Like on some of the longer 1hr + mixes up on here you can really feel the pulse of energy through the songs connecting them to one another, and the pace and energy of the music speeds up and slows down but never does so abruptly. With a mix this short, I gotta say things like that don't happen. It feels sorta more like a playlist of tunes you like rather than something made to be put on and left to wow for hours at a time. Like for example, I think your intro was really well done if long for less than 10 minutes of tunes, but the switch into the first chainsaw wobble was brutal. And if you want that yeah but it was totally unexpected. Same with the switch into the Mt. Eden track. I get the feeling if your library is deeper you could have attached these songs to one another much more smoothly.

It's abou the 3000 artists that all only released a few tracks each, which are amazing. There are some "big names" - people like tiesto, dubfire, armin, etc etc. If you post another mix like this you risk being ridiculed out of the thread. Go spend 10-20 hours on beatport finding new music, there is no easy way. Unless you want to be a bad top 10 chart dj (in which case iTunes can replace you and do it better) edit: no one can tell iTunes to look at 100 techno tracks and pick 20 that will sound and glow well together, but anyone can look at Joe McBlogger's top 40 chart and pick 10 of them. I'm not trying to be negative, but track picking is something that isn't easy and takes time. The first mix was more of an experiment with tracks I knew and already had - I didn't claim it was great or anything. Plus, there's not many clubs around here that are friendly to strictly house/electro house/dnb/whatever sets so I was figuring out a couple ways to mix in popular songs. Of course I love new music, but I'm also discovering the history of electronic music, so yes there will be some older classics. I'm doing these mixes to learn and get better, not to necessarily fill them with songs that no one's heard before. Anyway - this is my second one if you didn't see it. Sorry I missed that, trying to read and post using my phone. That tracklist is a step forward, to state bluntly you've moved from top 40 to top 100. Keep listening to new music, you'll get it eventually. I can't stress this enough: it will take time. Lots of time Generally if I look at a mix and I know every single song that is on it because they are really old (hey baby) or it's all songs you can catch in mainstream media, then there is no reason for me to download or listen. I guess my point is that if you're looking for advice on your tracklist, you're already headed in the general direction. If you're looking for technical critique come back in a week/month when you've made something you're proud of and we'll help you out. I'm going to be honest - I doubt anyone will download your mix because there have been 20 other goons in the past come in and do the same thing, get pissed when they were ridiculued, and then never post again. Literally 4-5 months ago a guy dropped like 5k on equipment, made a poo poo mix, got pissed and hasn't come back. I doubt he's even DJing anymore. There's some really good below the radar tracks in that second mix. I might not be an expert in electronic music, but jesus christ there some a lot of animosity in this thread for someone just learning the ropes. Anyway, I'm sorry for posting that first one, I guess. here is the thing (and I'm not aiming this just at you alman): It's perfectly ok and normal to go through a learning process. everybody does it, everybody has done it, etc etc etc. The thing is, though, don't you want to be known for exceptional output? Do you really want to have a run-of-the-mill piece of artwork (that anybody could have done) out there with your name on it? I went for about a year and a half of mixing before I would let anybody hear any of my stuff. I was mortified of people to hearing my learning process. Go ahead and practice, but no need to subject everybody else to it. Show us you GREAT stuff, not your 'meh, it's ok' stuff.

For me at least, I think it stems from the fact that established working DJs who know what they are doing and deserve to get paid have to compete for gigs and timeslots with people who don't know poo poo and are usually willing to play for free just to "get their name out there" It dilutes the value of the DJ and it sucks. Have you ever seen one of those rave flyers where there are a few headliners and then a shitload of locals that you've never heard of? No, but good DJ'ing is taking you audience further and deeper into the music then what they already know without making them "uncomfortable". Unless it's your game to stick to classics and top-40 songs, you'll have to dig deeper to create your musical signature as a DJ. Playing hit records may get you gigs on the short term, but it will not satisfy you in the long run. It will get you stuck in lovely bars, and you'll end up as a unrespected human jukebox, fighting of the drunk fratboys begging you to play "you know that song, where eh yeah lala" and girls trying to order beers at the DJ booth. Anyway my main question for everyone here is - I'm in the market for a new set of monitors. I have been struggling by on some admittedly great Logitech computer speakers for a while now, but they don't quite cut it at your average house party. What I need is a pair of speakers that sound pretty nice day-to-day, aren't too big, and won't distort when I turn them up enough to feed a 50-person house party. Oh, which are up to £200 for the pair. Anybody have any good experiences? (in return I'll put a mix up )

Raves are not the most common events anymore, the vast majority of DJ sets are gonna be heard in bars or other smaller venues that have very little connection to the oldskool rave scene. Not to say that people no longer throw massive raves, but I assume that they are going to be few and far between in Kansas. Even in Kansas, there has to be some overpriced bar somewhere with a resident crummy Electro house DJ. If you go out to a few parties you will probably get more inspiration for your mixes then you would just listening to music on your computer and posting in this thread. If worse comes to worse, just take a trip to a city with a decent scene and attend a few events. It may seem like a big expense for something like this but you won't regret it.

^^^ this is a good idea Whereabouts in Kansas are you? If you are on the western side, a roadtrip to Denver would be worthwhile. We get insane amounts of national and international talent year-round, and Beatport's club Beta is ranked 19th in the world (according to DJ Mag). Of course, I'm biased because I get to play there next weekend  There's also tons of great underground events with a dedicated group of people and a bunch of great local DJs and producers

One of them is playing a house/deep house set at a local bar here in Lawrence next week so I'm planning on checking that out. I've just never been exposed to the "scene" I guess - I've always been musically inclined, though (I play drums, guitar, and piano as well as write music), so most of the aspects of DJ'ing come pretty naturally to me - at least, the mixing part. Thanks for the tip on Kansas City Raver, MTM_F-. Like I said, the biggest issue is finding people to go to them with - I've been talking with my DJ friends quite a bit more the past few weeks so I'll probably end up going to whatever they know about. I'll send you an e-mail. Again, apologies to any DJs who have been posting mixes in other threads - didn't mean to derail the thread. edit: though actually, I have two cousins that live in Denver that I go visit usually once or twice a year and go skiing. Maybe next time I go up for a ski trip I'll hit you up for a good place to go that weekend.
