and probably a huge pension. He never intended to let John go free, he used him.

It is probably the poorest written part of the game because no real reason is given. There's tons to speculate on but if Ross really did want John dead he would have simply killed him and his family after Dutch was dead. Going after him later after allowing John to live his life makes no sense and deserves an explanation.

Lacking one is just plain bad writing.

Ehhhhhhhh I dunno. It adds impact, but I think they kind of killed the pacing and diminished the impact by overdoing the farm missions. The crow silo one, a hunting mission, and saving Jack from the bear could have sufficed instead of the hour or so they had us play.

There's lots of those things like that during the game that I thought "Well I suppose it's there for storytelling/gameplay but goddammit if that doesn't make any sense." Specifically, every time John would run into some cocksucker that needed to die and he'd get into a duel with him instead of immediately popping 4 bullets into their head.

I kinda agree, but I think the farm missions were really great. They build up a good sense of dread (because you know something has to be coming), allow you to bond with your videogame family :) and so on. The problem then of course is even if you do have a reason why Ross waited that long, how do you show it? A sudden shift of perspective and cutscenes of stuff that happens far away from him without his knowledge? Maybe there was some powerplay between people who thought John earned his new life and other people who thought he needs to be dealt with?

I'm not a writer though, so some clever people probably could've (or should've) come up with a way.

Edgar Ross is portrayed as the bad guy because the player can relate to John after playing as him throughout the game. Dutch along with Marston and the rest of the gang weren't good people, they killed innocents, stole from banks and tonnes of other horrible acts.

John says they did it for good reasons within the campaign but that was probably just what they felt, when to everybody else it was the opposite.

So what I'm saying is: He was probably just doing what a good person would do before having to finish the job.
