One that I've been noticing more is that I'll be riding along at nighttime and there'll be a dead body just off the side of the road. Nothing anywhere near it, no explanation, just a black X appearing on the map and some dead guy laying there. The fact that it only happens at night is actually kind of unsettling. I keep wondering if there's some shadowy beast about to leap at me from behind a rock when I stop to check the body. I like the one where 2 guys are fiddling with some explosives next to a wagon full of tnt, and then everything explodes like 30 seconds later. The first time I saw that it dawned on me just as it was too late...

I found the area to the west and southwest of the Pacific Union Railroad Camp to be swarming with beavers. Quite a few near the steamboat wreck, too. But as one who only found two boars the entire time I was in New Austin, and not a single one where they show up on the map, I know the pain of random spawns.

Had a funtastic bug yesterday. I've been all through Mexico and just entered Blackwater, but I still hadn't picked up the courage to knife two cougars. Yesterday evening I decided to finally just man up and do it. So I did. It wasn't THAT hard, after all, although I did die once during the quest (why the gently caress do those bastards always come in duos? gently caress). I unlocked the next hunting challenge, the one with 5 raccoons, foxes and skunks or whatever. Luckily, Rio Bravo where I was huntin' happened to be just teeming with those aforementioned skunks! Of course I immediately start blasting those furry little cuties to hell so I could skin 'em. Except their corpses just... disappear. Literally the second the skunk's ragdoll stops jigglin', the creature disappears. This happened to each and every one of the 20+ skunks I shot. None of the other animals were affected. The hilarity/weirdness of the bugs in this game almost rival those in Dwarf Fortress

I'm so confused about people having trouble finding beavers. Throughout playing I kept finding them along the north of the map without even trying. Is the spawn restricted or something when you get that mission?

Something about this version of the west just feels... not quite right. The game does obviously have some of Cormac McCarthy's or Robert Howard's darker, weirder West to it. Not enough exactly to be a real on-the-nose influence, but between some early interviews name checking Blood Meridian and stuff like (I Know You stranger mission spoiler) the Angel of Death (presumed) floating around there is a legitimate weird West undertone to the game. This game is so good, it's ridiculous. I've been killing myself to play it more, hell, even after a grueling training session I RAN rather than jogged home so that I could get to playing it faster. I've only just gotten to mexico and it's starting to dawn on me just how big the game really is. For some reason, the map doesn't really do it justice, and even if it's not that HUGE, they've managed to cram it with so much cool scenery I just don't care. One thing, though, is the computer REALLY terrible at playing poker, or does the game give you certain advantages (disregarding the cheating, of course), because I know for a fact that I am one of the worst poker players in the entire world, yet I still manage to win consistently when playing it in RDR. What gives?

What gives? The computer will often make some pretty loving stupid decisions, like betting/calling your bet with nothing but a king high or ace high, even after the river where they obviously aren't hoping to get another card. Some people say certain NPCs have "personalities," but I don't pay enough attention to notice. The liar's dice AI is pretty bad too, since they will literally never call spot-on, and often call you out on bids that are obviously not bluffs.

Looking for a few quick ideas on getting 100% if anyone's finished that. Right now I'm at 99.5% and havent found anything to move it in a while. I tried going back to do bounties, and got a few in Chuparosa before they started repeating/not giving anymore %. I went to Armadillo and Blackwater and got repeats as well. I have all the species, challenges, jobs, gambling, and outfits. Did I miss a place for bounties possibly? Should I keep doing repeat bounties hoping a new one or named one pops? All 3 locations kept giving the ??? bounties. Also, my horseshoes winnings were negative, could that possibly be it? Even though its only .5% left, I feel like I'm probably missing something big.

If the multiplayer had any replay value, I may have overlooked the single player, but it's also repetitive. Anyway, time to read the spoilers and see if the story is in any way interesting. I think one thing that ended up helping in my decision to sell it was the "I know you mission". People here seemed to think it was really something special but it wasn't any more interesting than any of the other stranger missions.

I think Mexico really burned me out, because on completing Mexico and going to Blackwater, I don't have any desire to finish the story. It's repetitive, buggy and I don't really care about how the story ends. It's a great concept and I really enjoyed the mechanics of the game, but the fun really wore off quickly. Mexico was nice for a change of scenery for me, but the story still moves at a snail's pace, and they blabber on forever. When not-Bill Hickock was lecturing me about Mexican politics every time we rode out for a mission I wanted to scream.

Well, while we're talking about westerns... One western I've only seen bits and pieces of, but which I liked what I saw of it, was Silverado. There's a lot of star power in that movie; Jeff Goldblum is a wily gambler man, among other thing! Only problem is, Silverado is really long, so I need to set up a special time to watch it... There's another that most of you guys probably haven't heard of. Hannie Caulder, starring Raquel Welch. A woman's family gets wiped out by three evil (and stupid) bandits, and she learns to be a gunfighter herself to take them down, being tutored by a surprisingly intellectual bounty hunter. It's actually pretty good. Bandit: I heard you got smart! Caulder: Funny. I haven't heard the same about you.

Heh, they seemed to realize this as the story goes on, as you start to encounter more missions where they don't talk during the ride and it just gives you the option to skip to your destination.

Bloody Hedgehog posted:Heh, they seemed to realize this as the story goes on, as you start to encounter more missions where they don't talk during the ride and it just gives you the option to skip to your destination. You can skip any and all of those conversations during the game, you don't have to listen to any of them. I've personally loved the chatter and have only skipped the rides where they don't talk anything. Also there seems to be quite a lot stuff they recorded, because during one West Dickens mission I somehow accidentally failed the mission right before the ride ended so that I had to replay it, and they actually had a completely different conversation from the first one! Neat. I also love the amount of minuscule little touches in this game. For example, has anyone else noticed that if your character is currently speaking (e.g. Marston during those aforementioned rides, your character in multiplayer while taunting), it's not possible to whistle for your horse? Of course it's only natural, but I wouldn't have thought they'd pay attention to something seriously unremarkable as that. Although they could've used that time for ironing out some bugs but oh well \/\/\/\/ They get better in my opinion, I don't recall being as disappointed with a Stranger mission in this game as with that one. a cyborg mug fucked around with this message at 13:06 on May 31, 2010 |

I'm very disappointed at how lifeless and cold the stranger missions structure is. I just finished the mission with the cannibal in the hills and there's NO pay-off. I hogtied the guy but I couldn't carry him to the sheriff. I cut loose the victim but I get no thanks from him and his wife is gone. I don't get to tell the families of the other victims the bad news. It's unstructured and unsatisfying. Why bother with the introductory scenes if you're going to treat the missions like any other random encounter, Rockstar? Mass Effect was a game that at least tried to give every single mission, small and big, both a beginning and an end.

Yeah, some of the stranger stuff is just left hanging. It was still early while I was figuring out the mechanics of everything when I cam across that church girl in the desert. When the mission ended I felt there should have been more I could do for her, so I hogtied her and took her back to town. Doing the right thing just got me a bounty on my head.
